LET US START

WHAT IS
IMPROMPTU SPEECH?
Impromptu speeches are delivered
with little or no time for preparation. In
most instances, you are called to speak
at the spur of the moment because you
are expected to be knowledgeable
about the subject.
EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE #1
your teacher assigned you to read an article before the
class starts. Then, during the class you were asked to
deliver an impromptu speech about what you have
learned from the article.

EXAMPLE #2
when you are campaigning for a position in school and
you are asked by your fellow students to respond to
their questions.
STRATEGIES IN
ORGANIZING AND
DELIVERING AN
IMPROMPTU
SPEECH
1. PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
This is the structure in which you can take any topic
and discuss it in three moves. The first move is a
discussion of the past. You take a step back and sketch
a narrative about what used to be, the conditions and
the situations that came before. This is easy to do
because for every topic, there is a past. The next is the
present where you paint a picture of what is. You can
literally look around you to make this move. Then finally,
you talk about the future you envision.
2. POINT-REASON-EXAMPLE
Start by a short description of the topic.
Follow this with the ideal impact you desire and
finally the outcome you wish to achieve through
communication. Then continue the opening of
what you want to say by asserting a point. In the
body of the topic, you outline reasons for stating
this point and illustrate with examples. Your
conclusion restates the position you first made
3. OPENING, RULE OF THREE, CLINCHER
You begin by stating your main
topic or opening. Then, to support
your topic, apply the rule of three by
using the ordinal adverbs (first,
second, and third). Finally, state your
topic's clincher, vision, or conclusion.
OTHER
STRATEGIES

IN ORGANIZING AND
DELIVERING AN
IMPROMPTU SPEECH
1. BRIDGING

this entails building a

connection between what
you do know and what you
do not know.
2. REFRAMING
rephrasing or redefining the topic

into something that you want to

talk about. This usually occurs if
you think the topic is inappropriate
or it is not meant for you.
3. PLAYING DEVIL’S ADVOCATE

this refers to you

standing on the
opposite side.
TIPS
IN DELIVERING AN IMPROMPTU SPEECH

TIP #1
Once you are requested to say something, pause

for a moment to plan in your head what to say.

TIP #2
State your main point briefly and deliver it at a

pace your audience can follow

TIP #3
End by saying thank you.
