    My mother returned home
    snortly afterwards. “Who has
    thrown away all the starch that I
    had prepared for my cotton sa-
    rees?”, she exclaimed. Suddenly
    I realised that the “delicacy” I
    had consumed as kheer was in
    fact the maida-starch mixture
    that my mother had prepared to
    use on her cotton sarees.
    I sheepishly confessed to my
    mother and she had a hearty
    laugh.To this day whenever any
    one mentions “kheer” I imme¬
    diately recall the incident.
