1. INTRODUCTION:
Methyl bromide is a highly specific fumigant used to control a number of pests in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops and in wood products. Its primary application is for quarantine treatment, soil fumigation and post harvest protection. Fumigation is generally carried out by covering the commodities within a leak proof enclosure and applying methyl bromide at a concentration ranging from 50 mg/l to 150 mg/lit. As a process control measure it is necessary to monitor the gas concentration at various stages of fumigation. For this application FumiSense ( Uniphos-251(PM)F ) the fumigation gas monitor is the right choice. This manual gives the full description of FumiSense and its operation, calibration, maintenance and other relevant information. 1.1. INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION: FumiSense is a microprocessor based instrument for the measuring the methyl bromide gas in the concentration range of 0 200 mg/l. The instrument is specially designed for monitoring the gas concentration in the fumigation silo or container. The air sample from the fumigation silo / container is brought to the sensor by means of the inbuilt air-sampling pump of the instrument. A dust filter is placed in the inlet of the gas sample line to prevent dust particles entering the instrument. Being a microprocessor based unit it has data logging facility and it can store data such as gas concentration along with the silo/ container serial number, godown number etc. with real time clock. There is also provision to download the stored data on computer or serial printer. The instrument works on inbuilt 14.8 V/ 4 Ah capacity Li-Ion rechargeable batteries. 1.2. WORKING PRINCIPLE: The FumiSense is equipped with Thermal conductivity sensor for the detection of Methyl Bromide gas. Thermal conductivity sensor: It consists of a pair of thermal conductivity detectors secured in the gas-sampling hood made up of brass. The two detectors form the two arms of a wheat stones bridge, which is balanced in clean air. An out of balance signal is generated when one of the detectors is
placed in sample air containing Methyl Bromide. This occurs due to thermal conductivity difference between clean air and air containing Methyl Bromide. The out of balance signal, which is proportional to the Methyl Bromide concentration in the sample air is digitized and displayed on the digital display of the monitor.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE DIFFERENT KEYS, KNOBS etc ON FRONT AND REAR PANEL:
The instrument has got four membrane keys viz. UP, DN, SET & ENTER, one knob, two LEDs, LCD display, Power on/off switch etc. on the front panel and pair of gas inlet/outlet ports, RS232 socket, battery charging socket, a potentiometer for MBr coarse tuning etc. on the rear panel. 3.3 LCD back light: LCD panel has the backlight provision. After initialization this back light gets switched off automatically. It can be turned on any time by pressing any one of the membrane keys., Once turned on it remains ON for about 30 seconds & then again gets turned off automatically in order to save the battery life. Whenever required user can press any of the 4 membrane keys to activate the backlight. Please note that when backlight is OFF then for any operation it is necessary to turn on the backlight by pressing any one of the four membrane keys. 3.4 MEASUREMENT MODE 1. Once you are in the measurement mode the instrument is ready for making measurement. The display shows PRESS UP KEY FOR SAMPLING. 2. When UP key is pressed, the display will show READY FOR TAKING SAMPLE ADJUST ZERO KNOB TO READ ZERO, followed by the zero gas concentration and the prompt PRESS UP KEY. 3. Before making measurement you have to zero the instrument. For this, follow the procedure given in section 3.5. 3.5. PROCEDURE FOR ZEROING THE INSTRUMENT 1. The instrument is meant for measurement of Methyl Bromide in silo. There are two sets of tubes provided, one as gas inlet tube and other as gas outlet tube. The gas outlet port of monitor should be connected to gas outlet tube(Figure-3).
2. If the sensor is exposed to target gas free clean air, the LCD should display zero reading. If the reading is not zero adjust it to zero by following the procedure mentioned below. 1.Turn COARSE ZERO knob provided on the rear panel of the instrument and adjust the reading displayed on the LCD to almost zero. 2.Then by using the FINE ZERO knob provided on the front panel of the instrument adjust the reading exactly to zero. NOTE: Usually the control knobs will be in the locked position. If they are locked, unlock them by shifting the notch provided on the control knobs to the opposite position. 3.6. PROCEDURE FOR MEASUREMENT 1. After zeroing the instrument connect the gas inlet tube to the Gas Inlet Port of the monitor ensuring no leaks (Figure-4). 2. Press the UP Key. The instrument will now start sampling. Sampling time provided is 3 minutes. At the bottom right corner of the LCD, time left for sampling will be displayed. 3. The pump will be turned on during sampling period. The pointer on the flow meter should indicate a flow rate in the range of 0.5 to 1 LPM. If not adjust the flow rate to required level using the flow control pot provided on the left side of the instrument. 4. After 3 minutes the pump & Sampling On LED will be automatically turned off. The display will now show PROCESSING ON PLEASE WAIT. After 10 seconds the display will show the gas concentration and SAMPLING OVER prompt. Note down the reading, which corresponds to the gas concentration. (This reading will be saved in the memory of the instrument provided the data logging option is ON. This data can be downloaded to the PC whenever required. Refer to Section 7 for details on data down loading.
Press UP Key to go to the measurement mode. Now the monitor is ready for another measurement. NOTE: You dont have to adjust zero after every measurement, even if the reading does not fall down to zero. This instrument has got two other modes for performing the following operations: 1. PARAMETER SETTING 2. CALIBRATION OF THE INSTRUMENT In your monitor the parameters are set already. But if you want to change any of them you have go to the PARAMETER SET MODE of the instrument.
1. Once you go to the parameter set mode the display will show the current date. 2. The cursor will also be blinking on the first digit.
