All of the Examination Syndicate’s English language proficiency examinations are now aligned with the levels
described by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). SPM writing assessment criteria (and
tasks) have been developed in accordance with the CEFR descriptors and the features of performance which
they ascribe to different proficiency levels.
Guidance for writing examiners
• In every instance, the primary consideration is: which descriptor best describes the composition being
evaluated. If you are unsure about other considerations (e.g. this seems to be covered under both sub-scale
x and y; I may be penalising the candidate more than once; but what about feature x?; would this candidate
pass or not; why is no one getting a 5), go back to asking this fundamental question.
▪ Positive phrasing of descriptors does not mean that a performance at that level has no weaknesses.
By comparing a descriptor to those adjacent to it, above and below, it should be evident what level of
ability and weakness is being described. For descriptors 1 and 5 in a particular level’s scale, the adjacent
lower and higher descriptor may be found in the overall scale.
▪ Candidates may achieve high marks on one criterion but low marks on another criterion; they should
be marked accordingly. For example, a composition may cover and develop all content elements, but
use the wrong genre and register. In that case, it may get a 5 for Content and a 1 for Communicative
Achievement.
▪ When achievement of descriptors vary, (e.g. stronger vocabulary coupled with weaker grammar,
content elements covered but not appropriately developed), or not all parts of the descriptor achieved, the
adjacent score point may be the most appropriate.
▪ Score points 2 and 4: There are two ways for compositions to receive the undefined levels (2 and 4):
(1) a performance that reflects part of the higher descriptor and part of the lower descriptor, and (2) a
performance is clearly better than the lower descriptor and also clearly worse than the higher descriptor.
▪ Base evaluations on the totality of the writing presented. For example, do not overly focus on any
one particular instance of a spelling error, and do not let that one particular instance over-influence the
candidate’s mark for Language.
▪ When in doubt about some aspect of a performance, look for evidence elsewhere in the performance that
might remove the ambiguity. For example, to determine if a vocabulary or grammatical mistake is a slip
or a systematic error, look for other instances of the word or structure.
▪ Overlength/underlength scripts: Length is not a criterion in the mark scheme. Scripts should be read in
full and marked as presented. A response that is longer/shorter than the guideline number of words may
be entirely appropriate, and its score should not be affected. On the other hand, an over-length script may
result in irrelevance (assessed under Content) or have an adverse effect on the target reader (assessed
under Communicative Achievement) and should be marked down as appropriate in those sub-scales.
Similarly, an under-length script may not exhibit an adequate range of language, may not communicate
effectively and/or provide adequate information, which would affect its score in the relevant sub-scales.
▪ Lifting from the input beyond key words and phrases: Candidates should not be given credit for parts of
their response that have been lifted from the input. Lifted output may however provide negative evidence
about candidates’ abilities and should be considered and evaluated accordingly.
▪ Varieties of English: Candidates are expected to use a particular variety of English with some degree of
consistency in areas such as spelling, and not for example switch from using a British spelling of a word
to an American spelling of the same word in the same written response to a given task.
▪ Spelling is considered under the Language criterion.
▪ Punctuation is one factor among others under the Organisation criterion.
▪ “Generally” is a downshifting qualifier meaning ‘not in every way/instance’. Thus, ‘generally
appropriately’ is not as good as ‘appropriately’.

Hi Diana,
Thanks for asking me. I simply cannot believe that Mum is turning 44! I think a new handbag is a good idea as she
only has one other handbag that Dad had bought ages ago. Besides, that handbag looks the worse for wear. I cannot
bear to see Mum carrying it any longer! She deserves something elegant and functional at the same time. The trip
to Langkawi is a great idea as well. However, Mum would insist on a family outing to the island as opposed to her
spending some time away from her responsibilities. That is the reason I would prefer we get her a handbag. As you
said, the sale is on. As such, we are bound to get a good bargain. I will be coming home this weekend so, we could
head to town to get it if you are agreeable with my suggestion.
Let me know. Bye.
Part 2
I would like to suggest having our year-end class trip on Pulau Redang. Why? Simply because there is a lot to
do there! First of all, the beaches there have crystal clear waters meaning that you can see what’s beneath the waves.
It would be the best place to be and have a holiday for our class.
We can spend four days three nights there in the hotel that is very affordable. It would be cheaper if we were to
book it this month. Booking.com and Agoda are giving very attractive discounts. It would cost RM100 per person
for a night. This covers three meals per day as well as activities arranged by the hotel. It comes to RM300 per person.
Transportation is another RM100 per person which includes the bus rental and the boat ride to the island. So the total
would be RM400.
A holiday there would mean we can enjoy the beautiful beach, the crystal clear waters and have a whale of a time
snorkeling. We can quite literally swim with the fishes. The underwater scenery is also mesmerising and bewitching
due to the coral reefs and a multitude of sea dwellers such as giant clams, sea urchins and tonnes of different fishes.
Furthermore, the hotel can also arrange for us to have a seaside bbq one of the nights so that would be great fun.
We could have a campfire too. In addition to swimming and snorkelling, we can also play beach volleyball and go
island hopping, which can be arranged by the hotel, but at an additional cost of course.
I think these reasons are enough to justify my location of choice. Let’s make it happen for our class. We
deserve it.

