III. ACTIVITIES

A. Let Us Review

Direction: Recall your experience and the outcome of your interview and answer the
questions that follow:

1. Do we still have a market for products made of bamboo, wood, or metal in spite of
the present pandemic? Please explain.
2. What are the commonalities among the customers’ preferences of bamboo, wood, or
metal industrial products?
3. Which types/sources of innovative finished product, accessories, and/or designs are
the most marketable today?

B. Let Us Study

Sketching is a type of drawing that is done completely freehand. It is a technique used to

create both the initial representations of final drawings and the final pieces of art. You may use a
variety of materials in sketching. But, for the exercises in this lesson, the use of ordinary pencil is
recommended.

Let us now examine the different ways of holding a pencil when sketching. Below are the
four different kinds of grips for drawing: (1) basic tripod grip, (2) extended tripod grip, (3)
underhand grip, and, (4) overhand grip.

1. Basic Tripod Grip. The most common method for holding a pencil – the same one
you probably use for writing. This grip can be done through the following steps: (a)
position the pencil between your forefinger and middle finger; (b) brace the opposite
side of the pencil with your thumb; (c) lift your wrist off of your drawing surface;
and, (d) use both your wrist and forearm to draw.

2. Extended Tripod Grip. This method uses the same hold as the basic tripod but the
grip rests further up on the pencil.

3. Underhand Grip. This is a popular way to hold a pencil for sketching. To perform
this, you need to accomplish the following: (a) pinch the pencil between the pads of
your forefinger and thumb; (b) rest your other fingers against the shaft of the pencil;
and, (c) run the tip of the pencil along the paper using your whole arm.

4. Overhand Grip. An overhand grip is almost identical to an underhand grip except

for the position of your wrist. This can be done through a series of steps, which
include: (a) from the underhand grip position, turn your wrist over to switch to an
overhand grip; and then, (b) shade broad areas with the side of your pencil.

Another equally important technique in decorating a finished product is shading. Shading
is the process of creating the illusion of form, space, and light which can make a drawing appear
three dimensional. There are many shading methods that you can use in your drawing. Now, I
want you to read and understand the following techniques below because you will be applying
them later in the succeeding set of exercises:

1. Start with hatching for a basic shading technique. Hatching is making a series of
parallel lines to simulate shadows in your drawing. You can space the lines closer
together to make darker shadows or the lines can be spaced further apart to make the
area seem brighter. Hatching lines can be horizontal, vertical, or at an angle.

2. Use cross-hatching to shade quickly.9 Cross-hatching builds onto hatch marks by

adding a second layer of lines going at an opposite direction. This method of shading
allows you to make areas darker quicker than basic hatching.

3. Work with stippling for a stylized look. Stippling is a time-intensive process of

lifting your pencil up and down from the paper to make a series of dots or short lines
on your drawing. Make an area of your drawing darker by keeping the dots close to
one another.

4. Use blending for a smooth appearance. Blending your shading gives your drawing
a smooth and realistic finish and requires the most time and technique to do correctly.
Shade with the side of a soft graphite pencil and increase the amount of pressure you
apply to the paper to make transitions between light and dark values.

In connection to this, you can also use another method of decorating your finished
product through outlining or contour drawing. Contours are the outlines of your drawings. So, in
contour drawing, you will only be drawing the outline of the subject. Its purpose is to emphasize
the mass and volume of the subject rather than the minor details. (Source:

C. Let Us Practice

Directions. Follow the instruction inside the box. You will need a pencil and a piece of bond
paper for this activity. Then, answer the questions that follow:

1. Choose a subject/object to draw. Sketch the basic shape (outline) that composes the
chosen object.
2. Make a form of the object from the drawn basic shape.
3. Apply one shading technique in the drawing in order to add value to the drawing.
4. Enjoy drawing your chosen object.

Answer the following questions:

1. Describe your experience (your feelings, thoughts, etc.) on this activity.

2. Describe your drawing after you apply the chosen shading technique.
3. Are you satisfied with your work? Explain.
4. Would you like to apply sketching, shading, and outlining on your product? Why?
Why not?
5. What are the benefits that you will get from applying these techniques on your
finished product?

Directions. Now, take your sketch, trace the lines of your sketch using a permanent marker (see
illustration below) then answer the questions that follow.

Questions:

1. Based from what you have read and experienced in this lesson, how do you define
sketching, shading, and outlining?
2. How do these techniques help in enhancing the appearance of the product?
3. Would you like to include these techniques in decorating your finished product? Why?
Why not?

F. Evaluation

A.
Directions: Sketch a design on a piece of wood or metal or on your finished product (as
