DETERMINATION OF WATER OF CRYSTALLISATION IN FeSO4•xH2O

INTRODUCTION:
The aim of this experiment is to find the value of x in the hydrated salt, FeSO4•xH2O, using
two methods – gravimetric analysis and a redox titration. The accuracy of the two
methods is to be evaluated at the end of the experiment.

BACKGROUND:
1. Write the relevant half-equations for the reaction occurring in the redox titration and
thus the overall equation for the reaction.

2. Predict which of the two methods will be more accurate in determining the value of
x in the hydrated iron(II) sulfate.

ASSESSMENT:

Based on the procedure, identify any hazards associated with the experiment.
State how these hazards can be reduced.

Method II – Redox Titration
1. Pipette 25.0 cm3 of the solution of iron(II) sulphate into a conical flask and add
approximately 10.0 cm3 of the 2 mol dm-3 H2SO4(aq) (OR 20.0 cm3 of the 1 mol dm-3 H2SO4(aq) )
solution provided.
2. Titrate the acidified Fe2+(aq) solution with 0.0100 mol dm-3 potassium permanganate,

KMnO4(aq).
3. Repeat the titration until concordant results are obtained.

Method II – Redox Titration

ANALYSIS:
− Use your results to calculate the value of x in the hydrated iron(II) sulfate.
− The expected value for x is 7.
− Assess the accuracy of your answer based on the expected value.
DISCUSSION:
Questions to guide the discussion and conclusion:
● What could have caused the value you calculated in each method to differ from the expected value?
● What assumptions did you make in your analysis?
● Which method was better to determine the value of x?
Justify your answer with data.
