Topic 1 Definition of Human Behavior and Theories

Research:

Human behavior – refers to be the capacity of mental, physical, emotional, and social activities
experienced during the five stages of a human being's life which entails the prenatal, infancy,
childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. This definitely encompasses the behaviors as dictated by
culture, society, values, morals, ethics, and genetics (Business Dictionary, 2016).

Human behavior -is the expression used to depict a person's actions and conduct (Boyd, 2016).

Theories:

1. Psychoanalytic Theory- mostly focused on drives unconscious-preconscious-

consciousness which was made by Sigmund Freud (DePoy & Gilson, 2012).
2. Topographical Theory- which reflects the considerations such as Unconscious if
repressed fantasies and experiences of childhood and adolescence; inaccessible to
consciousness and then there is preconscious which shows accessible to consciousness and
constitutes a censor which blocks the unconscious. Then also there is conscious-sensations
due to stimuli from the outer world and inner events (Quizlet, 2017).
3. Structural Development- the theory that explains the Personality Development of
human. Infant is a pure id, embraced and managed by the pleasure principle and requests
total and instantaneous indulgence or gratification. Id bumps with truth turning out to
move to ego development. The ego builds up practical strategies for coping, entailing the
competence for delaying gratification. In early childhood, the oedipal complex exists,
which creates the superego (Quizlet, 2017).
4. Positivist or Objectivist Theory- expounds that social phenomena possesses a genuine
and real existence that can be said as factual and can be learned or studied via natural
science research methods and the discovery of the underlying laws (Greene & Kropf,
2010).
5. Theory of Cultural Relativism – pertains to be values, beliefs, models of behavior, and
conceptions of the nature of the world must be realized and recognized with understanding
within the framework of the culture in which they take place. The prevailing culture
concludes the contours and boundaries of normality and deviance. Ethnic behavioral
norms and expressions of emotional needs may be at variance from those of the superior
culture and may be defined as abnormal (Quizlet, 2017).

6. Humanistic Theory – is explained by Carl Rogers as a theory where people have at their
earnest and sincerest core a positive goodness and will express that when accepted and
trusted ( Tammico, 2012).
7. Trait/Type Theory- is the theory that explains behavior as based of types of personality
or traits. Types are made up of traits, which in sequence are encompassed of several habits
like extroversion, optimism, care freeness, impulsivity, moody, easygoing, etc. (Tammico,
2012).
