Nationals toughened safety glass is produced to the requirements of AS2208 (Architectural) and AS2080 (Automotive). Toughened glass is produced by heating annealed glass in a furnace to approximately 700C and then rapidly blowing cool air onto both surfaces. This rapid cooling process is the key element in the physical changes in annealed glass that creates toughened glass.

toughened safety glass is a Grade A safety glass as per AS1288; up to 500% stronger than annealed glass and therefore is more resistant to thermal breakage and can withstand greater windloads; on breaking it fragments into many small harmless pieces unlike annealed glass; can be used within a temperature range of minus 70C to plus 300C (surface temperature should not exceed 250C if other surface is lower than 0C ambient); standard arrissed edge makes handling easier; ease of matching tinted toughened and tinted annealed glass; plastic wrapped to avoid scratches during delivery or on site; recommended for door, side and low lites, frameless entries, balustrades, shower, bath screen panels and furniture; flat automotive toughened and marine toughened is available in 3 8mm thicknesses. Other thicknesses are available on request; available in thicknessess 3 25mm.
toughened glass cannot be drilled or edgeworked in any manner. SANDBLASTING OR OTHER SURFACE TREATMENTS SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT PRIOR TO TOUGHENING as per AS1288 1994. Deep SANDBLASTED patterns greater than 1mm are not permissible; toughened glass ordered to TEMPLATES must be accompanied with a full scale template made to the correct dimensions. These must be made from a RIGID MATERIAL. Orders submitted with complex drawings and sizes to avoid template construction will either be rejected or executed at the customers risk; minimum edgework finish on toughened glass up to 12mm is a standard arrissed edge. Minimum edgework on GREATER THICKNESSES should be a flat ground edge; slight distortion or BOWING may occur after toughening but is largely controllable. It will vary with substance, tint, surface treatment, size and shape of the glass. Ceramic painted, sandblasted or reflective coated glass has a greater TENDENCY TO BOW and special tolerances would be advised. Flatness will be measured when the glass is standing on edge with a straight edge placed along the full length of the panel and a WEDGE MEASUREMENT taken at the centre position. Refer to our technical department for more information; the ROLLER MOTION process during the furnacing of glass panels can produce slight corrugated distortion or roller waves. This visual effect is in the form of distortion bands 250 300mm apart. It is most noticeable in reflective toughened glass and should be glazed horizontally; NOT RECOMMENDED for overhead glazing and structural balustrades with no hand rails above ground floor; plastic wrap on toughened glass should be REMOVED no later than one month after exposure to sunlight.

Please state on your requirement order. Stamps available include GLAZING, AUTOMOTIVE and special sized stamps for louvres. Stamps can be custom made to customers name and specification. Please refer to National Glass for more details. Where no stamp is requested, the customer may be required to provide a compliance letter or certificate if so requested by relevant authorities. It is always advisable to identify toughened glass by stamping.

W H AT I S T E M P E R E D GLASS? Tempered glass is a generic term for glass that is either toughened or heat strengthened. Clarification should be sought as to which type of tempering is required and whether either one meets relevant code requirements. H E AT SOA K I N G Heat soaking involves heating toughened glass in an oven for a period of time at high temperatures to induce breakages that may be caused by inclusions or contaminants in the glass. However heat soaking does not guarantee detection of all inclusions or contaminants that may lead to spontaneous breakages. TO U G H E N E D SA F E T Y G L A S S R E ST R I CT I O N S Obvious restrictions such as furnace size (maximum size) and distance between rollers (minimum size) exist, although larger, smaller and thicker sizes are available on longer leadtimes. However, hole and cut-out positioning and their size are critical to the successful toughening of a panel. Incorrect hole and cut-out design creates excessive stresses and weaknesses that may result in breakage during the toughening process. A more dangerous scenario is that the panel fails on or after installation. The following guidelines are designed to prevent breakage during or after toughening. Refer to these guidelines or ask our staff to assist you in your design to ensure success. SIZE GUIDELINES
