because he owns a small business. He'll rejoin the family sometime next year.
Miguel's family had to wait almost ten years to immigrate to the United States. They applied for a
visa when Miguel was two years old. They didn't realize it would take so long to obtain permission
to enter the United States. They're happy about their new lives, but they get homesick from time
to time, and they miss Alfredo.
Miguel is gradually adjusting to his new life in Minneapolis. He still struggles a little with his
English, but his new American friends are helping him learn about the language and the culture.
He's in his second year in high school, which means he's a sophomore. He has two more years

Astronomers and other scientists constantly research and explore space. One of the most
intriguing questions they hope to answer one day is whether life exists on other planets. Despite
a lot of research in outer space, scientists have not yet been able to find evidence of life forms on
any other planet other than Earth.
Earth is very hospitable, which makes living here easy. Earth has water, which living creatures
need to survive. Earth also has an atmosphere that is neither too hot, nor too cold. Its distance
from the sun provides Earth's inhabitants with the proper amount of warmth, sunlight and energy.
Although there may be other planets that have some of Earth's hospitable features, so far
scientists have not found any with all of the features they believe necessary to sustain life. Earth
remains one of a kind!

Andrew: What is your favorite space movie, George?
George: It must be “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” by Steven Spielberg.
Andrew: When did it come out?
George: 1977. It’s about a Roy Neary, an ordinary worker in Indiana. His life changed completely
after an encounter with a UFO.
Andrew: A close encounter is when a person witnesses an unidentified flying object, isn’t
it? What is, the third kind?
George: Oh yes. The term “close encounter” and the system of classification was started by an
astronomer and UFO researcher Allen Hynek. According to his classification, close encounters of
first kind are when there is visual sighting of a UFO less than 500 feet away with considerable
details. Close encounters of second kind should be accompanied with some physical effect, such
as animals reacting, vehicles malfunctioning, or impressions on the ground.
Andrew: What about the third kind? Is it when the UFO is even closer?
George: Those are encounters when an animated creature is present, like robots or humans or
humanoids who seem to be passengers or pilots of the UFO.
Andrew: Are there other kinds of encounters?
George: Yes, other subtypes of encounters were added later. Now there are seven kinds of
encounter.

I like Australia best among the English speaking countries. Australia is the smallest continent in
the world. It is also the 6th largest country in the world. There are over 20 million people living in
Australia. Australia is divided into six states and two territories. The capital city is Canberra, which
is in the Australian Capital Territory. I have always wanted to visit Australia so that I can see the
Sydney Opera house with my own eyes and touch the kangaroos with my own hands. Australia is
the destination of my dream.
