What is the importance of Problem-based learning to:


a. Teachers
The importance of PBL to the teachers is that it enables them to adapt
and utilize a new strategy in their classroom that will help the learners
enjoy the teaching-learning process. When students are having fun and
showing interest during the learning experience where the strategy is
used, they will always be looking forward to doing it anew. Thus, class
attendance increases and teachers pedagogical approach is exemplified.
b. Students
The importance of PBL to the students is that it binds their interest and
attention and goals together as they seek for solutions to a problem they
were able to identify. In addition, it helps the students to have a greater
understanding of complex concepts and those that they find difficult
comprehending. In the long run, problem-based learning develops
students whom are lifelong learners.
c. Parents
The importance of PBL to the parents is that it helps them cultivate and
hone their children’s skills—for instance, critical and analytical thinking,
that will someday become beneficial to them as they face the challenges
of the real world. Also, when students are interested with the subject
matter, there will be less of them who are making troubles at school. With
this, parents will be at ease with their children’s education.
d. School heads
The importance of PBL to the school heads is that it allows them to
build a school that is rooted in providing solutions to problems so making
school learning like rea-world learning. It will also help them to give new
inputs and perspective in teaching-learning process when amending
school curricula and or when implementing programs that highlights in
making schools an authentic learning milieu.
e. Community
The importance of PBL to the community is that it makes them an ally
of the students or the school in general in providing solution or working
towards a solution for an existing problem that is relevant to the them. The
community can serve as the working-field/laboratory where they will be
looking and working on with their problems.

3. Following the steps of PBL, choose one problem and present your output.
Problem: Poor English reading ability of seventh grade students

Defining the problem: The shift of the Philippine curriculum due to pandemic—
from face-to-face learning to blended or online learning, has resulted to a
great number of seventh grade students with poor English reading ability
according to a survey.

Formulating a hypothesis: If an 1hour/day reading tutorial will mitigate the


number of seventh grade students with poor English reading ability

Testing the likely hypothesis using appropriate methodology: A volunteer


tutors will be identified and will be tasked to teach the students to read from
basic sight words and common words to more complex words. The tutorial will
run for a month. After, students will undergo a reading test to ascertain
improvements they are able to make.

Gathering, recording and analyzing data: The data gathered shows that 95%
of the students were able to make improvements with their reading ability—
they can now read and understand better and faster than before they took the
tutorial. However, some students though can now read fast basic sight words
are still having difficulty reading complex words.

Arriving at a conclusion: The 1hour/day tutorial was able to provide seventh


grade students with poor English reading ability the necessary assistance to
improve their skill reading. Moreover, the strategy used which was teaching
them to read from basic sight words to complex words is found to be effective
in making students read and understand better.

4. Give the strengths and weaknesses of problem-based learning.


Strengths:
 Children will be able to tackle whatever difficulties they meet
 Stimulates reflective thinking and furnishing a guide for organizing ideas
 Develops independence and initiative
 It builds scientific attitude of considering all data accurately and objectively
and testing the conclusion carefully
 Child’s attitude towards school work is improved due to their psychological
drive to learn
 Provides opportunities to utilize facts to real life situations
Weaknesses:
 The different steps are time-consuming
 This methodology is recommended for those who possess patience and
persistence to continue the search for answers even if takes a long time
 Some students lack the analytical and critical mind to process the data
gathered resulting in incorrect conclusions
 Superficial thought
 Over-rationalization
 Forming hasty conclusions
 Losing-sight of the main thought

5. Which of the different problem-solving methodologies do you prefer? Give


example of a real world problem which you will solve using that methodology.
Methodology: Brainstorming
Real world problem: Among the many Covid-19 vaccines, which should
the government must procure for its people?

6. If you are a teacher today, how will you solve the problems of our country
today regarding the teaching-learning mode?

If I were a teacher today, I will solve the problems of our country today
regarding the teaching-learning mode by providing students
approaches/methodologies in teaching that are amenable and efficient to
them. I will not require them to go online when they can’t even afford to have
mobile phones and internet connectivity is unavailable or at its worst often
times, but rather resort to modular learning scheme. In addition, I will
supplement this by doing home visitations to students who are struggling to
comprehend concepts in deem to the subject matter. As a 21 st century
teacher, I should be flexible.
