SMART DEVICES IN MEDICINE 2
Abstract
Chronic conditions continue to dominate on a global platform, wreaking havoc in the lives of
those affected. In 2018, the world has mourned the loss of several icons including John Mc
Cain, Aretha Franklin and Stephen Hawking who all succumbed at the hands of chronic
illnesses. By the year 2030, it is forecasted that about 48% or 171 million people in the
United States of America will be living with one or more chronic conditions and worldwide
the latest figures estimate that about 17.5 million people will die from cardiovascular disease
each year, which will account for 30 per cent of all deaths (Avkiran, n.d.). While various
types of medication and equipment have been developed to treat and diagnose medical
combating chronic diseases. This paper explores the use of smart devices to treat and manage
illnesses. In addition, to examine the various types of smart devices and their abilities
specifically designed for medical use and their function in patient care and support. The paper
links the use of smart devices to the current convergence era of IoT (Internet of Things) and
their placement in the medical field. The researched devices include implantable devices,
sensors, wearable devices and aesthetic oriented devices. The findings of this research paper
revealed that smart devices are very effective in assisting doctors with forming rapid
diagnoses, detecting and correcting deviations in homeostasis to manage and treat chronic
illnesses and monitoring biochemical parameters to provide efficient patient care and support.
As innovation improves, it is very likely that more diverse devices with new capabilities will
By the year 2050 doctors will become obsolete as the rise of automation connotes robots
performing surgery on humans. Recently, the Da Vinci robot was successful in the surgical
removal of pre-cancerous cells from the colon of Theresa Chudy from Arkansas. Robots and
other intelligent devices have proven to perform more effective surgeries, diagnoses and
treatments as their high level of algorithmic accuracy and precision is incomparable to that of
the human brain. The world is threatened by an upsurge of chronic illnesses like diabetes and
cardiovascular illnesses. To combat this phenomenon, the technological giants of this era
seek to eject the archaic methods of traditional diagnosis and disease treatment in real-time
by inundating the medical sector with innovations, to assist physicians. With the hopes of
achieving better treatment and ultimately improved patient care, in March 2018, Google
signed a major cloud computing deal that promises to set the stage to make a transition from
traditional medical devices to smart ones that track and evaluate data (YouAreUNLTD,
2018). Our world is currently woven in the convergence trend with artificial intelligence and
smart devices serving as the latest integration platforms. Smart devices are influencing the
dynamics of healthcare by offering a broader scope of options and solutions in the areas of
Conclusion
The technological giants have convinced society that innovation does trump ordinary by
demonstrating that smart devices are effective in the medical field. Bioengineers have
successfully tapped into the resources of the cutting-edge technologies and integrated them
into the medical sector. As the positive testimonies such as that of Laura Hood, continue to
increase, so will the demand for such devices and the acceptance of their uses in healthcare.
Medical personnel will continually demolish the barriers that hindered the invasion of the
human body on a cellular level as the evolution of smart devices allows them to enter a new
medical treatment, diagnostics and patient care. Although this technology has not yet
infiltrated the undeveloped world where it is greatly needed, emphasis should be placed on
educating the masses on the subject matter to ensure that they are ready to receive them and
their health benefits. As the great race continues, innovators will continue to deliver new
devices with intelligent features that will better serve the medical community and by
