Security information
Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that support the
secure operation of plants, systems, machines, and networks.
In order to protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is
necessary to implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic, state-of-the-art industrial
security concept. Siemens’ products and solutions form one element of such a concept.
Customers are responsible for preventing unauthorized access to their plants, systems,
machines and networks. These systems, machines and components should only be
connected to the enterprise network or the Internet if and only to the extent necessary and
with appropriate security measures (firewalls and/or network segmentation) in place.
You can find more information on protective measures in the area of industrial security by
visiting: (https://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity).
Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them more
secure. Siemens strongly recommends performing product updates as soon as they are

6.3.4 Ping
You can send text message to the device using the "Ping" button in the "System information"
section. The duration until the response to the request of a ping is output in the output
window for logging data. Transponders are not always ready to receive. Requesting a ping
may be delayed as a result.
NOTICE
Qualified personnel
All IP configuration related configurations may only be performed by qualified personnel
with expertise in the client "Network configuration".
In the "Values on node" section, you can read the values set on the device relating to its
network operation, set new values or the default value by clicking the respective button.
After each change, click "Reset" to enable the new values for the device.
The values to edit are Duplex mode, DHCP mode, Device IP, Server IP, Subnet mask, and
Gateway IP. It may be necessary to change these values, for example, during the
commissioning of the Locating Manager to adapt to the local IT network or to change your
local network infrastructure.
6.4 System
You can perform the following actions under "System" in the tree topology:
• Network-specific actions, such as exploration
• Enable and disable localization service
• Update of the firmware of the devices
• Back up database settings
• Manage licenses
• Make configurations for logging.
You can also see information about the current server version and the scope of licenses.
6.4.1 Network
You can control the wireless network and its functionalities under "System > Network" in the
tree topology.
You can perform the following actions:
• Enable or disable the wireless network
• Start exploration
• Import pre-configured device coordinates or save existing coordinates
• Import saved coordinates
• Query and display routing information
The "TDOA time master" sub-item enables the definition of the time master for the "Time-
Difference-Of-Arrival" (TDOA) technology. The cyclically transmitted signals of the
transponders are received in a time-synchronous network and the propagation time
difference of the signals is measured. The Locating Manager server uses the propagation time
difference to determine the position.
6.4.3 Exploration
If at least one gateway has been configured and enabled, you can automatically search the
topology of the RTLS localization network via the exploration in the tree topology under
"System > Network". Starting from this gateway, exploration searches the wireless network
for additional infrastructure devices. All wireless receivers are located within range,
integrated into the network via static routes, automatically assigned to the respective
"DEFAULT" group in the tree topology and configured. Based on the resulting network, a
search is conducted for further wireless systems which could not be reached in the first step.
If no further gateways or anchors have been located, the exploration is complete. Exploration
may take several minutes depending on the size of the RTLS localization network. The "Start"
button below the exploration configuration is disabled during this time. The exploration
progress is recorded in the output window for logging data.
Note
If gateways with Ethernet are used, you need to perform an exploration. At the end of the
exploration, enable the gateways to connect to the transponders.
When you integrate new gateways into an existing production system, this setting is not
active to avoid affecting the existing production system.
Transponders are not localized with exploration. Instead, they are automatically added and
included in the tree topology if the RTLS localization network has been set up correctly. If you
have enabled the "Localization" option in the transponder display screen (section "Using a
device in the network / enabling localization (Page 24)"), the transponders can be located. If
you have enabled "Partial exploration", you can select individual nodes which serve as new
starting points for partial exploration.
Note
Navigation in the map
You can use the scroll wheel of the mouse to navigate faster through the routing or metric
map. Rolling the wheel shifts the display range vertically and holding down the shift key
moves it horizontally. By using the scroll wheel and the control button at the same time, you
can zoom in and out of the map.
6.4.5 Routes
Basically, it is recommended to use the routes automatically generated during the
exploration. In individual cases, such as with variable wireless accessibility of the device
infrastructure (e.g. an occasionally high bus or pallet stack covering devices), it is
recommended to create additional routes. This ensures permanent accessibility of the
Locating Manager server by the infrastructure devices. Routes with the highest priority are
shown in red, routes with lower priority in blue.
Selecting routes
If you enable the arrow symbol to the right of the graphic, you can select routes or
individual devices in the graphic. If you select a device or the Locating Manager server, the
devices for which there is a direct route are displayed. The selection displays the route
information of the selected route.
You can delete all routes of the selected device with the "Remove routes" button. With this
option, make sure that new routes are created if required so that the device remains
accessible. If a device does not have a route to the Locating Manager server, it no longer
participates in the communication. It can still be used for locating if it was configured as last
active for locating.