Review of the film ‘Schindler’s List’
Steven Spielberg took to the screen to tell a tragic yet very real series of events that had gone untold since the

movie that tells a story respectfully, but in all brutal honesty.
The film depicts so many different messages to the audience, but the reality that one man can make a difference
Question 5
The Most Important Day of My Life
The most important day of my life had just happened recently. It all started out when some friends and I were
bored. We wanted to do something that was fun and cool which also happened to be very bad. We decided we were
going to make a big firecracker.
The first thing we did was to go to a hardware store. We went there and looked around for a long time, till we
decided what we wanted to use in the firecracker. I watched a TV show the night before about bombs on PBS (Public
Broadcast System). So when I told my friends what I watched we decided to make a pipe-bomb. We bought the pipe
and went back to my house.
Once we got back to my house we started assembling the bomb. I remember watching how to make it off PBS.
So we first drilled a hole on one end of the cap so that the fuse could fit through it. Then we began to fill the pipe with
black powder. Once it got half full we stuck the fuse in, and began to fill it up with more black powder. Once it was
almost full we stopped, and we filled the rest up with hot glue. We did not know if the glue would ignite it or not
so we tested it out on a small sample of black powder. The glue did not ignite the black powder, so we filled up the

Hi Mustapha,
I’m really glad your parents have allowed us to spend the weekend together especially to celebrate Merdeka.
On Friday, I’ll be throwing you a barbeque party at my home! Without a doubt, we’ll be heading to Dataran
Merdeka to observe the National Day Parade on Saturday. Dad has volunteered to drive us there. After that,
we can head to Central Market to do some shopping, if you like. Come Sunday, Mum is taking us out to
sample Japanese food at her favourite restaurant in Mont Kiara. Sounds good?
Call me just before you arrive at the train station. We’ll come to pick you up.

Question 2
How to Study Effectively for Examinations
One of the best ways to prepare for examinations is to come up with and draw a personal study timetable that
suits your individual need. Equal amount of time must be allocated for each subject so that thorough revision
can be done. Importantly, problematic subjects must be given due attention. Additionally, we should refrain
from engaging in time-consuming activities like socialising with friends and being on social media.
Of course, one of the main benefits of making early preparations is it boosts our confidence during the
examination. When we are confident, we can reach new heights of academic success. Taking examinations
can be stressful. We may be anxious and worried about what questions will be asked and how we will fare. By
preparing for the examination early, we will feel better about our capabilities. It helps to take the edge off of our
fear knowing we have done our best in preparing well.
Apart from having a personal timetable that suits our needs and is practical enough for us to follow, we
need to have determination and the will to succeed. These attributes can and will assure us of success because
we will have the right mindset to start with.
Question 5
Crime Does Not Pay
Danny was the only son of hawkers. Although their income was small, his parents were happy and did
everything to please him. As a spoilt teenager, Danny did whatever he wished. He started making friends with
shady characters and became interested only in having a good time, freely spending his parents’ hard-earned
money. So, he dropped out of school. Believing that he could do better than his parents who worked hard yet
earned little, he dreamt of getting rich without sweat and toil.
Soon, he was on the wrong side of the law. He became a conman but after a while, people were no longer fooled.
Desperate, Danny became a pickpocket and, later, turned to extortion. Danny’s mother once advised him to turn over
a new leaf. However, he was still convinced that he could make a fortune without hard work. Danny thought his
chance had finally come when his friend told him of a scheme that would make them rich till the end of their lives.
It all seemed well-planned when the mastermind explained it to Danny. They would rob a bank and escape
in a stolen lorry, abandon it outside town and continue their journey in a stolen car, which they would get rid of
in a disused mining pool before crossing the border. Then they would live as rich men.
It was not meant to be. Before they could grab enough money, one of the bank tellers had managed to push
a hidden alarm button. As police came screeching around the corner, Danny and his friends barely managed
to flee in the lorry, but not before a security guard ripped off Danny’s mask in a tussle. Danny quickly turned
his face away but turned it to full focus of the security camera. The getaway driver, in panic, made a left turn
instead of a right and took an unfamiliar road. They reached a tunnel for which the lorry was too high and had
no choice but to jump off and try to escape on foot.
In his bare and gloomy jail cell, Danny finally admitted to himself that ‘crime does not pay’.

