TEOFILO GARCIA
 A 2012 awardee is a farmer in the town of San
Quintin, a municipality in Abra Province, better
known for tending a plot of land filled with enlarged
upo or gourd.
 After planting the upo in November and harvesting
the mature fruit during the summer months of March
to May, Garcia would transform the harvest into
durable hats protecting people, especially farmers
exposed for long hours under the heat of the sun.
 each upo or tabungaw(in Ilokano)
is hallowed out, polished, and
varnished, which gives the tabungaw
hat a distinctive yellow sheen.
 the varnished strengthens the
organic material to make it weather
resistant
 thin strip of rattan or uway are woven
to line the hat, while another type of
intricate weave, usually made of fern
or nito, is placed on the mouth of the
hat as decoration,

Expertise:
silver plating of
religious and
secular art
 has dedicated his life to creating religious and secular
art in silver, bronze and wood,
 his detailed retablos, mirrors, altars and carosas are in
churhes and private collections.
 a number of these works are quite large, some
exceeding forty feet, while some are small and feature
very fine and delicate craftsmanship.
 he discovered his talents when he was 29 years old.
 things began to change after his 5th and 6th year as a
furniture maker, when a colleague taught him the art of

cotabato, Mindanao
EXPERTISE:

tinalak weaving
 uses abaca fiber stripped from
the trunk of the banana tree and
colored with red and black dyes
naturally extracted from roots
and leaves of plants.
She was only 12 when she first learned how to weave.
Through the years, she has dreamed that, someday
she could pass on her talent and skills to the young in
her community. Four of her grandchildren are learning
to weave.
 She knows a hundred designs, including the
bulinglangit (clouds), the bankiring (hair bangs), and
the kabangi (butterfly).
 Using red and black dyes, she spins her stories with
grace. Her textiles reflect the wisdom and the visions
of her people.

 INABEL WEAVING
Inabel or Abel Iloko is a kind
of fabric that is handwoven on
large antique wooden looms
via a weaving process called
Abel, by the women of Ilocos. GAMABA Awardee Magdalena Gamayo.mp4
 starting at the age 16, when she learned the art of
weaving from her aunt.She was never formally
taught, but picked up the art on her own.
 Her father bought her first loom at the age of 19,.
Her first loom lasted her atleast 30 years.
 Even though Magdalena is already 88 years old,
her eyesight still holds true and still takes care of
arranging the threads on the loom.

used by Bagobo-
Tagabawa ancestral
royalty.
 Salinta Monon had watched her mother's nimble
hands glide over the loom weaving.
 At 12, she presented herself to her mother, to be
taught how to weave herself
 She developed a keen eye,for the traditional
design, and now, at the age of 65, She can identify
the design as well as the author

 DARHATA SAWABI
 Pis siyabit weaving is a difficult art. Preparing the
wrap alone already takes three days
 It is a very mechanical task, consisting of stringing
black and red threads across a banana and
bamboo frame to form the base of tapestry.
 At 48, and burdened by years of hardwork, Sawabi
no longer has the strength or the stamina for this.

MAT WEAVING
 She made unique colorful mats with
complex geometric patterns, which shows
her precise sense of design, proportion and
symmetry, and sensitivity to color. The
unique multi-colored mats she makes are
covered with plain white outer mat that
serves as the mat’s backing.
Is recognized as the master mat weaver among
the SAMA indigenous community.

The art of mat weaving is handed down, as men
in the Sama culture do not take up the craft.
The whole process from harvesting and stripping
down the pandan leaves to the actual execution
of the desgn, is exclusive to women

his instrument

 Music was to become his constant companion.He is a
YAKAN, a people to whom instrumental music is of much
significance connected as it with .
 Uwang's teaching style is essentially hands-on.He teaches
by showing; his students learn by doing. His hands
constantly keep a firm hold on those of his students, the
gentle pressure encouraging them to tap out music from the
bamboo blades and the splendid brass gong.
 His soft voice sings praises when merited and lightly
censures when necessary and each student receives his full
attention while the others persevere in learning and
perfecting the art

