language:
What is a word?
A single distinct meaningful element of speech or
writing, used with others (or something alone) to
form a sentence and typically shown with a space
on either side when written or printed.
What is a sentence?
A set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing
a subject, and predicate, conveying a statement, question,
exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main clause
and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.
A sentence must not always consist
of more than one word, such as:

1. One-word commands: ‘GO!’, ‘Sit!’


2. Warning shouts: ‘Fire!’
3. conventional commands: ‘lights!’, ‘Camera!’, ‘Action!’
4. Holophrastic words: (infant speech),‘Milk’, ‘Cookie’
A dictionary entry basically listed:

1. Definitions of what it means


2. Information about grammar (word class)
3. Pronunciation
A word is not just a building block of sentences:

*It is a building block with:


1. Meaning (that is) 2. Unpredictable

or at least sufficiently unpredictable that learners of


English or even native speakers of English may need to
consult a dictionary in order to discover it.
Words are units of language which are
basic in two senses:

1. Words as items that have unpredictable meanings & so must be listed


in dictionaries (i.e., lexical items). [semantics]

2. Words as building blocks that form phrases and sentences (i.e., word).
[Grammar]
Words as types & words as tokens:

Tokens refer to:

The total number of words in a text, corpus, etc, regardless


of how often they are repeated.

Types refer to:

The number of distinct words in a text.


How many word types & tokens does this
sentence
(A good drink is a drink that you like)
contain?

(9) Tokens but only (7) types, as (a & drink) are


repeated.
Words with predictable meanings :

Some words have meanings that are natural or


predictable, such as:

1. Onomatopoeic words: 2. Sound symbolism:



words whose sound seems slide, sleek, slip


to reflect their meaning.


(all of them reflect the meaning
e.g. bow-wow, Miaow of smoothness).
3. Words like ‘de-yeltsin-izes’ in the following sentence:

‘President Putin deyeltsinizes the Russian government’


A nonce word used only once, but we can predict its


meaning depending on:

1. The affixes added to it


2. Its position in the sentence
