ENGINEERING FEATS

(1) Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX)

As a newly-built structure, the Cebu-Cordova Bridge is now considered the longest


bridge in the country with a total length of 8.9 kilometers from Cebu City to Mactan
Island in the province. There has a 400-meter cable-stayed main span with the support
of two single pylons, rising to a height of 145 meters and a 60-meter navigation clearance
to allow ship for navigate. The project also includes viaduct approach bridges, causeway
bridges as well as toll-road facilities on an artificial island.
(2) Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2, Lapu-Lapu City

The terminal features an iconic roof structure composed of an array of glulam


(glue-laminated) arches that span every 30m, enabling the building to be as column free
as possible. The special aspect of the design: there is no other airport building in Asia
with the use of structural timber as its main elements for creating the large span roof, to
the rattan furniture as well as fittings that is Cebu’s local art and craft.
(3) SM Aura Premier, Taguig, Metro Manila

The structure of SM Aura Premier takes its name by combining two elements such
as gold (Au chemical symbol) and radium (Ra chemical symbol). Putting them together
means luxury and elegance emanates from within. SM brings limitless energy and
unmatched magnetism into its design and retail mix. With a total gross floor area of
249,861 sqm melding of mall and office tower designed to stand out not only visually, but
also with the well thought of architectural and operational highlights for the enjoyment of
customers. SM Aura Premier started construction in 2009 and it was formally opened on
May 17, 2013.
(4) Okada Manila

Okada Manila boasts an impressive Y-shaped hotel that consists of two wings and
is designed with a gleaming gold exterior, making it the new iconic structure on the Manila
Bay horizon. The Pearl and Coral wing, comprising 15 floors each, will house a total of
993 deluxe rooms, ranging from spacious 60 sqm deluxe suites to luxurious 1,400 sqm
villas.
(5) University of Santo Thomas – Main Building, Manila

The construction started at 1923 and finished at 1927 with 200 workers from
Pampanga. This oldest university was built by a Spanish priest civil-engineer Rev. Fr.
Roque Ruaño. It is 86 meters long and 74 meters wide, and it’s the first ever earthquake-
resistant building in the Philippines. The building is composed of 40 independent
structures separated from one another by a gap of one inch which is filled with loose
cement. One of these structures rises beyond the level of the fourth floor to form the
tower, at the top of which is a Cross. This tower and cross can be seen from many parts
of the city.
(6) Paoay Church, Ilocos Norte

One of the most famous and oldest churches in the Philippines, completed in 1710
after 2 decades of construction. It is adorned with eight pilasters and 24 extravagant coral-
block buttresses and ornate stone finials that hold it up and protect it against earthquake
damage.
(7) Philippine Arena, Santa Maria, Bulacan

Philippine Arena is one of the world’s largest indoor arenas, with measuring 243
meters long and 193 meters wide, can accommodate up to 50,000 fans in a fully enclosed
building. It is designed as one-sided bowl in a tight, compact saddle shape that is high in
the center and drops at the flanks. This structure insights by the traditional Filipino Nipa
Hut and the indigenous Narra tree.
(8) The Imperium – Capitol Common, Pasig

Standing 62 storeys high, the Imperium design is simple and elegant, made up of
clean lines that emphasizes its circular form from afar. This is uniquely complemented by
its trapezoidal canted windows and a light shelf, reducing the need for artificial lighting
while adding illumination and offering a scenic view of the city as well as the Capitol
Commons park below.
(9) San Juanico Bridge, Metro Manila

It is considered as the longest bridge in the Philippines spanning a body of


seawater with the length of 2.162 kilometers (1.34 mi) and width of 10.620 meters
supported by 43 spans. The 4-year construction of San Juanico Bridge started in 1969
and costs $21.9 million. It is part of the Pan-Philippine Highway, stretches from Samar to
Leyte across the San Juanico Strait.
(10) Ambuklao Dam, Bokod, Benguet

It is the first and largest hydroelectric power plants constructed in the Philippines
and is made of earth and rock, measuring 129 meters high and 452 meters long. The
hydro reservoir capacity is 327 million cubic meter that can produce up to 105 megawatts
of electricity to the Luzon grid.
