Filipino painter Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, also known as "BenCab," received the National

On April 10, 1942, Democrito Cabrera and Isabel Reyes had BenCab at Malabon,

older brother Salvador, who was already a renowned artist when BenCab was a child, was the
source of his first exposure to and discovery of the arts.
He has held numerous exhibitions as a painter and printer not only in the Philippines but
also in Asia, Europe, and the US. In a four-decade career, he has received numerous significant
artistic honors. He was awarded the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 1992. (Cultural Center of the
Philippines Award for the Arts).
Why did I choose
BenCab’s work
“CRISIS IN
HUMANITY”?
I chose this artwork
because it shows Cabrera's
opposition to the period of
resurgent fascism and blatant
historical revisionism in this
artwork. This artwork also
focuses on the humanitarian
issue that we are currently
experiencing, particularly in
the Philippines, where some
people still have colonial
mindsets ingrained in them
despite the fact that we have
severed links with our
conquerors a long time ago.
The poor, the uneducated, and
the mistreated are some of the
persons who might be most
impacted by a humanitarian
crisis; their absurd and
dreadful faces suggest that
they are pleading for
assistance.
Every person faces a daily struggle, no matter how small or significant; it is a necessary
that we cannot function without. The human race is depicted in this painting in a state of chaos
that is difficult for us to even comprehend. This is not because the painting is poorly produced or
that it doesn't want to be understood, but rather because it is intricately constructed. This painting
depicts society; it has too many faces and heads for us to consider, but we'll never know what
these individuals are thinking about—not just for themselves, but also for the society as a whole,
as sometimes people are the issue, the ones who would undermine others for their own benefit.
This artwork really resonates with these times, during an age where sickness flows
through the air and evildoers run the streets of the Philippines. We might just be one of the many
people in the painting who are affected by this crisis.
