Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Company (“UPCIC”) is committed to maintaining the
health and safety of our UPCIC community, including our workforce, our policyholders and the
many neighborhoods in which we operate. As we respond to concerns regarding the spread of
COVID-19, our goal is to continue adjusting claims in a prompt and fair manner while following
recommended practices for minimizing risks associated with COVID-19.
In connection with your insurance claim, you have authorized an adjuster representing UPCIC to
visit and inspect your insured property. It is important to recognize there are inherent elevated
risks (including risks of illness or death) associated with conducting business during this time
including the onsite adjusting of insurance claims. Although we attempt to reduce these risks
and ask our policyholders to do the same, both you and we recognize it is not possible to
eliminate or avoid all risks.
We have asked our adjusters to take certain precautions when visiting policyholders’ properties.
These precautions include not working if:
• they or anyone with whom they have been in close contact have tested positive for
COVID-19 or are awaiting test results;
• they exhibit symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, cough, fatigue or exhaustion;
• they have been advised by a health official to quarantine due to concerns related to
COVID-19; or
• they otherwise believe health risks exist suggesting they should not visit insured
properties.
We also have asked our adjusters to follow current guidelines and recommendations such as
frequent hand washing and sanitizing, maintaining safe social distances to the extent possible,
and conducting inspections as efficiently and expeditiously as possible to minimize contact. We
likewise ask our policyholders to assist in this regard by helping to maintain appropriate
distances and/or wearing protective masks or similar coverings.
Likewise, for the benefit our adjusters and the other policyholders they see, we ask our
policyholders to not schedule onsite inspections, or to cancel and reschedule any previously
scheduled inspections, if:
• they or anyone at the insured property has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been in
close contact with anyone who has tested positive;
• they or anyone with whom they have been in close contact is awaiting COVID-19 test
results;
• they exhibit symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, cough, fatigue or exhaustion;
• they have been advised by a health official to quarantine due to concerns related to
COVID-19; or
• they otherwise believe health risks exist suggesting they should not have visitors at their
properties.
If any of the foregoing circumstances exist, you must contact us immediately so we can
reschedule the inspection and/or use other methods to evaluate the loss such as photos or videos.
Similarly, at the start of the scheduled visit, our adjuster will ask you to confirm these
representations to ensure everyone’s personal safety.
We have asked our adjusters to cancel, reschedule or discontinue the inspections at any point
prior to or during the inspections if they are not comfortable with the health risks presented. In
the same way, you are encouraged to cancel, reschedule or discontinue an inspection at any time
prior to or during the inspection that you are not comfortable with the health risks presented.
While we are taking every precaution, we are mindful of the fact that COVID-19 is widespread
in some areas. As a result, there is always a risk that either you or our employee(s) could later
test positive for the virus. In either of those cases, contact tracing is needed in order to notify
individuals and help our communities contain the spread. The current CDC guidelines for
COVID-19 define a “close contact” as any individual who was within 6 feet of an infected
person for at least 15 minutes, starting from 48 hours before symptom onset. Thus, if we are
informed that one of our employees has tested positive and that you were in “close contact” with
the employee, we will make efforts to notify you of that development so that you can take
appropriate actions. Similarly, if you learn of someone who has tested positive and you know
that one of our employees was in “close contact” with the person, we ask that you promptly
notify us so that we may advise the employee to quarantine and follow CDC protocols for
monitoring the potential exposure. Please understand that Universal is not responsible for any
expense associated with COVID-19, contact tracing or any notification, including any expense
for testing, disinfection or other measures.
We are making every effort during this time to continue adjusting claims in a prompt and fair
manner while prioritizing the health of our policyholders, adjusters, employees and the
communities they serve. We need your participation in that process and we appreciate your
patience as we work to resolve these matters in a constantly evolving environment.
Please contact us a 954-958-1200 if you have any questions about your claim.