Creating routes
It is generally recommended to use the automatically generated routes and only create
additional alternative routes. Proceed as follows to create a route:
1. Click to create a route.
2. Select the target device by clicking the mouse while pressing the Shift key.
3. Now select the device or devices through which the target device is to communicate with
the server, up to the server if it is shown.
If the Locating Manager server is hidden, double-click the last device before the server (i.e. a
gateway) so that the route is extended to the Locating Manager server.
4. Click the button if you want to create several routes in order to remain in creation mode
after creating a route.
5. Click the button if the routes are to be created in both directions, i.e. from the device to
the Locating Manager server and in the opposite direction.
The route for the respective opposite direction is created automatically when the first route
direction is created.
Note
When you select the "Server warning" check box, a warning appears in the output window
for log data to indicate that a created route does not extend to the server.
6. Enable the crosshairs and click on the desired position on the map. The x and y
coordinates of the position are displayed in the output window for logging data.
It may be helpful to query positions (in each case to the reference point/coordinate origin) in
the map.
7. Click "Save" to save all the changes you have made. Click "Enable" to apply the changes and
transfer them to the node.
You can find more options for creating routes in the "Routing" section.
Button Description
Restore This button allows you to restore deleted routes.
This only works if the deletion has not yet been saved.
Delete The button deletes the entire routing set.
Copy Use the button to create a new routing set that corresponds to the one currently
displayed. This enables you, for example, to add additional routes based on the
automatically generated routing data record without changing the old data
record. This allows you to reactivate the old routing set at any time.
Validate You can test the routing set using the button. Any errors such as the missing
server connection of individual devices are displayed in the output window for
logging data. You can use the "Only routes" check box below to check devices for
which there are routes.
Clear Use the button to delete all routes in the routing set. The "Gate <-> Server"
button is then the first action to be performed. This creates routes from Locating
Manager server to all gateways.
List The button triggers the output of all routes in the output window for log data.
The devices are identified by their network address and the priority ("weight") of
the respective route is also displayed.
From metrics Click the button to create new routes from the last available metric set if a metric
set has been loaded in the client.
Check device Use the button to check whether the routes in the user interface match those
saved on the devices. The result of the check is displayed in the output window
for logging data.
Columns Description
Column 1 Describes the costs of a route
For the routes automatically created with exploration, this information indicates
how good and fast a route is (internal calculation from the number of hops to the
server and the corresponding reception field strengths on the route). As a rule,
the most effective routes are always used.
Column 2 Describes the message source
The device whose data is to be transmitted to the Locating Manager server or the
Locating Manager server in the reverse direction.
Column 3 to n-1 Intermediate routers that transfer messages from the message source in column
2 to the message sink (Locating Manager server or reception node) in column n.
Column n Message sink
Setting Description
Remove both ways Select this check box to delete routes for both directions if the
corresponding action is executed via "Right-click > Menu".
Highlight node Select this check box to highlight the corresponding route and device by
highlighting the table cell on the map.
On top You can use this check box to keep the displayed table in the foreground.
If this check box is cleared, the table is moved to the background of the
user interface.
The shortcut menu in the table allows you to make further settings.
Setting Description
Remove route Click this button to delete the route selected in the table. Note here
whether "Remove both ways" was enabled beforehand.
Remove route highlight Click this button to show all routes and devices displayed on the map in
the same way.
6.4.6 Metrics
The metrics are relevant when routes are optimized or created manually. You can also use the
metric to run error diagnostics, especially to determine whether an infrastructure device is
wirelessly accessible. A metric data record shows which devices can reach each other
wirelessly and how well at the respective time they were set up. A metric set is created with
each exploration. All potential wireless connections or metrics between the individual devices
are displayed.
Click the button to select objects in the map. You can decide whether you want to display
the selection of infrastructure devices and/or metrics by selecting the corresponding
and/or buttons.
As soon as you select an infrastructure device, a section for this device appears. The device
type, the network address and the name are displayed.
Button Description
Readout Clicking the button measures the current reception field strength and stability of
the wireless connections.
Remove metrics The button allows you to delete the metrics of the selected device or metric.
Relocate in map You can reposition a device by clicking the button.
To do this, select the device. Click "Relocate in map" and then on a new position
within the map.
Save This button becomes active when you have selected a new position for a device.
Click the button to save the position.
Restore This button becomes active when you have selected a new position for a device.
Click the button to undo the change.
After selecting a single metric, the associated metric data appears. The network and device
names of the two devices involved are displayed as source (Src - Source) and destination (Dst
- Destination). If you click the "Src <-> Dst" button, you can swap the direction of the data
transfer. The button allows you to edit or create metrics simultaneously in both directions.
