Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Alexis Jones

Date:3/2/23 Group Size: 21 Allotted Time:45 mins
Grade Level: 2nd grade Subject or Topic: Solar System - Inner and Outer Planets
Common Core/PA Standard(s):

Learning Targets/Objectives:
● The second grade students will be able to differentiate the inner planets from the
outer planets
Assessment Approaches: Evidence:
1. Observational 1. Anecdotal notes
2. 2. Inner and Outer Planets
Compare and Contrast
Assessment Scale:
Subject Matter/Content:

Prerequisites:
● Background knowledge on what they already know about planets
Key Vocabulary:
● Solar System: the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around
the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and
comets. The planets of the solar system are (in order of distance from the sun)
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
● Planet- A planet is a large, rounded astronomical body that is neither a star nor
its remnant.

Content/Facts:
● What the students already know
● Video
○ Video about the inner and outer planets
● What are the inner planets
○ What are the inner planets
○ Characteristics of the inner planets
● What are the outer planets
○ what are the outer planets
○ characteristics of the outer planets

Anticipatory Set

1. “Today we are going to learn about the inner and outer planets and complete a
fun activity after”
2. Teacher will ask “Does anyone know any of the planets”
a. Students will answer
3. Teacher will play video https://youtu.be/KWEn5wINQH0

4. Teacher will say “What did we learn in the video about our inner and outer
planets”
a. Students will answer

Development/Teaching Approaches
● Teacher will say “We learned a lot of information about the inner and outer
planets in that video but now I have slides to tell us more about the planets”
● Teacher will pull up the powerpoint

● Teacher will say “We have 8 planets in our solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.”
● Teacher will say “These planets are broken up into two groups. One group is
called the Inner Planets and the other group is called the outer planets. They are
divided by the asteroid belt”
● Teacher will say “So what are the inner planets”
● Teacher will say “The inner planets are mercury, venus, earth, and mars”
● Teacher will say “What makes it an Inner Planet”
● Teacher will say “Inner planets are closer to the sun”
● Teacher will say “Another name for the inner planets are called terrestrial
planets”
● Teacher will say “The inner planets are smaller than the outer planets”
● Teacher will say “The inner planets are rockier”
● Teacher will say “The inner planets are more dense”
● Teacher will say “Here are some fun facts about the inner planets”
● Teacher will say “None of the inner planets have rings”
● Teacher will say “When they orbit the sun its short”
● Teacher will say “They spin more slowly than the other planets”
● Teacher will say “Venus spins backwards and is the slowest spinning planet”
● Teacher will say “Now that we know about the inner planets, let’s learn about the
outer planets”
● Teacher will say “What are the outer planets”
● Teacher will say “The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune”
● Teacher will say “Outer planets are bigger than the inner planets”
● Teacher will say “They are mostly made up of gas”
● Teacher will say “Another name for the outer planets are the gas giants”
● Teacher will say “The outer planets are lower in density”
● Teacher will say “The outer planets are further away from the sun”
● Teacher will say “Here are some fun facts about the outer planets”
● Teacher will say “They are mostly made up of two gases called hydrogen and
helium. Those are the same elements that make up most of the sun”
● Teacher will say “All the outer planets have rings made of dust”
● Teacher will say “Only Saturn’s rings can be seen from earth through a
microscope”
● Teacher will say “Now that we learned about the inner and outer planets I want
you to tell me what your favorite fact you learned about”

○ Students will turn and talk

● Teacher will say “Now we are going to do a fun activity. You will need your
scissors and glue stick”
● Teacher will hand out paper
● Teacher will say “For this activity you are going to cut out each box. You will then
glue it in the circles. One circle is for the inner planets and one circle is for the
outer planets. The middle circle is for both”

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
● Teacher will say “Great job today! I hope you learned some things about the
planets”
Accommodations/Differentiation:
● Teacher will help student if they get stuck
