.ABOUT THIS MANUAL

This manual is one of a series that detail the use and care of the 34000 Series Multiflash Flash Point
Testers. It provides installation and operation instructions for the 34200-0 Abel Test Module on a 34000-0
Universal Base Unit with Software Version 14.05 and above installed.
This manual should be read in conjunction with the manual for the 34000-0 Universal Base Unit.
This manual is not intended to replace the appropriate Test Methods, which should be consulted to ensure
full compliance with the requirements.

CELSIUS AND FAHRENHEIT

Temperatures in this manual are shown in degrees Celsius (the factory default). The user can set the
temperature units to degrees Fahrenheit if desired.
Note: The Test Methods approximate the conversion from °C to °F, therefore ramp rates and
dipping intervals are not directly equivalent. This means that the result for a test carried
out in °C and converted mathematically to °F may be slightly different from the result if the
test was carried out in °F. The correct temperature units must be selected before the test.

EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION
The model and serial number of each Test Module is marked on an identity plate mounted on the rear of
the DIPS Pod.
The model and serial number of the Universal Base Unit is marked on an identity plate mounted on the rear
of the base unit. The power supply voltage and frequency requirements are also shown.
When Multiflash is switched on, the display will show the software version, revision and date, along with the
circuit board serial number.
The above information must be quoted in any technical query, or when ordering accessories and spare
parts.

The Universal Base Unit provides user interface, data acquisition and processing functions for the
interchangeable Test Modules. It contains the Hotplate and cooling interface for the Test Area. The DIPS
Control Cable and Igniter Power Cable are supplied with the Universal Base Unit. A glass Draught Screen
is available as an accessory
Note: The functions that are enabled are dependent upon the Test Module installed onto the
Universal Base Unit.

2.1.1. MODULE DETECTION

The Universal Base Unit automatically detects the type of Test Module fitted, and selects the relevant test
programme and calibration data. If any probes or interconnecting cables are omitted or incorrectly
connected, error messages are displayed and the programme will not continue until the problem is rectified.

2.1.2. CONTROL PANEL

The control panel comprises two buttons, a Seta Multifunctional And Rotational Test (SMART) control, and
a backlit alphanumeric / graphics display. A comprehensive menu system allows rapid setting of test
parameters. The separate calibration menu set can only be accessed during power up.

2.1.3. HEATING AND TEMPERATURE CONTROL

The Test Area is heated by a Hotplate (part of the Universal Base Unit) and / or via a bath (part of the Test
Module). Sample, bath and / or Hotplate temperatures are measured by Prt probes that are supplied with
the Test Module. The Hotplate is also equipped with an integral Prt probe.
The digital temperature controller compares the data from the Prt probes with the pre-programmed ramp
profiles and user set parameters, and adjusts the power to the Hotplate / Bath accordingly.

2.1.4. COOLING
At the end of a test, the Test Area is cooled by a fan mounted in the Universal Base Unit.
An optional Universal Cooling Module (Seta 34008-0) allows connection to an external coolant.
Note: The Universal Cooling Module is required for Abel Test Modules, as it is used to control
the liquid for the Outer Bath. It is normally shipped with the Abel Test Model.

2.1.5. UNITS OF TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT (°C / °F)

Temperatures can be displayed in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. Multiflash always measures and
controls temperatures in Celsius, and applies a conversion equation for Fahrenheit operation.

2.1.6. AUTOMATIC FLASH DETECTION

Automatic flash detection is by precision thermocouple (ionisation ring for Cleveland Open Cup). The
system is optimised to prevent false triggering near flash point temperatures due to halo effects

2.1.7. GLASS DRAUGHT SCREEN

A pivoting heat resistant glass draught screen provides a safety shield for the operator, and creates a
draught free zone around the Test Area for consistent and accurate results.

2.1.8. DATA PROCESSING AND RESULTS

An integral electronic barometer automatically corrects the flash point value in accordance with the
mandated equations that are included in all flash point Test Methods.
The test parameters and result are shown on the display and sent via the RS232 port to a printer or
personal computer (if connected). The test result includes a test number and sample identification.
The last 5 test parameters and results are stored in non-volatile memory and may be displayed on the
control panel, downloaded to a printer or computer via the RS232 port, or reloaded to set the parameters
for repeating a test.
The instrument will detect if any of the test parameters are invalid (i.e. differential between bath and sample
temperature) and display an error message.

