I, Opportunities in Industry 4.0

Conduct a comprehensive research and literature review for the opportunities of a
Mechanical Engineers in Industry 4.0. Identify the key QUALITIES and SKILLS that are
needed to effectively penetrate these sectors. List ten (10) companies that can be
considered as advanced players in these sectors and discuss each one.
II. Interview a Mechanical Engineer
Conduct an interview with at least two (2) Mechanical Engineers that are currently
practicing their mechanical engineering profession in the Philippines or overseas. Use the
following questions as a template (you may add questions relevant to the topic):

1. What is your name?

2. Where and what company are you currently working on? What is your role?
3. How long have you been in this company/role?
4. What are the most important skills you’ve identified that are helpful and
needed in your profession?
5. In your opinion, what are the most important skills that mechanical
engineering students should possess and develop to be effective professionals
in their future workplaces?
6. What do you think are the future opportunities for mechanical engineers in the
next 5-10 years?

I.

Technology is expanding the potential for mechanical engineers to create and launch enhanced
goods and adapt those products to evolving client needs. In recent years, new technologies
such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and robotics have emerged with the potential to
have a transformative impact on the industry, the economy and society as a whole.
Historically, creating new equipment and systems, needed engineers to create many prototypes
before reaching the final version. When more data becomes accessible, mechanical engineers
would be able to speed the design process, conduct precise assessments, and make products
relying on the outcomes In fact, the speed and scope of technological transformation are
exponential, with unlimited potential and unlimited opportunities. On the other hand, there is
a delay in preparing human resources to be resilient and adaptive in mastering technology,
predicting markets, and the ability to transfer skills

Industry 4.0—the combination of digital processes such as the Internet of Things, automation,
robotics, and additive manufacturing—has a disruptive impact on mechanical engineering
design. Not only do engineers need to redesign processes and operations to accommodate these
new advances, Industry 4.0 impacts how they design products for increasingly smart
manufacturing facilities.

As Industry 4.0 takes hold, forward-thinking engineers will embrace these digital tools and
technologies. This allows them to make higher-quality products more efficiently and react
more quickly to shifting consumer demands, building customer loyalty and gaining market
share. Millennials, for example, are a rapidly growing population that expects tailored products
that match their personal preferences. Brands that offer personalized products typically enjoy
a 50 percent higher loyalty rate. Unfortunately, traditional manufacturing methods are designed
for mass production, not customization. Companies that can rapidly adapt production lines to
exploit consumer trends are more likely to have implemented Industry 4.0.

With the evolution of Industry 4.0 and transformation in the realm of technology, newer domains
of skills are required to excel in this novel field. Some of the skills that an individual can work on
and develop are:
- Analytical Ability
- Critical Thinking
- Familiarization with new technologies
- Eager to learn about upcoming technologies
- Effective Problem Solving
- Both a team player and a team leader
- Ideation
- Innovation
- Attention to detail
- Creativity and originality
