It can be shown in facts and figures that cycling is the cheapest, most convenient, and
most (25) ------------ desirable form of transport in towns, but such cold calculations do
not mean much on a frosty winter morning. The real appeal of cycling is that it is so
enjoyable. It has none of the difficulties and tensions of other ways of (26) ------------ so
you are more cheerful after a ride, even through the rush hour.
The first thing a non-cyclist says to you is: "But isn't it terribly dangerous?" It would
be foolish to deny the danger of sharing the road with motor vehicles and it must be
admitted that there are an alarming number of accidents involving cyclists. However,
although police records (27) ------------ that the car driver is often to blame, the answer
lies with the cyclist. It is possible to ride in such a way as to reduce risks to a minimum.
We are sorry to inform you that the 9:02 a.m. bus from Bedford Mall to Glen Street

will no longer run.
As there are usually very few people on this bus, we (28) ------------ to cancel it until
further notice. Please understand that we are not doing this to (29) ------------ you. In fact,
this is a step to save you money. The cost of running unpopular routes adds to overall
ticket prices. We would love to be able to offer you all the routes, all the time, but sadly
we are just not able to. Hopefully, we will be starting a new route that passes through
both Bedford Mall and Glen Street, though as yet that remains undecided.
If anyone has (30) ------------ questions about this matter, please contact the Valley

The most usual way to entertain friends at home is to invite them for a meal, either in
the evening or at lunchtime on a Sunday. In smaller communities, for example a country
village, people also invite each other for a drink before a meal, for morning coffee or
afternoon tea. When guests are invited for a meal, they often sit and chat while they have
a drink before the meal, and coffee is usually served afterwards. Several friends are
sometimes invited at once to make a small party. These parties are almost always
Page 5/10 – Paper code ENGL132
informal. Formal occasions, when written invitations are sent out and people dress
formally, rarely take place in people’s homes, although they did in the past.
Larger parties are arranged to celebrate a particular event. Children’s birthdays are
often celebrated with a tea party for the child’s friends. The meal will often be followed
by party games. Parties are held to celebrate a person’s coming of age (formerly at 21 but
now at 18), a couple’s silver wedding anniversary (after 25 years of marriage), a couple’s
engagement and New Year’s Eve. In the USA a person’s 40th birthday is often marked
with a special celebration. A housewarming party is sometimes held to invite friends to
one’s new home.
In summer, if the weather is fine, people may hold a barbecue in the garden. A much
grander, more formal occasion is a garden party, held in the afternoon, when tea is
served.
Yellowstone National Park is the site of some of the most famous natural wonders in
the world, including geysers, hot springs, deep canyons, waterfalls, and great evergreen
forests. Yellowstone is the oldest national park in the United States. It covers an area of
land approximately 60 by 50 miles. Most of the land is located in the state of Wyoming,
but it also spreads into Idaho and Montana. Scientists believe that the landscape of
Yellowstone was created by a series of volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago. Molten
rock, called magma, remains under the park. The heat from the magma produces the 200
geysers and thousands of hot springs for which Yellowstone is well-known.
Of all the wonders in Yellowstone, the main attraction is a famous geyser, Old
Faithful. Approximately every 65 minutes, Old Faithful erupts for three to five minutes.
The geyser erupts in a burst of boiling water that jumps 100 feet in the air. Other geysers
in the park produce a spectacular sight, but none are as popular as Old Faithful.
Geysers may differ in frequency of eruption and size, but they all work in much the
same way. As water seeps into the ground, it collects around the hot magma. The heated
water produces steam, which rises and pushes up the cooler water above it. When the
pressure becomes too great, the water erupts into the air. The cooled water falls back to
the ground, and the cycle begins again.
Yellowstone Lake measures over 20 miles long and 14 miles wide. It is the largest
high-altitude lake in North America. It lies almost 8000 feet above sea level.
Evergreen forests of pine, fir and spruce trees cover 90 percent of Yellowstone Park.

Two hundred species of birds are found in Yellowstone. More than 40 kinds of other
animals live in Yellowstone, which is the largest wildlife preserve in the United States.
Visitors to the park may see bears, bison, cougars, moose, and mule deer.
Yellowstone National Park offers more than 1000 miles of hiking trails. Over 2
million people visit the park each year.

The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways are
water, land and air pollution.
Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by human activities. It
can be harmful to organisms and plants which live in the water. Water pollution occurs
when wastes are discharged from waste water treatment plants. Other known causes are
factory wastes or leaking underground tanks. These can be chemical substances that are
toxic. The polluted water can cause cholera and typhoid fever. Water pollution has led to
the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.
Land pollution is the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. It is often
caused by human activities such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals
and wrong use of land for planting. All these will affect our health in the long run. They
will lead to all kinds of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and breathing problems.
Land pollution also brings about natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides.
Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other
dangerous materials are released into the air. This happens through the release of carbon
monoxide gas from exhaust pipes of motor vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides
are released from the burning of coal and oil. High air pollution levels can cause damage
to the environment. It also brings discomfort to humans and other living organisms. In the
long term, air pollution can cause serious breathing problems, lung cancer and heart

She can’t get you a flight on Tuesday morning. There is a flight late on Tuesday
afternoon and one on Wednesday morning. Which do you prefer? Also, she can get you a
room at the Grand Hotel, as you requested, but she can get you a better deal at the

About the flight, he’ll choose the second option, but he’ll stay with his first choice for his
hotel. He plans to stay the weekend and would like a flight back on Monday evening,
arriving no later than 8:30, if possible. Also he has a vacation next month and would like
to go the beach. Can you look into travel arrangements for him?
Thank you both for the wonderful wedding present. Both Jill and I have always
wanted to go to France and visit the many museums. We were so shocked when we first
saw the airplane tickets that we almost fainted! It was more than we could have hoped
to receive airplane tickets to France as a wedding present! Paris is wonderful! The only
trouble is trying to decide where to go. I want to go to the museums, but Jill wants to
see some of the beautiful traditional churches. In the end, we decided to see the
churches in the morning (when the weather is cool), and the museums in the afternoon
(because they’re air-conditioned). This allows us to get the most sightseeing done
during our two-week stay. There are many coffee shops, too. Jill likes sitting outside
and watching people, but I like sitting inside where I can enjoy the smell of the coffee.
French coffees are so much more aromatic and stronger than the coffee we are used to
back home. Thanks again for the lovely trip! We sent you a postcard, but I think we will
arrive back home before you get it. It is a picture of the Eiffel Tower.
Love,
Freddy and Jill

Jack had gone to the university to study history, but at the end of his first year, his
history professor failed him in his examinations, and he was told that he would have to
leave the university. However, his father decided that he would go to see the professor to
urge him to let Jack continue his studies the following year.
‘He’s a good boy’, said Jack’s father, ‘and if you let him pass this time, I’m sure he’ll
improve a lot next year and pass the examination at the end of it really well.’
‘No, no that’s quite impossible!’ replied the professor immediately. ‘Do you know,
last month I asked him when Napoleon had died, and he didn’t know?’
‘Please, sir, give him another chance,’ said Jack’s father. ‘You see, I’m afraid we
don’t take any newspapers in our house, so none of us even knew that Napoleon was ill.’