2.2.1. TEST AREA

The Test Area comprises an Outer Bath, Inner Bath, and a Sample Cup, Lid, Stirrer, and Shutter assembly.
The Test Area is mounted onto the Universal Base Unit, on top of the Hotplate, and is secured by three
screws.
The liquid filled Outer Bath is filled via two connectors on the rear of the Outer Bath. Flexible pipes run
from the connectors to the Universal Cooling Module, situated in the Universal Base Unit. The Universal
Cooling Module allows the bath fluid to be circulated through an external cryostat for sub-ambient tests.
The Outer Bath is heated by the Hotplate on the Universal Base Unit, and is surrounded by an insulating
jacket. The liquid filled Inner Bath is heated by the Outer Bath.
The Test Area Power Cable connects an Over-temperature Cut-out (mounted on the base of the Outer
Bath) to the Universal Base Unit, and is used by the Universal Base Unit to detect whether the correct Test
Area has been installed.

2.2.2. DIPS POD

The DIPS Pod comprises a fixed lower and pivoting upper section. The lower section is attached to the
Universal Base Unit by sliding onto the Clamping Plate, and is then locked in place by the Clamping Screw.
The upper section provides mechanical actuation of the Shutter and Stirrer, and also contains the ignitor
and the dipping mechanism.
Ignitor Power and DIPS Control cables connect between sockets on the rear of the Universal Base Unit
and the plugs on the rear of the DIPS Pod. The configuration of the DIPS Control Cable Plug is used by
the Universal Base Unit to detect the type of DIPS Pod installed.
The gas supply for flame ignition connects to the rear of the DIPS Pod.

2.2.2.1. Coaxial Ignitor

The coaxial Ignitor provides electric Hotwire and / or gas ignition sources, selectable from the control panel.
For electric ignition, the Multiflash uses precision electronic control to ensure the platinum Hotwire is at a
constant temperature during dipping, and at a lower temperature in between dips to prevent premature
failure.
For gas ignition the gas supply is automatically switched on via an electrically controlled valve. The Gas
Jet is electrically ignited by the Hotwire, which then cools to a lower temperature to avoid influencing the
test result. The Hotwire is energised to a high temperature briefly before each dip to re-ignite the flame if
necessary.
The gas supply connector is mounted on the rear of the DIPS Pod. The flow of gas is adjustable via a knob
mounted on the top of the DIPS Pod.

2.2.2.2. Dipping Mechanism

The ignitor is moved up and down automatically under control of the test program, or by the operator via
the control panel during set-up. The depth of immersion of the ignitor is adjustable by a knob accessible
from the left side of the DIPS Pod.

2.2.2.3. Shutter Mechanism

The shutter mechanism on the Lid of the Sample Cup is operated by the Shutter Actuator on the front of
the DIPS Pod, under the control of the test program.
The movement can be adjusted by a knob on the right side of the DIPS Pod to ensure that the Shutter
opens fully. The timing of the Shutter is synchronised with the dipping mechanism and is not adjustable.

2.2.2.4. Stirrer
The stirrer in the lid is operated by engaging with a shaft that is driven by an electric motor in the DIPS Pod.
The speed of the motor is under control of the test program and the test parameters, via the control panel.

2.2.3. TEMPERATURE PROBES

Sample, Outer Bath, and Inner Bath temperatures are measured by Class A Platinum Resistance
Thermometer (Prt) probes. The Sample Prt is inserted through a port in the Lid and connects to a socket
on the front of the Universal Base Unit. The Outer Bath Prt is inserted through a port in the top of the Outer
Bath, and the Inner Bath Prt passes through a hole between the Sample Cup and the Outer Bath.
Only one Bath Prt is used at a time, depending upon the Test Method selected. The user must connect the
required Bath Prt to the Prt Socket No 2, on the rear of the Universal Base Unit.

2.2.4. FLASH DETECTOR

Automatic flash detection is via a precision thermocouple probe that is inserted through a port in the Lid
and connects to a socket on the front of the Universal Base Unit.

2.2.5. DRAUGHT SCREEN

Draught screens assist in obtaining consistent and accurate results. A fixed rear draught screen is
supplied attached to the lower part of the DIPS Pod.

