This discussion will cover two parts in Understanding the Self, first is the Leadership like what are

the
character of being a good leader and what are the hindrances of being a good leader, secondly is the
Filipino traits and values, and I will be explaining it on the side of psychology, so we will try to redefine it.

Why is it easy for some people to convince others to follow them?

- Because they are equipped with skills with being a leader

Why is it easy for some people to get convinced?

- According to psychology is the level of agreeableness. Filipinos are more likely agreeable rather
disagreeing because we value relationships. We sometimes tend to agree nalang and be quiet
nalang.

Would a person’s trait and values impact his political self?

- Yes, like for an Asian country who value more of our culture, we do things to others as a
reflection of values and traits like the pakikisama, pagrespeto o paggalang sa ibang tao, atbp.

2 types of motives of social influence: (followers)

Value conformity- do things to fit ourselves to others

Normative Influence – based on conforming to positive expectation of others, helps avoid

punishment.

- Conform means acting innocent to prevent yourself from being involved to situation. Like for
example introvert person who tends to keep themselves to be quiet so that makaiwas sa mga
sitwasyong maaring makapaglagay sa kanila sa alanganin. But let me clear na kapag introvert ka
is di ka na pwede maging leader ha kasi una sa lahat as an introvert you giving yourself a time
alone to think more wisely so that whatever you will do is magiging productive or reasonable
yung ginagawa mo.

Informational Influence – based on accepting the information obtained from others as evidence of
reality.

- In here you are doing something not to please others but you are doing it because there is an
evidence that shows that you will have a benefit in doing so or in following it.
- Example in wearing facemask or faceshields you are doing it because you are not just following
what the DOH or the government say but because you know that you will get something good in
obeying it.

Now try to think about yourself. Kapag kayo ba ay nasa classroom what usual behavior do you do.
Tahimik or behave ba kayo dahil ayaw niyong madamay sa gulo ng klase kasi umiiwas kayo na
maparusahan or dahil naniniwala kayo na sa school ay may rules na kailangan sundin at kapag
sinunod mo yun something good will happen to you.

Leadership - the process by which certain group members motivate and guide the group.
Theories of leadership

In here I want you to have a self rellection if you have such qualities or characteristics of a leader

David McClelland believed that we have three pshychological needs:

Need of power (nPow) –

Neef for affiliation (NAff) – desire to please others, desire to be liked by others

Need of achievement (nAch) – to be competitive

What is David McClelland tells us here… he said that in order for a person to be a leader you should
have high Need of power and low need of affiliation.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEADER

1. INSTRUMENTAL – leaders who plan and organizes for their subordinates

2. SUPPORTIVE – leaders shows concern to their subordinates
3. PARTICIPATIVE – leaders who allow subordinates to participate in decision making.
4. Achievement-oriented – sets challenges and rewards achievement

FILIPINO VALUES REDEFINED BY THE PSYCHOLOGY FIELD

Do you know why Filipinos do not like to sit in front or near the stage during events?

- I usually observe this on class my front seats are always vacant, but did you know that we were
actually influenced by the Spaniards because during the colonical civilization, Filipinos sit at the
back because the most influential or VIP person sits at the front
-

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FOLLOWING VALUES:

FILIPINO TIME

CRAB MENTALITY – when is on the top we intend to pull that person down

COLONIAL MENTALITY- believing that the colonial or other culture is better than us.

Rethinking Filipino Values ( in a positive way)

Hiya is not the same with “shame” or “guilt” bur rather it is a send of propriety.

Bahala na is not fatalism(giving up) but it is risk-taking and determination.

Utang na loob is not a debt or burden; but it is gratitude and solidarity.

Pakikipagkapwa – the core value of Filipino
