B. Conceptualizing a Possible GMO

Score: 20 points

1. What is your GMO’s modified characteristic/s and feature/s? (5pts)

GMO cotton is a transgenic insect-resistant crop designed to combat pests like bollworms. This GMO was
produced by genetically modifying the cotton genome to express a Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Bt is a
harmless, naturally occurring bacteria that destroy specific insect pests. Even the USDA Organic program
permits its use as an herbicide in organic agriculture.

2. What is your proposed GMO’s impact to society? (5pts)

Cotton impacts our society, not just society but also our environment, because it is one of the items that
make our necessities, just as towels, clothes, cleaning wounds, and many other medical uses. Cotton is a
high demand, and farmers had to plant more of these crops because they saw the potential market for this
plant. However, many pesticides can damage the cause of the three different worms, so scientists came up
with a solution found in 1996. It was called BT( Bacillus Thurningienosis) cotton, but scientists came up
with another solution that will make a plant much more productive than the pesticide damage. It will not
help the farmer but will big help them have more harvest and less production cost. So, the proposal of this
is that cotton has an impact on our society, not just because we need it every day. However, it is easy to
plant, and it will last even rain or shine; if the more we plant this, the people and farmers have a stable
income and a lower price that people can buy good quality.

3. What issues and concern may arise as a result of your proposed GMO? (5pts)
They speak negatively about GMOs. Many people are against GMOs. Well, there is no significant effect
on the environment, the health of animals, and the people, so it is a big step towards advancing and
developing our country. This game is beneficial to a farmer and especially when farmers want to make new
techniques and modify some plants. Moreover, GMO cotton also allows cotton to be more environmentally
friendly, making it a tremendous success for farmers, consumers, and the environment, so for us GMOs; it
is a significant impact in a way that people can benefit the farmer as well.