His own love for his people's folklore began when he
was a small child.His mother lull his brothers and sisters
to sleep, chanting an episode in time to the gentle
swaying of the hammock.Sometimes it was his great-
great-grandmother, Anngoy Omil, who would chant the
epics.
Nong Pedring remembers how he would press against
them as they cuddled his younger siblings, his
imaginator recreating the heroes and beautiful maidens
of their tales.
His fascination naturally grew into a desire to learn to
chant the epics himself

Expertise: Musician and
Storyteller
An outstanding master of basal, kulilal and bagit is Masino, a
gifted poet, bard artist and musician who was born near the
head of the river in Makagwa Valley on the foothill of
Mantalingayan mountain.
Masino is not only well-versed in the instruments and
traditions of the basal, kulilal and bagit but also plays
aroding(mouth harp) and babarak(ring flute) and above all is
a prolific and epic chanter and story teller.
He has the creative memory, endurance, clarity of intellect
and spiritual purpose that enable him to chant all through the
night, for successive nights, countless tultul(epics),
sudsungit(narratives) and tuturan(myths of origin and
teachings of ancestors

 AMBAHAN
a poetic literacy form composed of seven syllable lines
used to convey messages through metaphors and
images
is sung and its messages range from courtship, giving
advice to the young, asking for a place to stay, saying
goodbye to a dear friend and so on.

MANGYAN
 a common cultural aspect among cultural
communities, is the oral tradition characterized by
poetic verses which are either sung or chanted.

 an initial grant of P100,000
 P10,000 monthly stipend for life.

Known as the "Weaver of Peace",
Parangbasak, Lamitan, Basilan.
She is a Yakan Tennun Weaver who
mastered two weaving techniques -
suwah bekkat (cross-stitch like
embellisment) and suwah pendan
(embroidery like embellishment).

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES OF
AN AWARDEE?
HOW DOES ONE BECOME A MANLILIKHA NG
BAYAN?
• To become a Manlilikha ng Bayan, an individual or group candidate must:
– Possess a mastery of tools and materials needed for the traditional, folk art and be a
maker of works of extraordinary technical quality;
– Have consistently produced works of superior quality over significant period;
– Have engaged in a traditional and folk art which has been in existence and
documented for at least fifty (50) years;
– Command respect and inspire admiration of the country with his character and integrity;
– Must have transferred and/or willing to transfer to other members of the community the
skills in the traditional and folk arts for which the community has become nationally
known.
– However, a candidate who, due to age or infirmity, has left him/her/them incapable of
teaching further his/her/their craft, may still be recognized provided that he/she/they
must possess the qualifications as enumerated above.
For the individual awardee:

– The rank and title of Manlilikha ng Bayan, as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines
in accordance with Executive Order No. 236 or Honors Code of the Philippines;
– The GAMABA gold-plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and
citation;
– A lifetime emolument and materials and physical benefits comparable in value to those
received by the highest officers of the land such as:
• A minimum cash award of Two Hundred Thousand Pesos (Php 200,000.00), net of
taxes.
• A minimum lifetime personal monthly stipend of Fifty Thousand Pesos (Php 50,000.00).
• Medical and hospitalization benefits not exceeding Php 750,000.00 per year.
– A state funeral, the arrangements for and the expenses of which shall be borne by the
Government, upon the death of the Manlilikha ng Bayan; and
– A place of honor, in line with protocol precedence, in state functions, national
commemoration ceremonies and all other cultural presentations.
For the group awardee:
– The rank and title of Manlilikha ng Bayan, as proclaimed by the
President of the Philippines in accordance with Executive Order
No. 236 or Honors Code of the Philippines;
– The GAMABA plaque for the group;
– A one-time award of Two Hundred Thousand Pesos (Php
200,000.00), net of taxes;
– The group shall designate its leader who will represent and
attend events and functions on behalf of the group. The said
representative will also have a place of honor, in line with
protocol precedence, in state functions, national commemoration
ceremonies and all other cultural presentations.
