WORK SCHEDULE 52 weeks; 22 days of vacation plus 8 contract days EFFECTIVE DATE OF EMPLOYMENT: As soon as possible DUTIES: 1. Reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent. 2. Supervises and evaluates Academic Directors and Supervisors. 3. Leads the academic team to align, coordinate and articulate instruction, curriculum and assessment Pre K-12. 4. Implements, monitors the effectiveness, and refines the Learning Center. 5. Sets the vision for the effective practices of teaching and learning across the district as it aligns with district priorities and the Springfield Improvement Framework. 6. Leads the development, writing, revision monitoring and implementation of all curriculum and assessments. 7. Supervises the development and distribution of district formative assessments, and all approved diagnostic ongoing assessments. 8. Collaborates with the Chief Schools Redesign Officer to develop and implement a district-wide professional development plan aligned with the Springfield Improvement Framework. 9. Supervises the development of rigorous coursework and professional development for all content areas. 10. Initiates grant opportunities to enhance the teaching and learning priorities of the district.

Works with principals and administrators to implement grants within the schools, including but not limited to the professional development and student assessments required by the grant(s). Analyzes, coordinates, and collects data and collaborates with building principals and central office staff for assessing student achievement. Uses data to determine the teaching and learning needs of the district and helps with the writing and reviewing of school improvement plans. Evaluates the curriculum, assessment and instructional programs of each school and directs the implementation of necessary changes. Collaborates with principals, administrators and teacher leaders to develop and maintain curriculum standards, develop mission statements, and set performance goals and objectives. Observes teaching methods and examines learning materials in order to evaluate and standardize curricula and teaching methods, and to determine where improvement is needed. Provides professional development for the Academic Directors and Supervisors. Works collaboratively with the Chief Schools Officers, the Chief School Redesign Officer to ensure best practices and accountability. Works in partnership with community-based organizations and higher education institutions to provide support to schools. Oversees the adoption and use of varied instructional materials, including textbooks, reference works, instructional kits, and multimedia aids. Devises and maintains such records and reports as are necessary to the successful execution of the job. Makes decisions using multiple resources to analyze problems effectively. Keeps abreast of instructional trends, current research and practices. Works with the human resources department and principals in the process for recruiting, hiring, and retaining highly qualified staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Licensed as a supervisor/director or principal by the Massachusetts Department of Education. 2. Masters degree from an accredited college or university. 3. At least five years successful experience as a building-based or central office administrator. 4. Strong knowledge of learning theories and the ability to apply them 5. Successful experience in improving student achievement. 6. Experience or educational background in professional development planning and administration. 7. Experience in planning and implementing a rigorous and developmentally appropriate curriculum. 8. Experience in accessing and analyzing data to inform decision making.

9. Experience in leading and participating on academic teams and in professional learning communities. 10. Knowledge of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. 11. Advanced communication skills.
