About CSIR NET Exam

■ Council of Scientific & Industrial

Research (CSIR), India, is a publicly
funded R&D organisation. It provides
funds, grants and scholarships for various
scientific projects in India.

■ CSIR-UGC NET is a joint test conducted to determine the

eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) & for
Lectureship/ Assistant Professor in India.

■ The CSIR NET exam is Conducted by the National Testing

Agency (NTA) for candidates aspiring to make a career in the
Research field as Junior Research fellow (JRF) or Lectureship/
Assistant Professorship in Indian Universities and Colleges

■ Frequency – Conducted twice a year in June & December

■ Mode of exam – Online

■ Medium of paper – Hindi and English

■ Duration – 3 hrs

■ Total Marks – 200

CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria
A candidate who is currently studying in the final year of educational degree
program OR has already completed any government approved educational
degree is eligible for appearing in the CSIR NET exam.

Subject-wise Qualification
Life Science - M.Sc./BS/B-Tech or any other equivalent qualification in Life
Science on any other related subject only

Chemical Science - M.Sc./BS/B-Tech/B-Pharma degree or any other equivalent

qualification in Chemistry

Physical Science - M.Sc. in Physics or BS-MS in Physical Science or any other

equivalent degree

Mathematical Science - M.Sc./BS-MS/BS-4 Years/B-Tech degree or any other

equivalent qualification in the Mathematics field

Earth Science - BS-MS/M.Sc./BS- 4 Years or any equivalent degree in

Earth Science

Age Limit The upper age limit is:

 Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) - 28
 Lectureship/Assistant Professorship
- No Upper Age Limit

Age Relaxation For OBC - 3 Years

For SC/ ST/ PwD/ Female Candidate - 5 Years

Nationality The candidate must be an Indian National

Advantages of CSIR NET
1. SPM Fellowship
CSIR has instituted a special Fellowship, namely, "Dr Shyama Prasad
Mukherjee (SPM) Fellowship" open to toppers of CSIR-UGC JRF (NET)
awardees. It will be awarded through interview mode only. It provides
special fellowship for pursuing PhD programmes within IITs, NITs, IISC, CSIR
Labs, other specialised R&D institutions, and central and state universities.
This fellowship provides a stipend of Rs. 36000/- with HRA per month
during the first two years.

2. Junior Research fellowship (JRF)

JRF enables the candidate to pursue PhD through many institutes with a
stipend of 31,000/ p.m. for the first two years followed by Senior Research
Fellowship (SRF) and the stipend will be increased to Rs. 35,000/- p.m.

3. National Eligibility Test (NET)

NET is the minimum eligibility criteria for lectureship in all universities.

4. Preference
Preference is given to PhD holders while applying for Faculty/Research
positions in educational institutes and most of the R&D centres and CSIR
Labs.

5. Lucrative Stipend/Scholarship:
Awarded for a period of 5 years. For two years, Junior Research Fellow (JRF
Scholarship) is awarded and for the next three years, Senior Research
Fellow (SRF scholarship) is awarded.

6. Opportunity

CSIR NET Exam Pattern
The question paper consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) which is a
single paper test distributed into 3 parts: Part A, B & C.

Part A: This part involves questions from General Aptitude -

Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, General Science. (Level of
questions - Easy to Moderate)

Part A is same for all

Part B and Part C are subject specific

For Eg. if you are appearing for Life Science subject, Part B and
Part C of exam will come from Life Science syllabus.

Part B: Involves general subject-based questions from the CSIR NET

syllabus. (Level of questions - Easy to Moderate)

Part C: This part contains analytical questions based on the application

of the theoretical concepts. (Level of questions - Difficult)
