PART I.
A. Introduction
Who among you love to read stories? Can you retell and recall your
favorite story? Do you know what the theme of the story is? If not, let’s find
out.
B. Discussion
Retelling a story in one's own words (rather than reciting a text from
memory) provides oral fluency practice. Storytelling is a common human activity
which can be enjoyable, especially if, the material is interesting. The twist in this
activity is that the listener has to be attentive because they will shortly have to
retell the story that they are hearing.
Leslie and Caldwell (2001) and Caldwell and Leslie (2008) describe
guidelines for evaluating a retelling. Retellings should include:
Presence of the major character(s)
Defining characteristics of the characters
Problem presented in the story
Solution to that problem (or the end)
Events presented in sequential order
Ability to include only those events important to the story and exclude
unimportant events.
LETS TRY:
How to make a cup of tea?
First, boil some water
Next, serve the water in a cup
Then, put the teabag in the water
After, add some sugar and milk
Finally, add a biscuit and enjoy it
Now, it’s your turn to retell how to make a cup of tea. Good job kid!
There are several ways a reader can piece together the story's theme. The
reader can ask himself or herself these questions:
Do the characters learn anything throughout the story?
Do the characters change at all?
Do the characters have any belief about life or people in general?
Why do the characters act the way they do?
If your mother started putting on her galoshes and raincoat, what could
you infer the weather is like? You could infer that it is either raining or it will
rain soon. No one needed to tell you the weather forecast. You can infer that
by putting the information together.
There are several themes that typically show up in stories. These include:
Courage
Perseverance
Family
Friendship
Growing up
Acceptance
Loyalty
Transformation
Compassion
Honesty
Cooperation
Example: Read "The Hare and the Tortoise" by Aesop. The last line explicitly
states the theme:
The Hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have
never yet been beaten," said he, "when I put forth my full speed. I challenge any
one here to race with me."
The tortoise said quietly, "I accept your challenge."
"That is a good joke," said the Hare. "I could dance round you all the way."
"Keep your boasting till you've beaten," answered the Tortoise. "Shall we race?"
So, a course was fixed and a start was made. The Hare darted almost out of
sight at once, but soon stopped and to show his contempt for the Tortoise, he laid
down to have a nap. The Tortoise plodded on and plodded on, and when the Hare
awoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post and could not
run up in time to save the race. Then said the Tortoise: "Plodding wins the race."
Practice:

a. Don't try to do something if you are too scared.
b. If you are too afraid to try something, you don't know what you
are missing.
c. Slow and steady wins the race.
2. Which of the following details from the story best supports the theme?
