Materials
1 pc. improvised coffee cup calorimeter (visit: https://youtu.be/xizMoB6sZ7Y )
1 pc. 250 mL or 500 mL beaker
1 pc. 50 mL or 100 mL graduated cylinder

Chemicals and Consumables


Sodium hydroxide
Hydrochloric acid

SAFETY!
1. HYDROCHLORIC ACID IS CORROSIVE AND SODIUM HYDROXIDE CAN CAUSE SKIN ITCHINESS AND
DRYNESS! Avoid skin contact with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid! In case of contact, wash
with plenty of water immediately.

2. Acid to water not water to acid!

Procedure

1. Starting from “run 1”, prepare the designated sodium hydroxide concentration to your group (see table
below). Make sure to prepare the solution in the beaker that will be used in the improvised calorimeter.

2. Place the beaker containing the prepared sodium hydroxide solution inside the improvised calorimeter.

3. Transfer the designated volume of hydrochloric acid in a separate beaker (see table below). You may
use a graduated cylinder for a more accurate measurement.

4. Measure the temperature of the sodium hydroxide solution inside the improvised calorimeter. Record
the temperature as T1 (0C).

5. Transfer slowly the hydrochloric acid from the separate beaker to the beaker inside the improvised
calorimeter. Close the lid immediately.

6. Using the stirrer of the improvised calorimeter, mix the solution well inside.

7. After mixing for a few seconds using the stirrer of the improvised calorimeter, wait for some time for
the temperature reading in the thermometer of the improvised calorimeter to be stable.

8. Once temperature is stable, record the reading as T2 (0C).

9. Compute for the heat of neutralization. Write your calculations in the space provided in this manual.

10. Empty contents of the improvised calorimeter. Wash thoroughly the beaker, the stirrer, and
thermometer. Repeat for run 2.