Hi Ahmad,
I’m really thrilled to hear that Saddiq has been accepted! I do think a farewell gift is necessary for him
although I’m not sure if a laptop or a mobile phone is at the top of the list as a gift. I am thinking of a more
practical gift – a good quality winter jacket. He will need one as he’d be spending four winters in England.
There are many sales on now and we could get one within RM600. Besides, Lyla and Sabina are chipping in
making the purchase doable, don’t you think? That’s my suggestion.

Question 2
The Product I Would Sell Online
Selling products online is one of the ways to venture into business for teenagers. I would choose to sell nail
polish as men and women both love using it to do up their nails, and it’s definitely one of the best products to
sell. There’s an increase in demand as people have been spending more time at home over the past year as a
result of Covid-19. Furthermore, nail salons are not open for business and as such, this product is in demand for
those who like to keep their nails looking pretty.
Online marketplaces are arguably one of the best experiences for businesses looking to reach a wider
audience. It also means standing out is crucial in racking in visitors to my listing. So how do I gain an edge
over others? I will use their marketing and advertising tools. Advertising tools are a guaranteed way to get more
exposure than you normally would organically. For new sellers like me, this might be my best option in building
brand awareness within the marketplace.
Next, I need to optimise my product listing. When it comes to perfecting one’s product listing, there are
plenty of things to consider – product titles, images, videos, descriptions, keywords and categories. I will ensure
that the title of my product as a keyword takes precedence over keywords in the description because product
titles act as keywords during web search.
I should not leave my potential buyers hanging by asking them to contact me for further information.
Hence, I will ensure that all the descriptions contain all the information that they need to make a purchase
without having to speak to someone because it cuts down on lead time and leaves them a fuss-free experience
which many online consumers value.
It is said that 73% of consumers who watch product videos are likely to make a purchase. Videos are
an excellent way to build trust in my product. Product videos provide buyers with quality information that
static images cannot. So I will make sure that my advertising will also include videos that are informative and
interesting.

Question 3
How Teenagers Can Take Care of the Disabled
Someone once said, “Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.”
Disabled people are usually strong, courageous and wonderful people. We must not forget that some of the most
successful people the world has ever seen were physically disabled. People such as Helen Keller and Stephen
Hawking were disabled.
Usually, people do not have a supportive and encouraging attitude towards the disabled. They make
the disabled feel as if they are helpless and incapable of doing anything worthwhile and substantive in life.
Teenagers can start to reverse these attitudinal problems by lending a hand in disabled homes to care for these
strong souls. In addition, teenagers can start by treating the disabled with respect and care.
Teenagers can also do their bit by contributing their energy towards adopting a child or an adult in homes
to be their buddies. In these ways, teenagers can eradicate the negative perception and act as the binding agent
between the disabled and the society at large.
We must treat disabled people respectfully considering them as able and capable as normal people. We
must not let them feel as if they are being pitied or discriminated against. Treating them on par with other normal
people will be the best gift we can offer them.
We must encourage and support them in their endeavours to be successful. All they need and require from
us is emotional support and respect. Their struggles, challenges, obstacles – they are capable of handling. We,
as teenagers, must do our part to make this world safer and more embracing.

Subject: Get Moving!
Hi Colin,
It’s good to hear from you. It is most unfortunate that you are experiencing this weight issue. However, you
are not the only one going through this. Many of my classmates are also dealing with this weighty issue.
Primarily, I would advise you to start moving on a daily basis! Start exercising. I think that walking is the
best exercise if you can’t afford the time. Walk around your room 10 times and then increase the rounds.
Listening to your favourite songs while walking will help. Start today! After this you can increase to other
more rigorous activities you can find online.
Hope it helps. Bye for now!

