Present simple practice
Aim: To practise the present simple for talking about states, habits and routines.
Differentiated worksheet A is the least challenging worksheet, with the most support.
This is recommended for the least confident learners.
Differentiated worksheet C is the most challenging worksheet, with the least support.
This is recommended for the most confident learners.
Differentiated worksheet B is between Worksheets A and C.

Procedure:
The worksheets are designed to be self-explanatory. They can be set for homework. Remember
to choose the most appropriate worksheet for each learner’s level. Tell learners to look at the
information in the box at the top of the handout and use it to answer the questions.

We use the present simple to talk about habits, routines and states.
Habit A habit is something that you do often, sometimes without
knowing that you are doing it. For example:
I always play online at the weekends.
Routine A routine is a fixed way of doing things. For example:
I start school at 9 o’clock every day.
State A state is a situation or condition. It is not an action.
We use verbs like be and feel to express states.
For example:
He is really cheerful and fun to be with.

A The present simple is used to refer to habits, routines and states. Complete the gaps with the correct