2.3. OVERVIEW OF OPERATION

2.3.1. DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
The Outer Bath and Inner Bath are filled with either water or 50/50 Ethylene Glycol/Water mixture. The
Sample Cup is placed into the Inner Bath, and the Lid and Shutter Assembly is placed on top of the Sample
Cup.

For IP 170 tests:

The Outer Bath Prt is connected to Prt Socket No.2 on the rear of the Universal Base Unit.
The DIPS Pod is pivoted down into mechanical contact with the Shutter and the Stirrer is engaged with the
Stirrer Drive Shaft. The Ignitor height and dipping/shutter operation is checked / adjusted. The DIPS Pod
is then pivoted up again and the Sample Cup is removed from the Test Area.
Test parameters are either recalled from one of the last five test results (stored in non volatile memory) or
are entered via the control panel. Multiflash stores this information in its active memory along with a unique
test identity number generated by Multiflash.
Sample is placed in the Sample Cup, and the Sample Cup and Lid are placed in the Test area. The DIPS
Pod is then pivoted down into the Test Area.
The Sample Prt is connected to Prt Socket No.1 on the front of the Universal Base unit.
The initial test sequence is started from the main menu. The error messaging system will advise if any
probe or cable is disconnected. Multiflash will prompt the user to enter a sample identity, which is
automatically appended to the test identity number, and the Bath will start to heat up to the first dip
temperature.
Before power is applied to the heating system, the Hotwire is energised and a pre-test dip is carried out to
ensure that the flash point of the sample is not below the current sample temperature. If a flash is detected
the test will end automatically. If no flash is detected, power will be applied to the heating system.
After a pre-determined period of time, Multiflash checks that the Sample Prt has measured an increase in
temperature. If the Sample Prt has not detected a temperature rise, power to the heating system will be
switched off and the test will be stopped on the assumption that the Sample Prt is not immersed in the
sample. If a rise in sample temperature has been detected the Bath will continue to be heated in
accordance with the test parameters and the Test Method selected.
At temperature intervals pre-determined by the Test Method and the test parameters, the shutter will open,
the ignitor will briefly dip into the aperture, and then the shutter will close.
If wire ignition has been selected, the Hotwire on the Ignitor will heat to a soak temperature shortly before
the first dip takes place. The temperature of the Hotwire will increase to a higher temperature for the
duration of each dip sequence, then return to the soak temperature after the dip has taken place.

Rev 5.0 14
29 Jan 2014
Pubn No: 34200H0E

If flame ignition has been selected, the gas valve will open and the Hotwire will heat up to ignite the gas
flame shortly before the first dip. The Hotwire will then cool to a soak temperature during dipping. Just
before each subsequent dip, the Hotwire will briefly heat up again to re-ignite the gas flame in the event of
the flame having been blown out.
If a flash is detected the test will stop, otherwise the heating/dipping cycle will continue until a flash is
detected, the upper limit of the test range is reached, or the test ends. The status of the test sequence is
continuously monitored, and any problems or error conditions are shown on the display.

For IP 1523 tests:

The Inner Bath Prt is connected to Prt Socket No.2.
At the first dip temperature an audible warning and a screen message will prompt the user to place sample
into the Sample Cup and fit the lid.
The Sample Prt is connected to Prt Socket No.1 on the front of the Universal Base unit.
The DIPS Pod is pivoted down. The action of pivoting the DIPS Pod down starts the program that controls
the ramping and dipping functions.
A countdown will be displayed while the sample and Bath temperatures stabilise.
After a pre-determined period of time, Multiflash checks that the Bath Prt has measured an increase in
temperature. If the Bath Prt has not detected a temperature rise, power to the heating system will be
switched off and the test will be stopped on the assumption that the Bath is empty. If a rise in bath
temperature has been detected the Bath will continue to be heated in accordance with the test parameters
and the Test Method selected.

2.3.2. RESULTS
On completion of a test, or if a test is aborted, the display will show the test result, including a corrected
value in accordance with the mandated equation using data from the integral electronic barometer. If a
Setalert radio paging system is connected, an audible and visual alarm will be triggered on the receiver.
The result and key test parameters will be shown on the display. At the same time, the information will also
be written to the non-volatile memory, and also sent to the RS232 port for downloading to a printer or
computer.
The results for any of the last five tests can be recalled or printed, and the relevant test parameters can be
reloaded into the Multiflash memory ready for the next test.

