SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

A. Definition

Simple future tense is a verb tense used to talk about something that will happen or will be true
in the future. Simple future tenses are tenses to explain an event that has not yet begun and will
occur in the future. Sentences on simple future tense can be characterized by the use of the words
will, shall, and going to. Simple future tense is also used to express a prediction or desire.

B. Formula of Simple Present Tense:

Subject +will/Shall+V1+Object

(+) Subject + to be (am/is/are) going to + V1

Subject + Will/Shall + not + V1+ Object

(-) Subject + to be + (am/is/are) + not + going to + V1

Will/Shall + Subject + V1 + Object

(?) To be (Am/is/are) + Subject + Going to + V1

Notes:

Will not => won’t

Shall not => shan’t


Example:

1. I will be a teacher (Saya akan menjadi seorang guru)


2. He will not join our sport club (Dia tidak mau bergabung dengan klub olahraga kami)
3. I am going to paint my bedroom tomorrow (Saya akan mengecat kamar saya esok hari)
4. She is not going to read that book tomorrow (Dia tidak akan membaca buku itu besok)
5. We shall not stay here (Kita tidak akan tinggal disini)
6. Shall we go to Lombok next week? (Akankah kita pergi ke Lombok minggu depan?)

C. Adverb of Time of simple future tense

The following is a time description commonly used in simple future tense:

- Tomorrow: besok
- Later: nanti
- Next week: minggu depan
- Next month: bulan depan
- Next year: tahun depan
- Soon: segera
- Tonight: malam ini
- By and by: Sebentar lagi
- The day after tomorrow: Lusa

D. Use of Simple Future Tense:


1. Declare an event that will happen in the future.

 I will take school examination next week (Saya akan mengikuti ujian sekolah pekan
depan)

 Danny will be 17 years old next month (Danny akan berusia 17 tahun bulan depan)
 We will arrive at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 09.00 a.m (Kita akan tiba di
Bandara Internasional Soekarno-Hatta pukul 09.00 pagi)

2. Stating what has been decided to do.

 I am going to gym on Friday (Saya akan ke gym pada hari Jumat)

 She is going to attend the party (Dia akan menghadiri pesta)

 They will visit their friends in Solo (Mereka akan mengunjungi teman mereka di Solo)

3. Declare an offer/request/solicitation to another person


 Will you help me to bring this bag? (Maukah kamu membantuku membawa tas ini?)

 Will you come in, please! (Silakan masuk!)

 Will you come to my house tomorrow morning? (Maukah kamu datang ke rumah saya
besok pagi?)

4. Declared the decision to do something without a plan.


 Nanda: This letter is in French, and I don’t speak a word in French. Can you help me?
(Surat ini tertulis dalam Bahasa Prancis, dan saya tidak bisa berbahasa Prancis. Bisakah
kamu membantu?
Lois: Sure, I will translate it for you. (Tentu, saya akan menerjemahkannya untukmu)

 Wait a minute, I will bring you a medicine (Tunggu Sebentar, saya akan membawakanmu
obat)

5. Express an emotion or feeling.

 He will be angry (Dia akan marah)

 My mom will love her new car (Ibuku akan menyukai mobil barunya)

 Ana will be sad if you say that (Ana akan merasa sedih jika kamu berkata seperti itu)
E. The Differences between Will, Shall and Going to
Broadly, the words will, shall, and going to have the same meaning, which means "will".
However, in some circumstances the word can also differ in meaning based on context.
a. Will/Shall
- Will used to subject I, You, We, They, He, She and It
- Shall be used for subject I, We
- Expressing a desire and insanity (a definite possibility)
- State a common fact or truth
- Declare a promise or offer yourself spontaneously

Example:
I will come to your birthday party tonight (Saya akan pergi ke pesta ulang tahunmu
malam ini)

He will not buy a pencil tomorrow (Dia tidak akan membeli pensil besok)

I shall study tonight (Saya akan (harus) belajar malam ini)

You look so tired, shall I call the doctor? (Kamu terlihat lelah, perlukan saya

menelpon dokter?)

Family will always be here whenever you need them (Keluarga akan selalu

ada disini kapanpun kamu membutuhkan mereka)

b. Going to

- Can be used for subject I, You, We, They, He, She and it

- Using to be am/is/are after the subject, example: I am going to..., She is

going to Expressing a desire but only a limited (intention)


Example:

I am going to your birthday party tonight (Saya (mungkin) akan datang ke

pesta ulang tahunmu malam ini)

She is going to be a teacher (Dia akan menjadi guru) [baru sebatas keinginan]

My mom is going to buy vegetables at supermarket (Ibu saya akan pergi ke

supermarket untuk membeli sayuran)