RSSI is an indicator for the quality of the reception field strength, where 127 is the maximum.
If you click the "Range" button, a distance measurement between the two devices is triggered
and the result is displayed in the "Dist cm" text box.
"Stability" shows the stability of the radio connection between the devices on this router. The
value range is from the value "0" to the value "100".
You can use the metrics to create alternative routes. To do this, read the metrics of the device
to be connected via a route several times in succession at short intervals. This quickly
analyzes which other device is the most stable for the route.
If the metric data record contains nodes that no longer exist (e.g. because the device has
been replaced), an error message appears. If the affected node served as an intermediate
point of a route, it is recommended that you manually create a new route to the destination
device or perform a new exploration.
6.4.7 Services
WAMP router
The port of the WAMP router can be enabled for incoming connections from other PCs when
the programming interface "ExportEpaperAPI" is to be reachable from other PCs. After
changing this configuration, the Locating Manager server must be restarted for the change to
become effective.
Statistics
Certain processes in depots, plants or other localization areas are monitored and statistically
recorded by the Locating Manager as a process model. The statistics are used, for example, to
detect and evaluate how many vehicles are in the depot and which of these vehicles have not
been detected in the entrance area. If you click the "Load configuration" button in the
"Statistics" section, the configuration files for the Locating Manager statistics module are re-
read without stopping the Locating Manager server to do this. This is useful if you have made
changes to configuration files. Clicking this button signals all Locating Manager services that
they must read the modified "StatisticConfig.xml" and "StatisticProjectConfiguration.xml"
configuration files.
The "Select" command in the shortcut menu offers options according to which the devices are
automatically selected in the list. The option representing the best solution in the specific
case depends on the respective project status. Note that the selections are added together.
This means, for example, that if you first select "Transponder" and then "Anchor", all
transponders and all anchors are selected.
In the "AddNode" section, all available firmware files are displayed in the shortcut menu. You
can use the "R" button to update this list after you have copied a new file into the firmware
directory, for example. Select the firmware to be transferred to the previously selected
devices. Select the "List only matching" check box to improve the clarity of this list. After you
click the "R" button, firmware files that do not match the selected devices are hidden.
If you select the "Show idle nodes" check box, devices whose firmware update has been
completed will continue to be displayed in the list. If the check box remains cleared, these
devices will be hidden after a certain period of time. The update process starts as soon as you
have selected the "Add" button.
The "State counter" section shows the number of devices updated via the selection made, as
well as the status the devices have.
All devices to be updated are listed individually below.
Name Description
Address Shows the network address of the device
Description Shows the name of the device
Current Shows the current firmware version
Target Shows the firmware version after the update
State Shows the current status of the update
StateId Shows the corresponding status number
Counter Shows the number of attempts of the update
If you select a firmware version that does not match, the update is not performed for the
corresponding device. Instead, a warning is issued.
No license
If no license is available, the following view appears:
Manual assignment
If one or more devices have no license and licenses are not assigned automatically, this is
displayed in the overview of the respective device group. A warning appears in the view of
the affected device itself.
Select the corresponding sub-item in License Management to assign a license from the quota
to the device. Select the affected device in the "Transponder known to the system" section
and click the arrow button to move it to the "Mobile nodes with license" section. As soon as
you click the "Save" button, the device is available for localization. You can use the "Restore"
button to undo the changes you have made.
Note
In general, it can be assumed that the license is sufficiently large for the number of devices.
Therefore, it is recommended to use the automatic (temporary) assignment as described
above. Manual, individual assignment of licenses only makes sense in exceptional cases.
6.4.10 Protocols
With "System > Protocols", you can configure whether and for how long the localization data
of the transponders should be stored and whether old log entries should be deleted
automatically.
Note
Only make changes to these settings in consultation with Siemens AG or very experienced
users.
Setting Description
Restore button This button is enabled when you change one of the settings. Click the
button to undo the change.
Save button Click this button to save the settings you have made.
TrackDist The log stores the distance debug data of the transponders to the nodes.
TrackPos The log stores the calculated position data of the transponders.
Save You can configure whether or not the log is to be saved in this column.
Double-clicking on the column name selects or clears all check boxes below.
Duration You can configure the storage duration of the logs in hours in this column.
If you move the mouse pointer over the "Duration" text box, the duration is
displayed in days. You can also enter days or weeks in the text box. To do
so, enter "2d" for "2 days" or "3w" for "3 weeks", for example. This input is
automatically converted into hours.
Delete You can configure whether or not the old logs are to be deleted in this
column.
Double-clicking on the column name selects or clears all the check boxes
below.
