Aim: To know when to use the present simple, the past simple and the present perfect
to talk about a place.

Procedure:
The worksheets are designed to be self-explanatory. They can be set for homework. Remember

Worksheet 3A: Past and present


Present simple We use the present simple to talk about what places are like nowadays
and what people do there.
 The city is very modern and hi-tech.
 Nowadays, people travel by car and by train.

Past simple We use the past simple to talk about the following:
Finished past events: Tokyo’s metro opened in 1927.
Past repeated actions: Before trains, most people used a horse and cart or
they walked.
What places were like in the past: Cities weren’t as busy a hundred
years ago.

Present perfect We use the present perfect to show a connection between the past
and the present.
 Tokyo’s metro has been an important form of transport for many years.

Read the sentences.


 Write ‘present simple’ next to the sentences that contain a present simple verb.
 Write ‘past simple’ next to the sentences that contain a past simple verb.
 Write ‘present perfect’ next to the sentences that contain a present perfect verb.
