Literature Review 3: Teaching with Respect by Stephen Sieck
Lawrence University. Sieck’s present research focuses on effective pedagogy for choral
Practices, and asks deeper questions about the language used by teachers as it relates to
the identities of the students we are serving while providing a direct link to the choral
classroom. Sieck’s text will be used in my research to discuss the necessity of creating an
inclusive classroom that is welcoming and serves all students regardless of their
background or identity.
Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) as the process through which all young people
and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy
identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show
empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible
and caring decisions. Sieck provides many applications and approaches to SEL as it
applies to the music education classroom throughout his book. By cultivating a classroom
with a focus on SEL, Sieck indicates how we can create an environment of Inclusive
Teaching Practices (ITP) throughout all levels of education with specific application to
