ABRASIVE BLASTING

Learning Objectives 2

Workers to be able to:

Identify the proper and

safe work practices while
abrasive blasting
operations.

Identify the proper PPE

and precautionary
measures to prevent
injuries while operating.
Typical Hazards
Dust, micro clime (toxic fumes), noise, vibration,
hazardous substances
High pressure, pneumatic hoses, compressed air,
throwing of splinter/fragments, spills and jet
Cut, abrasion, puncture during normal handling
Machine/tools contact with moving and rotating parts
Posture/ergonomics, slippery floors, fatigue/ psycho-
physical stress
Static electrical current-shocks. Fire and explosion.
Silica sand has been the most hazardous abrasive
commonly used. In several country is forbidden and
when possible, substitute materials with lower toxicity
levels shall be used.
Typical Hazards

EXAMPLE:
Potential Air Contaminants Associated with Abrasive Blasting in Shipyards

Source Potential Air Contaminants

Base Material Aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper,
(e.g., steel, aluminum, stainless steel, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, and zinc
galvanized steel, copper-nickel and other
copper alloys)
Surface Coatings Copper, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead,
(e.g., pre-construction primers, tributyl tin compounds, zinc
anticorrosive and antifouling paints)
Arsenic, beryllium, amorphous silica,
Abrasive Blasting Media
cadmium, chromium, cobalt, crystalline
(e.g., coal slag, copper slag, nickel slag,
silica, lead, manganese, nickel, silver,
glass, steel grit, garnet, silica sand)
titanium, and vanadium
Sources: EPA, 1997; EPA, 2000; NFESC, 1996; NIOSH, 1998.
Blasting Operation 5

The type of coating to be removed or applied shall be known in order

to make a proper evaluation of the hazard of the residue.
Jet operators shall wear an air-line respirator continuous flow, as per
breathing apparatus guideline, with protective hood to cover the head,
neck, shoulders, and chest. Hood view ports shall be made of impact-
resistant material. Further the standard PPE they shall also wear leather
gloves, hearing protection and coveralls;
Assistants may require all of the above personal protective equipment,
dependent on their proximity to the operator. Pay attention defined a
safe system of work, because they could be well expose to dust/noise;
Other workers interested by the activity shall wear a dust-filter
respirator approved for the airborne contaminants likely to occur from
and ear protection as needed;
Other PPE may be required depending on the work being carried out
and the location;
Select correct tools and materials for job (motor generator, compressor,
hoppers, material bags, etc. scaffolding, temporary light, lifting devices, etc.
as needed);
Typical Abrasive Blasting Tools
Typical Abrasive Blasting Gun to BE Death Man OFF
Self-actuating cut-off devices
Abrasive blasting equipment must be fitted with a fast acting self-
actuating cut-off device under the direct control of the nozzle operator.

Never point a jetting gun or nozzle at anyone or any part of the body
Blasting Area 8

Locate working area downwind of the job if possible;

When working on an open grating, the floor shall be covered to
prevent a hazard to any personnel below, or the area below
should be barricaded off
Housekeeping - keep work area clean / remove all trip hazards;
Barricade area with tape and/or shields if needed;
Post warning signs "JETTING AREA -KEEP OUT" - Keep non-
essential persons clear;
Wherever possible, the area should be evacuated of all
personnel not connected with the abrasive blasting operation
Jetting system (motor generator, compressor, hoses, equipment,
tools, etc.) to be anti-static type and so grounded as needed;
Jetting equipment may only be operated with all protective
guards and controls in place and working properly, in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendations;
All hoses shall be properly secured with proper joints and protection
systems, such as safety clamps;
Jetting system shall be inspected always before use and provided with
“dead man” control shut off;
General Precautions 9

Ensure that you are properly trained on using the equipment

Listen carefully to the Toolbox talks before conducting the job, in

order to know the related hazards and Safe Work Practice

Ensure that the tools you use are in good condition

Worn, damaged, or defective tools and equipment must not be used

Always Use the Proper PPE

Don’t eat before you wash your hands thoroughly

Blasting Protection 10

Ask your supervisor for the

proper PPE:
Safety helmets
Safety goggles
Hood/Face-shields
Overalls
Earplugs/ ear defenders
Boots
Gloves
Facemasks and filter masks
as required for helpers
Overalls should be taped at
the ankles, cuffs and collars to
exclude grit and dust.
Helper
Blasting Pollution 11

Adequate provision shall be taken to

minimize spread of jetting material and
dirt during blasting operations to protect
the environment and also adjacent area;
Dust must not be allowed to accumulate
on floors, walkways, or aisles. Dust spills
must be cleaned as soon as possible,
preferably not during blasting execution
to avoid exposition to dust. All spent
jetting material to be removed from the
site;
The residue shall be cleaned up
regularly and disposed of in accordance
with environmental regulations:
contaminated material must be
characterized and waste properly
disposed;
Aisles and walkways must be kept clear
of steel shot or similar scrap materials,
avoiding slipping hazard.