Question 2
The Littering Problem
Littering means the throwing of waste materials irresponsibly. It is an environmental issue and should be
given serious attention. This irrational and undisciplined attitude is not stopping despite serious warnings.
Litterbugs dirty the environment and are selfish because they are not concerned about that their action does to
their surroundings.
When plastics, rusted iron nails and plastics are dumped, they have harsh effects on the environment.
They are mostly non-biodegradable. Hence, they are difficult to decompose. Moreover, they also pollute the
environment leaching toxic wastes into the air, water and soil. Other domestic wastes add to landfills adding to
global warming. Many animals, particularly aquatic creatures, consume the plastic rubbish that we throw away
and die due to suffocation or because they get trapped in or around them.
Question 3
E-Books: Boon or Bane?
E-books are becoming more and more popular but there are always two sides to a coin. An e-book is a book in
electronic format. It is downloaded to a computer, phone or an e-reader, and is read on screen. An e-book has
numbered pages, table of contents, pictures and graphics, exactly like a printed book. It is easy to purchase and
download e-books from the Internet. It is exactly like purchasing any other product. The only difference is that
after payment you will either be directed to a download page or receive the download link in an email. All you
have to do is click on the link and the e-book will automatically download to your computer, to a folder of your
choice.
One of its advantages is the low update cost. When the author needs to update certain parts of the e-book,
he or she simply edits the electronic document, saves the updated version, and then informs customers about the
new release. In the case of a printed book, the publisher will probably have to make a minimum production run
of 1,000 copies. This takes time and money.
Additionally, e-books are searchable. Some ebooks have a Search function, which allows you to quickly
jump to the page containing the word you’re interested in. On top of that, when you buy e-books, there is no
shipping cost and you get your book immediately.
Conversely, one of its disadvantages is it is not as convenient to read. Who wants to sit in front of a
computer or screen for hours just reading your e-book, right? It can cause muscle strain and neckache not to
mention affecting one’s eyesight from prolonged screen exposure.
Moreover, there is the issue with piracy. In the printed book world, people who want to ‘share’ your book
will photocopy it, and then send it to their friends. With e-books, your file can be easily emailed to anyone. It
can even be placed in a public server for anyone to download.
However, with concern about the environment and depleting natural resources, e-books might be a better
option as it not only saves trees, it also saves us space.
Question 5
An Act of Kindness
While on holiday in Istanbul I suddenly fell ill. We were at an ancient teahouse that we had to try, because this
place was 200 years old. While we were there, I got an upset stomach and I wanted to throw up. I was pale and
started shivering, so that was my cue to go back to our hotel. But the problem was, there were no cabs and I
wasn’t in any state to walk.
We saw a small boutique hotel nearby and asked if they could help us with a taxi. But, obviously a hotel
would charge us extra to get to our destination. Meanwhile, while I was struggling to walk and hunt for cabs,
this man came by and asked us where we wanted to go.
I told him we needed to get to Taksim, where our hotel was, and by surprise he was a taxi driver. His cab
was parked a walk away, so he had me wait while he grabbed his cab so I didn’t have to walk.
He didn’t try to charge us extra or take advantage of our situation. He took us back safely to our hotel by
the regular taxi meter. Not only did he save me from an extremely uncomfortable night, he even suggested some
teas I could drink that could make me feel better.
This act of kindness from a sweet old man made me feel like this world isn’t such a bad place after all.

Hi Fifa,
It’s nice to hear from you. For starters, I think you should use the school hall to hold the farewell party as it

Part 2
Recycling
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials or objects. The process of recycling
has become more important with the growing problems of environmental pollution and growing landfills.
A lot of things that we use can be recycled. Paper, plastic and metal are the most common items that are
recycled. As teenagers, when we buy things, we can opt for those that can easily be recycled. Also, we can try to
use merchandise made up of recycled products. In addition, we should learn to sort waste properly.
We need recycling for many reasons. Most importantly, it will help us to save our planet. Besides, recycling
saves the earth by facilitating the reprocess of paper which will save millions of trees. Also, recycling saves a
lot of energy and resources.
Moreover, recycling reduces the burden on the environment. As we save energy the amount of greenhouse
gases released is reduced. In addition, recycling reduces the amount of waste that takes years to decompose.
Also, the recycled material can be sold. So, ultimately recycling saves money.
Teenagers can be encouraged to recycle if they start young. Furthermore, recycling should be made
convenient for teenagers to practice so that they would not be put off. Schools should make it common practice
to that students are used to it. To sum up, recycling is a small but effective step we can all make to save the
environment.
Question 3
Animal Cruelty
Animal cruelty is when people abuse animals physically. It is certainly a cruel and despicable act because the
animals are helpless and unable to protect themselves. Pets are also usually completely loyal to their owners and
therefore will suffer any abuse quietly.
One of the reasons people commit animal cruelty is due to just sheer evil. They know that they have power
over their animals and choose to abuse them with no care or thought about the animal’s welfare. Some of these
people get a thrill out of seeing animals suffer and therefore they commit these cruel acts.
Some people may also abuse their animals thinking that they are disciplining them or because they think
the animals will be more obedient. There are also those who are guilty due to perhaps some mental issues.
To prevent this from happening, there should be stricter punishments against those found guilty. Usually
there perpetrators are just fined. If there is a harsher punishment such as compulsory jail term, maybe it will
deter people from behaving this way. People also should be incentivised to report cases of animal cruelty with
the option of remaining anonymous. Some other ways it to make sure those who have been found guilty never
have the opportunity to own pets. For this to happen, there should be a record of any past convictions so that
people can easily check up on their background.
