UNIT 6: TRENDS AND FUTURE DIRECTION OF PHARMACY INFORMATICS

Information retrieval in Pharmacy

Information retrieval is the tracing and recovery of stored information. It can exist in many forms from the
archives of a drug company to the worldwide web. Effective information retrieval requires an understanding of the range
of relevant information available, where it exists and how it might be sourced

What is Drug Information Storage and Retrieval?

The storage, retrieval, and dissemination of information constitutes a major function of any drug information
service (DIS). Systematic process of collecting and cataloging data so that they can be located and displayed on request.
Computers and data processing techniques have made possible to access the high-speed and large amounts of
information.

Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR)

An adverse drug reaction (ADR) can be defined as an appreciably harmful or unpleasant reaction resulting from
an intervention related to the use of a medicinal product

Suspected reactions to medicines that are unlicensed or being used off-label in addition to the authorised use of
a medicinal product in normal doses

CLASSIFICATION OF ADVERSE DRUG REACTION

TYPE A REACTIONS- sometimes referred to as augmented reactions – which are ‘dosedependent’ and predictable on the
basis of the pharmacology of the drug

TYPE B REACTIONS- bizarre reactions – which are idiosyncratic and not predictable on the basis of the pharmacology

Benefits of IT in Healthcare

• ability to store and retrieve data;

• the ability to rapidly communicate patient information in a legible format;

• improved medication safety through increased legibility, which potentially decreases the risk of medication
errors;

• and the ease of retrieval of drug information

A few examples of the applications of IT in health-related information:

• Computerized disease registries

• Consumer health IT applications
• Electronic prescribing
• Electronic medical record systems such as EMRs, EHRs, and PHRs
• Telehealth

COMPUTER IN PHARMACY

Uses:

• the information of drug data, records and files

• drug management (creating, modifying, adding and deleting data in patient files to generate reports), business
details. Barcodes
• locating the items by various means
• useful for the patient profile monitoring
• drug interactions, medication,
• database management,
• material management,
• drug information services,
• patient counseling,
• billing & purchasing.

Applications of Computers in Pharmacy

• Usage of computers in the retail pharmacy

• Computer aided design of drugs (CADD)
• Use of Computers in Hospital Pharmacy
• Data storage and retrieval
• Information system in Pharmaceutical Industry
• Diagnostic laboratories
• Computer aided learning

Data Retrieval Websites

Drug Bank-This website contains information such as; medication interactiond, chemical structures, pharmaclogy,
metabolism and other topics.

PubMed- a free search engine supporting research and retrieval of biomedical literature with the goal of improving
health care system.

DailyMed- operated by the U.S National library of Medicine which contains labeling for products such as medical gases,
devices, medical foods, and etc.

CenterWatch - a website that is recognized globally for providing clinical trials information to health care professionals.

Everyday Health - A company which owns a websites that produces contents correlates to health, lifestyle, and wellness

MOBILE

Mobile Technology provides opportunities for pharmacists and other health care providers to help improve and
assess patient’s medication adherence.

Mobile Health (mHealth)

Mobile health (mHealth) uses mobile technologies to assist healthcare professionals in providing efficient and
adequate patient care

The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the Global Observatory for eHealth, has defined
mHealth as “medical and public health practice supported by mobile devices, such as mobile phones, patient monitoring
devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other wireless devices”

Mobile Health Apps

• Medicine for Health

• Medicine Search
• babyl health
• SwipeRx

The Benefits of Mobile Health Technology

• Personalizing health data and treatment programs for each patient

• Decreasing hospital costs by cutting down on paper usage and waste
• Helping patients access essential health information quickly, which can minimize extra costs such as for
unnecessary hospital visit

OTHER DEVICES

Wearable devices

Wearable technology, wearables, fashion technology, smartwear, tech togs, skin electronics or fashion
electronics are smart electronic devices that are worn close to and/or on the surface of the skin

Telehealth

Telehealth is the distribution of health-related services and information via electronic information and
telecommunication technologies. It allows long-distance patient and clinician contact, care, advice, reminders, education,
intervention, monitoring, and remote admissions

Telehealth connects patients to vital health care services through videoconferencing, remote monitoring,
electronic consults and wireless communications. By increasing access to physicians and specialists, telehealth helps
ensure patients receive the right care, at the right place, at the right time

Health information technology

Health information technology refers to the usage of computers and telecommunications and other systems to
store, retrieve and share information, HIT refers to the secure use of technology to manage health-related information

The most common examples of healthcare information technology are e-prescriptions, electronic health records
(EHRs), and other tech tools that help patients meet health goals such as managing blood sugar levels or quitting
smoking. Information technology has paved the way for more accurate EHRs/ EMRs that help patients gain quick and
easy access to various healthcare facilities

Additionally, it has given patients more control over their health through various mobile apps and information
platforms. Healthcare information technology’s primary purpose is to maintain privacy while improving patient care

OTHER TRENDS IN PHARMACY INFORMATICS

Robotic Process Automation

Robotic process automation (RPA) is a software-based automation service that uses AI, relying on robots or
software for performing daily tasks and certain business processes with higher accuracy and speed. The result is higher
efficiency, performance, reduced cost, and advanced data analytics

Pharmacists can harness the power this technology to address compliance and regulatory requirements by
reducing human errors, meet patient expectation with high-quality medicines and compliance, and reduce production
and compliance costs

Telemedicine

“Tele” is a Greek word meaning “distance “and “mederi” is a Latin word meaning “to heal” . Telemedicine is the
use of electronic information to communicate technologies to provide and support healthcare when distance separates
the participants.

Telemedicine can improve adherence and track patient health data, especially those with chronic diseases or
specific conditions, using wearable gadgets and portable medical devices

These services can easily be performed remotely through a telemedicine platform. Through e-consultations, pharmacists
are remotely connected with patients and a network of healthcare professionals to provide medication management
services ensuring the safe use of medicines via patient counselling
