RENAL FUNCTION AND

STUDIES
Kidney function tests measure how efficiently your kidneys
are working. Most of these tests check how well your
kidneys clear waste from your system. A kidney test may
involve a blood test, 24-hour urine sample or both. Some
kidney function tests include creatine, creatinine-urine,
creatine clearance, and BUN test.

NORMAL AND
VALUE INDICATION
A creatinine test is a
For adult measure of how well your
kidneys are performing

from your blood.
Creatinine is a chemical
1.35 mg/dL compound left over from
energy-producing

muscles. Healthy kidneys
micromoles/ filter creatinine out of the
CREATININE blood. Creatinine exits

product in urine.Low

For adult creatinine means that

there is too little creatine

body. This state will relate
to 1.04 mg/dL to the liver, muscles, or
diet. High levels of
creatinine usually mean
(52.2 to 91.9 that there is too much
creatine in the body, or
micromoles/ that creatinine is not
being filtered and
L removed from the body
properly.
The blood urea nitrogen
(BUN) test reveals
important information
about how well your
kidneys are working. A
BUN test measures the
amount of urea nitrogen
that's in your blood. A high
BUN level means your
kidneys aren't working
well. But elevated BUN can
also be due to:
BLOOD 6 to 24 Dehydration, resulting
from not drinking enough
UREA mg/dL
(2.1 to fluids or for other

reasons.
Urinary tract obstruction.
NITROGEN 8.5 mmol/L ) A low BUN value may be
caused by a diet very low in
(BUN) protein, by malnutrition, or
by severe liver damage.
Drinking too much liquid
may cause overhydration
and cause a low BUN value.
Women and children may
have lower BUN levels than
men because of how their
bodies break down protein.
