modern engineering tools, with an understanding of their limitations.
Synopsis: Students will be exposed to basic diagnostics techniques and methods used in
identifying the failure of the machinery system. Fault tree analysis method is
important for the purpose of monitoring data for maintenance of a machine system
as well. This course will also discuss the diagnostics data processing and
distribution of statistical diagnostics for smooth management of maintenance work.

1.0 THEORY

Vibration is considered the best operating parameter to judge dynamic conditions such as are balance,
ball bearing defects, lubrication and other then that It is the perfect tool for trending overall vibration
readings in process equipment such as: Rolling element bearing, Motors AC/DC, Pumps, Gearboxes,
Compressors, and Fans. Vibration meter used for measures vibration levels in industrial machinery.
Misalignment, poor balancing, structural compromises, and other factors can cause unwanted vibration
increases. Vibration meter has a frequency sensitivity that meets ISO-2954 and offers Displacement,
velocity and acceleration features. This meter is shipped fully tested and calibrated and, with proper
use, will provide years of reliable service.

Objectives
The main objectives of this experiment is to learn how to use misalignment tools and learn about the
misalignment that occur between shafts. In this experiment, there are three objectives that should be
completed after the experiment be done.
The objectives are lists below:-
1. To study how to using vibration meter that use in shaft alignment.
2. To analyse the vibration of the pump
3. To use laser alignment tools
4. To detect the misalignment on the shaft.
5. To calibrate the alignment between shaft at the motor and shaft at pump

2.1 Laser Alignment tools

Both horizontal and vertical coupling and foot results are automatically calculated. The large display
shows the machine feet to be moved, the direction and the correction value. During the alignment
correction, ALIGNEO® monitors and displays the live move.

ALIGNEO®, like all PRÜFTECHNIK Alignment Systems laser-optical measurement instruments, has
an ergonomic design. The operating keys are conveniently positioned allowing jobs to be carried out
under extreme conditions. The secret behind the intuitive user guidance in ALIGNEO® lies in the
simple 3-blue-key operation:
1. Enter dimensions,
2. Measure,
3. Display results. Uncomplicated and easy to use.

1. Probe connector
2. RS-232 Connector
3. LCD Display
4. Function switches and pushbuttons

7. Protective rubber meter jacket

3.0 PROCEDURES/ METHODOLOGY
3.1 Measurement before alignment using vibration meter
a) The motor-pump is switched on
b) Make sure vibration meter is on
c) The sensor is placed to 4 point to the machine (Figure 3.1). Measurements of the vibration
before alignment is recorded.
d) switch off motor-pump
e) Perform alignment reading by FLUKE laser alignment tool. Read carefully the user manual
and the SOP of FLUKE laser alignment tool.

Figure 3.1: Sensor location

3.2 Shaft Adjustment

a) A wire brush was used for cleaning shims (Figure 3.2) and baseplates. Make sure that shims
are clean of all rust and debris, especially if existing shims are reused.

Figure 3.2: Shims

b) Make sure any dirt and debris is cleaned from under the foot-we always want good metal to
metal contact, baseplate to shim to machine foot.
c) Before starting, gross soft foot were checked. All of the bolts at the motor feet and check were
loosened for any obvious rocking of the machine. This needs to be corrected with shims and
can be done with a feeler gauge.
d) The shim packs were cleaned and only use three to four shims under each foot depend on the
measurement that appear on the screen. Example figure 3.3

Figure 3.3: Soft foot measurement

e) Start any soft foot measurement with all of the bolts securely tightened. As we go through the
different methods, keep in mind that the industry standard for the maximum soft foot
measurement is 0.25 mm.

3.4 Measurement after alignment using vibration meter

Repeat the procedure 3.1 (Measurement before alignment using vibration meter) and record the
vibration.

4.0 RESULTS
Record the measurements of vibrations before and after the alignment.