5.1. DESCRIPTION
1) The user interface for Multiflash is the Control Panel, comprising a 20 character x 5-line display,
two push buttons and a rotary SMART (Seta Multifunctional And Rotational Test) control.
2) The display provides two types of information;
a) Menus allow access to control functions, user options and parameter ranges.
b) Screens show instructions, information, and error messages.
3) The menus and screens are navigated by the push buttons and the SMART control;
a) The SMART control used on its own scrolls through the available options on the menu.
b) The current option is indicated by a graphic to the left of the function title.

c) If the graphic is a , pressing the right hand button will select that option.
d) If the graphic is a , pressing and holding the left hand button will enable the SMART control
to be used to set or change that parameter.
4) Menus and screens contain the following types of data;
a) Command: Initiates an operation, function, or new menu or screen. Example:- Run Test.
b) Data Input: Values and parameters to be entered by the user. Example:- Expected flash
point.
c) Information: Values and measurements. Example:- Bath Temp. 25.5°C.
d) Instruction: Actions the operator must complete before proceeding with the next command.
Example:- Add Sample.
e) Status: The current status of the test. Example:- Dipping.
f) Text: Titles, explanatory text, and blank lines. Example:- Multiflash.
5) The content of menus and screens is dependent on the Test Module fitted. The Universal Base
Unit detects the type of module installed, and launches the relevant programme.
6) A separate menu system provides calibration access (Section 8 refers).

5.2. TEMPERATURE UNITS (°C /°F)

1) The temperature units (°C /°F) are selected in the ALTER PARAMETERS menu.
2) Once selected, all menus/screens and results will use those temperature units.
3) If a test result is recalled and loaded, the temperature units will revert to those used in that test.

a) Use a paper tissue to clean the taper on the end of the Dip Arm.
b) Use a cotton bud to clean any carbon deposits from the taper inside the Igniter. Make sure that
no debris is left on the small insulator that lies between the Igniter Body and the Gas Jet.
3) Check for a broken Hotwire:
a) Visually look for a break in the wire of the Hotwire.
b) Check that the resistance between the Gas jet and the Igniter Body is approximately 0Ω.
4) Re-fit the Igniter to the Dip Arm.
CAUTION: DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE LOCKING RING
5) Check the operation as detailed in Section 6.3.

12.3.4. IGNITER PARAMETERS

CAUTION: DO NOT ADJUST THE IGNITER PARAMETERS WITHOUT FIRST CONTACTING THE
STANHOPE-SETA TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT. INCORRECT ADJUSTMENT MAY
EFFECT THE QUALITY OF RESULTS OBTAINED, AND CAN REDUCE THE LIFESPAN
OF THE IGNITER.
1) The Igniter parameters control the power delivered to the Igniter, and therefore the temperature of
the Hotwire.
2) There are four separate power levels;
a) Wire High: - The Hotwire temperature is between 1250 and 1350°C, sufficient to cause a flash
at the sample’s Flash Point.
b) Wire Low: - The Hotwire is held at a temperature that allows rapid heating to the Wire High
temperature.
c) Gas High: - The Hotwire is heated to a temperature sufficient to ensure that the gas flame will
ignite / re-ignite.
d) Gas Low: - The Hotwire is held at a temperature that allows rapid heating to the Gas High
temperature.
3) Each Test Module type (ie Pensky-Artens, Cleveland Open Cup, etc) has a separate set of igniter
parameters. The correct set of parameters are selected when the Test Module is installed.
Note: Adjusting the igniter parameters will only change the igniter parameters for the Test
Module type currently fitted (i.e. Pensky-Martens, Cleveland etc). The igniter parameters
will remain unchanged for any of the other Test Module types.
4) The levels are factory pre-set, and are noted on the INSTRUMENT DATA SHEET in Appendix A of
the Universal Base Unit manual in case the settings are ‘lost’ on the instrument.
5) If the Igniter appears to be malfunctioning, and sections 12.3.1. to 12.3.3. do not rectify the problem,
the user is advised to contact the Technical Department at Stanhope-Seta before making any
adjustments to the settings.
