■ A Filipino national artist in creative dance.
She played the piano, drew art, designed
scenery and costumes, sculpted, acted,
directed, danced and choreographed.
■ A pioner Filipino choreographer known to
many as “The trailblazer,” “The mother of
Philippine theater dance,” and “Dean Of
Filipino performing arts critics.”
She has produced stunning choreographies during
her 50-year career, highlighted by “Filipinescas:
Philippine life, legend, and love,” which elevated
native folk dance to its highest stage of
development.
■ A questing creative spirit, she transmuted national ethnic forms into the
contemporary mold of the interpretative dance.
■ She confronted the endless challenge of elevating Philippine dance to high
creative art, lifting it to its peak of national artistic development.
■ Her works are indisputable classics of the genre. In these creations, she distilled
the Filipino soul, dramatized the lives of her people in the challenging language
of movement which infinitely enriched the national culture wielding a tremendous
influence on interpretative Philippine dance development, blazing a trail for
others to follow.p
■ Dr. Roces eulogized her as "the greatest of all our national artists" because "she
dedicated her entire life to dance" and was a great choreographer because "she
knew the Philippines thoroughly,“

On June 3 une 1961, Rosendo embarked on an international tour as music director
for the 38-member Filipinescas Trouoe. This now legendary tour was the creation of
pioneer director-chorreographer, Leonor Orosa Goquingco. Entitled, “Filipinescas:
Philippine life, legend, and lore in dance,” evolved from Orosa Goquingco’s interest in
the folk dance, it is a symbolic and truly artistic 5-part stage presentation depicting
Philippine life and its rich culture traditions.

•She appeared in War Dance and Planting Rice. Other works she choreographed were
"Circling the Globe", "Dance Panorama", "Current events", "Vinta!", "Morolandia",
"Festival in Maguindanao", "Eons Ago: The Creation", "Filipinescas: Philippine Life,
Legend, and Lore in Dance", "Miner's Song", "The Bird and the Planters", "Tribal", "Ang
Antipos"(The Flagellant), "Salubong", "Pabasa" (Reading of the Pasyon) and "Easter
Sunday Fiesta".

•She was also a writer, and her articles were published in Dance Magazine (New York
City), Enciclopedia Della Spettacolo (Rome), Grove's Dictionary of Music and
Musicians (London), Arts of Asia (Hong Kong) and the Philippine Cultural Foundation,
she wroteDances of the Emerald Isles and Filipinescas: Philippine Life, Legend and
Lore in Dance.
Leonor Orosa-Goquingco also wrote a poem on the Japanese occupation, Lifted the
Smoke of Battle,
