Introduction
There are signs that teenage pregnancies are on the rise in several countries due to lockdowns
imposed during the pandemic. International aids organizations say there is cause for concern and
warning of the long-term consequences early pregnancies have on young girls. According to
UNICEF, difficulties during pregnancy and childbirth are among the leading causes of death
among young women between the age 15 and 19.
Many vital drop-in centers for adolescents and young adults who require urgent help, as well as
schools, have also been forced to close due to the pandemic. According to the media girls are
much more vulnerable to sexual abuse without much safety structures, which help to educate
them about sexual and reproductive health.

Reflection#1
My first piece of artifact is an article called the Adjoas story which I source from the internet it
was written by adjoa it was published on the 20th of September 2019. This article was written by
a fourteen-year-old teenage mom who tell her story on how she got pregnant. When I was
reading this article, my knowledge began to increase about the different reasons why there are so
many teenage pregnancies in society today,
My second piece is a poem which I source from the internet and it’s written by Rebekah S and
published July 2011. This artifact is about a teenage mom who was alone and in a dark place of
her life. This artifact have me thinking so deep because a lot of times when young girl got
pregnant, families and friends turn their backs on them and they become depressed and distance.
My third piece is a song which I took from the internet and this song was written by Vbyz
Kartel and Vanessa Bling and published on September 23 2009. This song is about teenage
pregnancy. This song is very clear on what the writers is saying, they express the sadness of
being pregnant so young and not able to help themselves and the fear of telling their parents.
Reflection#2
The use of language used in the artifact.
In the artifact, “The Adjoas story” the language was informal. The diction was at a level I could
easily comprehend. The writer also used emotive language to bring out the feelings of the readers
so they may become sympathetic. It is also opinionated to ensure that reader got a full
understanding that there is a lot of different circumstances that causes teenage pregnancy.
In the poem, “All Alone for Now” the language was formal. The writer was very sympathetic
and concern of the well being of the teenage mom. The writer also used emotive language to
bring out the feelings of the readers, it allows the reader to empathize on the situation.
In the song, “Teenage Pregnancy” the used of language was informal. The song writers also use
emotive language to help bring the message across. And also, the listener could react to a
rhythm as the song progressed.

Reflection#3
How does the SBA help me to become a better person?
As a student doing English, my research is very important and it increased my critical thinking. It
let me think more quickly about different reason that can contribute to teenage pregnancy during
the pandemic. It also widened my vocabulary to know the meaning of some of the words in my
SBA and it also strengthened my English skill to know how to manage my words and increase
my writing skills to write faster and properly.
Through the execution of this SBA, I was able to increase my knowledge on the topic “Did the
lockdown during pandemic contribute to an increase in teenage pregnancy”. My research also
educated me on the different use of language and techniques use in an article and poem. This
SBA also strengthened my research, reasoning, and comprehension skills. I am now more adept
in speaking and writing English.

Writing Report
This portfolio was completed by our group of the same curiosities. We
wanted to gain better
understanding on our chosen topic "Teenage Pregnancy" so we created
our own subtopics .
How do media and dancehall music affect young people's decisions
about sex?
How Did the lockdown during pandemic contribute to an increase in
teenage Pregnancy?What
are the effects of teenage pregnancy on teen girls academically? These
questions were
answered and we collected 3 artifacts that were of meaning to our
questions. As 5 members of
our group we brought 1 out of our 3 artifacts to our group and selected
only three artifacts that
answered our group questions.
In researching these pieces we can now say that dancehall music has a
great influence on
teenagers which leads to our main topic "Teenage Pregnancy",Dancehall
music appeals to the
listener's emotions and the way a person thinks it is so powerful
teenagers will want to
experience it. The pandemic in 2019 has also had an impact on people
like financial issues in
families that can lead to teen girls to seek for money anywhere and from
anyone some teengirls
go to older men for cash which is a risk leading to pregnancy. We also
found out that Teenage
Pregnancy affects teenagers academically, pregnant teen girls in school
finds it hard to
concentrate and feeling sickly and so their performance will start to be
deplete; until it's time to
deliver the newborn, that teen will afto leave school at an early age
without being fully educated
for an occupation.
We didn’t learn as a group,we learned individually.Even though we
focus on “Teenage
Pregnancy”,our subtopics have caused the group member to focus
mainly on their subtopic.We
learnt that teenage pregnancy is cause by peer pressure, lack of adult
subversion,media
influence and early engagement of sexual activity

Adjoa's story - The violent truth about teenage pregnancy Three years ago, when she was 14,
Adjoa started selling things by the roadside to help her mum out at home. There she met a 35-
year-old man who offered to take care of her and help her with school supplies. Adjoa ended up
pregnant.
People will say all kinds of things about us – about teenage mothers. They’ll say we’re lazy, or
not interested in school, or foolish. But we’re not. We’re hardworking, and industrious, and
sensible, and just looking for a way to support ourselves.
What happened to me was all about financial problems. I needed money. My school didn’t
charge fees, but there were books they would ask you to buy that were compulsory. I’ve always
been very good in school. I even passed my elder sister in the school year. But things were very
difficult.

My father died in 2011, so my mum, she has been struggling for a while. It worried me when I
asked for money and she said she doesn’t have any. She was suffering to get the money.
So I thought, maybe I can also find a way to get the money I need. I met a man through selling
snacks on the side of the road. But it wasn’t right.
I didn’t know I was pregnant. My mum took me to the hospital and we took the pregnancy test,
and everything was positive. I showed the man who got me pregnant, and he was helping with
the costs, but my mum was doing a police case and he was afraid and went away. Now he
doesn’t come home. When we call him, he doesn’t pick up the calls. And so we’ve forgotten
about him.
I’m not a shy type; I don’t care what people say. I started back at school barely three months
after giving birth. I even sometimes bring my friends to the house when I’m
coming to breastfeed the baby during break. But it has really changed my plans. By now, I would
have been at Senior High School (SHS) otherwise.
I’m very happy to be back at school; I think I’m the only one in this village who has given birth
8
and gone back to school. I’m thinking of becoming a doctor. But what I want now after SHS is to
work even harder, so my son can go to a world class school, and he can learn, and be even better
than me in the future.
He just turned two in July. His name is Isaac. Sometimes, he picks up a hammer, and hits every
nail that he sees, or he takes a pen, and uses it as a microphone, the way pastors do, so I’m
thinking he will become a great furniture maker or a man of God one day.
Adjoa and her mum eat dinner while Isaac looks at the camera
I would like to say – girls shouldn’t follow a man, especially girls’ underage. They will tell you
all sorts of sugar-coated words, but after having an affair with you, they just see you as trash or
something.
We should focus only on our education. When the situation comes, you can’t reverse it again.
Giving birth isn’t easy. Sometimes, I see the other girls in the village who are following men,
and I call them to advise them. Because I know the consequences.
An education is the key to success. If you are not educated, it is very hard for you to prosper.
Other girls who have had babies need to come back to school, and just ignore anyone who says
something, and put their focus on their education. Parents should support them, and teachers
shouldn’t ignore them.
My mum takes care of the baby, and she sent me back to school because she knows I can make it
in the future. We still don’t have money, but my mum and I both sell. And my son, he’s very
funny. He’s a gift.
Between 2016-2019, children in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa researched the causes and
effects of teenage pregnancy in their communities. Children shared stories of rape on the way to
market, abuse by schoolteachers, and large numbers of girls forced into transactional
relationships due to extreme poverty and the high cost of schooling. For more, please visit the
interactive report, here.
