1.Introduction
Medical Imaging Technology encompasses a variety of advanced imaging modalities
that are used in medical diagnosis and intervention procedures. The bachelor degree
in medical imaging technology offered by SMU is designed to provide medical
imaging technologist with the added theoretical knowledge and clinical skill needed to
perform procedures in x-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, computer
tomography and intervention angiography. Medical imaging technologists operate X-
ray and other imaging equipment to produce radiographs (X-ray films) and other
images which are used in the diagnosis and subsequent management of disease or
injury. Radiologic technologists are referred to as radiographers. Graduates will be
able to comfortably establish and manage Imaging services. They will also be able to
join postgraduate courses in related disciplines.

The BMIT students have to undergo practical training and mandatory examination
for BD0038(2nd semester),BD0043(3rd semester),BD0047(4th Semester),BD0051 &
BD0052(5th Semester)BD0053,BD0054 & BD0055(6th Semester)apart from project
work and internship. It is the responsibility of the learning center to provide theses
practical training.

2.Objectives

3
The students, after completion of all the practicals in Bachelor of Science in Medical
Imaging Technology (B.Sc. MIT), will be professionally qualified to:

1. Acquire and develop theoretical and clinical skills within central spheres of
radiography, qualifying them to practise radiography independently, ethically and
flexibly in accordance with technological, scientific, organisational and social
development both nationally and internationally.
2. Acquire and develop professional and personal skills as a prerequisite for
independent management of radiographic procedures and as a prerequisite for
cooperation with other professional groups.
3. Acquire and develop critical, analytic and reflective skills for the purpose of being
able to describe, formulate, analyse and treat problems for the benefit of the
profession, the workplace and the individual.
4. Engage in cooperation with the patient, relatives, colleagues and other professional
groups irrespective of their cultural or language backgrounds.
5. Initiate and enter into work-related relations where research and development
activities are undertaken.
6. Pursue theoretical and clinical qualifying higher education upon completing the
basic clinical & technical radiography and other imaging practicals..

3.Assessment pattern for practical subjects

The log book prepared by the students should be evaluated by the external examiner and
can be given maximum of 5 marks irrespective of the credits.

The marks given to practical subjects are described below.

5.Role of the Learning Centre for Practical

Sessions

1. Practical training would be conducted by the learning centers. The various practical
training pertaining to the Medical Imaging Technology with respect to the Subject will

6
be provided by the university and the same information can be obtained from the
website.
2. During the practical training period the log book should be strictly maintained and
should produce to the University when ever required.
3. As the students are undergoing practical training in ionizing radiation and other
imaging modalities it is highly recommended that the learning center should take at
most care in providing the radiation safety parameters and should maintain the
personnel monitoring data as per the guidelines of AERB or the regulatory body for
their state.
4. Students will be posted in the various departments/areas of the hospital as directed
by the university. It is mandatory for a student to spend prescribed minimum number of
hours at these areas /departments of the hospitals.
5. The list of experiments/exercises sent by the university should be carried out by the
student when they are posted in the various departments of the hospital and report of
the same should be written in the logbook. All the day to day activities should be
recorded in the log book. A record of practical work must be maintained in the
prescribed format supplied by the University. All the practical work carried out by the
students must be supervised by the concerned Learning Center faculty regularly and
duly certified by them. The logbook so certified by the study Center faculty must be
submitted for verification and approval by University Examiners at the time of the
Semester end practical examination.
6. Up to a maximum of 5 marks will be awarded for the practical work carried out by the
students as recorded and certified in their logbooks. These five marks will be a part of
their Semester end practical exam marks. The External Examiner, prior to the
commencement of Semester end practical exams, will examine the logbook. Students
will be allowed to appear for the Semester end practical exam only if their logbook is
found satisfactory.
7. The 5 marks short note questions of descriptive method will be provided by the COE
to the learning centers during the time of practical examinations of subjects BD0038,
BD0051, BD0053 & BD0054. Students have to submit their answer sheet to the
external examiners for evaluation and the marks obtained in this category have to be
entered in to the practical marks statement form at the appropriate column.
8. The learning center is responsible for internal assessment. The center should make
sure that the student is successfully completing at least 80% of the practicals given by

7
the university. Internal assessment of the practicals can be arrived by conducting
some model practical examination and also through the internal evaluation of the log
book submitted by the student.
9. The university practicals examinations will be conducted in selected learning centers .

9. Conduct of Practical Examinations

Semester-end Practical exams are conducted only at selected centers. External examiners
appointed by the University, will conduct practical examination in the respective subject. An
internal examiner from the center will assist the External Examiner in organizing the practical
examinations.

Students have to come with the log book for the examination. Failing which, the marks
allotted for the log book is lost. Log book should be the original work of the student. If any
malpractice is noted by the External Examiner, he/she has the right to reject the log book
and not allot marks for the same.

Based on the number of students appearing for the practical exams, students may be
divided into batches of approximately 15. Students have to contact the practical examination
center for the exact time table
