“General Biology”
Quarter 1
Week 4.1
SAQ-1: Why do cells divide?
 Cells divide in a matter of growth or for living things to grow and also cells
divide for many reasons. For example, when you skin your knee, cells divide
to replace old, dead, or damaged cells, Organisms grow because cells are
dividing to produce more and more cells.
SAQ-2: How are mitosis and meiosis similar and different?
 Cell divide and reproduce in two ways, Mitosis and Meiosis, Mitosis Involves
one cell division and results in two daughter cells and the Daughter cells are
genetically identical, Occurs in all organisms except viruses. Meiosis on the
other hand involves two successive cell divisions and results in four daughter
cells but the daughter cells are genetically different, occurs only on animals,
plants and fungi and in terms of similarities, both Mitosis and Meiosis are
diploid parent cell and consist stages which is the Interphase, prophase,
metaphase, anaphase and telophase but twice in meiosis and also both ends
with cytokines.
SAQ-3: Why is meiosis a significant process in terms of passing on of information to new generations?
 Meiosis is responsible for the formation of sex cells or gametes that are
responsible for sexual reproduction. It activates the genetic information for the
development of sex cells and deactivates the sporophytic information and the
purpose of meiosis is to shuffle genetic information and cut the cellular
chromosome number in half, from 46 chromosomes to 23 chromosomes. In
this way, when an egg and sperm cell combine during fertilization, the
resulting embryo will inherit the appropriate amount of unique genetic
information from each parent.
SAQ-4: How do plants and animals continue to grow all their lives?

Plants and animals continue to grow because the cells in them undergo division or
cell division, is like our dead skin healed because of cells that undergo cell division.
The meristematic cells undergo division throughout their lifespan and in animals the
neurons do not undergo division.
Let’s Practice!!!
Task 1:
A. Mitosis

1. Prophase 2. Cytokinesis 3. Anaphase 4. Metaphase

5. Telophase 6. Interphase
B. Meiosis I and II

Task 3:

1. Mitosis is a process that divides the cell into two daughter cells, when you
have a wound, skin cells ill constantly replicate themselves through mitosis to
make more copies of themselves, ultimately creating more skin to cover the
wound.
2. Meiosis this type of cell division that would account for female puberty,
because it produces and are responsible for sexual reproduction and which
enable a female body to bear a child when she reaches puberty.
