LESSON 5 – Advanced Presentation Skills

INTRODUCTION
PowerPoint is one of the most used presentation software along with keynote and Prezi. In
this lesson you will learn how to create an effective PowerPoint presentation that you can
use for your research projects, performance tasks, or even in college and at work. Microsoft

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:


a. Use hyperlinks to improve their slideshow(s);
b. Create an effective PowerPoint; and
c. Maximize slideshow(s) as an effective visual aid tool.

SUBJECT MATTER

Microsoft Excel
PowerPoint is part of the Microsoft Office Suite and serves as the presentation and slide show
tool. Users familiar with other Microsoft products, such as Word and Excel, will find many
similarities in PowerPoint’s menus, toolbars and buttons. Businesses, Students and many
other people and institution use PowerPoint to create slide shows, filling in information
slide-by-slide, adding photos, charts, text and even movie clips. PowerPoint gives the
organization complete control over how the slides appear, including the ability to add a logo,
how quickly the slides move and branding/color ability.

Creating an Effective PowerPoint Presentation

The following are the principles on how to create an effective presentation


1. Minimize
2. Clarity
3. Simplicity
4. Visuals
5. Consistency
6. Contrast
Minimize

▧ Keep the count of your slides to a minimum.


▧ Your PPT is just a visual aid tool.
▧ Most information should come from the reporter.

Clarity
▧ Make sure your Font Style as well as Size is easy to read.
▧ Consider the size of your venue and audience.

Simplicity
▧ Use bullets or short sentences.
▧ Summarize the information so that your audience can focus.
▧ Observe the 6x7 rule, 6 lines and 7 words.

Visuals
▧ Use graphics for better presentation.
▧ Graphics should be appropriate and related to the topic and not distracting.

Consistency
▧ Design should be uniform.
▧ Avoid having different backgrounds, font-styles, and images.

Contrast
▧ Colors should complement each other and uniform.
▧ Always remember that words on your PPT should be easy to read.

Aside from following the Principles in creating an effective presentation you can also use
Hyperlinks.

Hyperlink
▧ a text or object that contains a link to another file:
- web page
- a place in this a document
- a link to a new document
- email address.
How to use Hyperlinks

1. Select an Object or Text


a. Highlight the texts or click the object.
b. Right-Click and then select Hyperlink

2. Insert the Link

You have the following options inserting your hyperlink: Existing File or Web page, Place in
this Document, Create a New Document or E-Mail Address.
If you plan to insert an Existing File or Web page:

Red Box: Indicates that you can select for a file that you want to open.
Blue Box: On the Text Field you may include here your URL of the website that you want to
open.

If you plan to insert a link using Place in this Document:

It will allow you to set Hyperlinks on any slide in your PowerPoint Presentation.
If you plan to create a new Document by using Hyperlink you may use Create a New
Document:

Click CHANGE to a new Dialog box that will allow you to choose for a Document type and
save it.
If you plan to insert Hyperlink in an Email:

Timing and Animation

▧ The series of incremental movements or motion that adds effect in an object or text.
Steps in using Timing and Animation

1. Open Animations Tab


a. Open Animation Tab.

b. Click Animation Pane


2. Select an Object or Text
a. Highlight the texts or click the object.
b. Add Animation
3. Apply Timing
a. Select the Timing for your Animation:
- On Click
- With Previous
- After Previous

The following are the Timing Options that can be applied to your Animation:
1. On click – The Animation will only be displayed when you Click a button on your Mouse or
Press Next in your Keyboard
2. With Previous – The object or texts’ animation will be displayed ALONG WITH the ON
CLICK Animation
3. After Previous – The Animation will be displayed AFTER the ON CLICK Animation
ACTIVITY
Directions: Create a Quiz Show covering lessons 1-4. Follow the rules and use the features of
MS PowerPoint to make your presentation more effective.
