CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

A. INTRODUCTION

“The internet is just a world passing notes around a classroom” (Jon Stewart ,

2005 )

Over a past few years, the internet has continuously grown and evolved across the

globe as one of the most iconic technological achievements. As we know internet is the

basic need of today’s technological world, Internet is defined as the global system of

computer network and information superhighway which have become a very necessary tool

and required by the knowledge-based on society present the contemporary for information

management, information search, communication, research, and learning, the internet can be

conceived as a rich, multi-layered complex ever-changing text for information dissemination

and a medium for collaborative interaction between individuals and computers without

regards for geographical limitation of space , (Jagboro, K, O,. 2003)

Internet is known as the world of knowledge, everything or any kind of information

related to your studies is available on the internet. “The internet is becoming a town square

for a global village of tomorrow” (Bill Gates, 2013), the number of children under the age of

thirteen who use the internet has surged in recent years. More than thirty million youngsters

visit online sites each year, and the internet is used by the majority of them. The Internet

changes people’s lives in terms of reaching, disseminating, creating, and evaluating a huge

amount of information easily and quickly, communicating with many different kinds of

people separated by space and time, and reallocating time for their daily activities. Use of

internet has become a big part and an essential component of the people’s everyday life
throughout the world. It also makes our life easy, fast, and simple. , according to

(Ivwighreghweta & Igere, 2014), the majority of students utilize the internet for academic

purposes such as collecting reading materials, studying for exams, and stimulating research

work, internet is a new tool for learning that outperforms the power and information of a

physical library. Students confront certain challenges when accessing the internet.

Based on the Global survey on January 2021 there were 4.66 billion active users

worldwide. Of this total, 92.3% (4.32 billion) accessed. The internet via mobile devices, in

January 2021, the Philippines had 73.91 million internet users between 2020 and 2021, the

number of internet users in the Philippines increased by 4.2 million (+6.1%). Internet

penetration in the Philippines stood at 67.0 percent in January 2021. the Philippines is also

the country with the most internet usage, clocking in at 10 hours and 56 minutes a day,

(Kemp, S., 2021)

Through its ability to act as support medium in the different functions for which

people use it, the internet was introduced to academic institutions as a tool to enhance

students academic experience in the mid 1990s. Today, the internet plays a major role in the

classroom, from course material being available online to larger ranger or academic resource

being a few clicks away, the influence of the internet on campus is incontestably felt.

Students nowadays spend more time on the internet, and their reading and reference

habits have significantly changed from old techniques. Online editions of textbooks,

reference materials, and daily newspapers have been substituted by many students. The

impact of online behaviors such as data usage (upload, download), and the number of

websites visited on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Excess internet use is a

relatively new phenomena that is most likely the result of preexisting mechanisms. The hunt

for stimulation through interactive services could be addictive, or the Internet could be used

as a way to escape from real-life problems. Students are getting less and less motivated to
engage with their studies and more anxious about their upcoming test and exams. That

sometimes leads to their studies and effects their grades. It can also reduce the students

study skill that is crucial to their academic studies. There are also cases of students who are

getting addicted to the internet. Most of these cases are due to the long duration of time they

spend on the internet. Students are getting hooked on the internet due to various reasons.

The majority of the students are using different kinds of electronic devices that can access

the internet like mobile phone, Ipad, laptop, computers, and so on. Using this devices they

connect to the internet and look for some entertainment that they can enjoy, mostly are

online games and applications that are trending today. Example of these are Tiktok, You-

tube, Facebook, Mobile legend, and so on.

This concerned that inappropriate internet content may endanger children's health or

safety, this study aims to shed light on children's exposure to negative Internet content by

developing a hypothesized theoretical model that investigates the impact of family context

factors (family cohesion, shared Web activities, parents' Internet skill, and parents' perceived

control) on children's exposure to negative internet content. Using this for a long duration of

time or using this with no discipline can get the students addicted. Addiction to the internet

has been shown to have a harmful impact on the development of kids. They ignore not just

their studies, but also themselves. It can have a physical and psychological impact, which

can lead to more serious health issues like depression, eyestrain, and difficulty focusing on

important tasks, among others. It can also have an impact on their household's daily budget

due to the additional expenses incurred as a result of using the internet without limits.

ensuring that students have access to the most basic technologies that are crucial to their

academic success.

However, if the internet has negative effect it can also have a positive effect. The

internet can also help students with academic information purposes. “There are two
equalizer in life: the internet and education” (John T. Chambers., 2000). Appropriately use

of the internet resources and services have aided students in improving their learning and

search abilities and can help them advance on their learning, enhance skill, and so on. The

internet is a wealth of information for students to improve their academic performance by

utilizing the information provided by the internet and seeking assistance in any field. There

are some engines that can provide you with information and ideas for your studies, such as

google search engines, yahoo, and bing, among others. Information that are necessary for

your studies can be found on the internet. It can help not only with their studies but it can

also provide some entertaining and enjoyment but it must be used appropriately and with

discipline, “Internet is fascinating, wild and phenomenal creation and is undoubtedly the

most marvelous of modern marvels” (Bluespan 2016).

The internet importance in providing access to search, increase student academic

accomplishment by making material accessible and assisting students in completing tasks

(Ward, A., Stoker, H. W., & Murray-Ward, M., 1996).

Research efforts focused on determining the impact of the internet on the current

academic performance of the grade VI pupils studying at the Sta. Justina East Elementary

School. Educate students on the advantages, expectations, and benefits of utilizing the

internet. This study can assist every student understand the consequences of excessive

internet use, particularly on their academic performance. And assist students to avoid being

addicted to the internet, it is necessary to have a schedule or a limit on internet usage. Every

student must know their limit on using the internet and just use the right amount of time.

They must have a separate time for the internet and their studies, that is why scheduling their

time is important.
They can also learn how to use the internet to their advantage, which will allow them

to make rapid progress in their studies and improve their academic achievement. With

online learning, students were given the tools for both success and failure.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter contain a summary of similar studies that assisted the researcher in refining

his or her research. These studies and literature have an strong connection to the current

investigation.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to Johnny Ryan (2018) The internet is a center of change in the growth of

education, politics, and commerce, a technology so uncommon and deeply unlikely to have

been created that its existence would be a perpetual marvel if it were not a feature of

everyday life. From beginning to conclusion, it was not guided by any treaty or master plan.

Its success was also due to a unique ethic that arose among engineers and early computer

enthusiasts in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the initiative of empowered users and

networking communities, the internet is a loosely connected but autonomous network of

devices that uses a protocol to communicate with other devices on the network.

Wells (2018), defined that the internet is a computer-mediated communication tool that

gives users access to a wide range of communication technologies. The internet is a global

system of interconnected computer networks that serves billions of people across the world

using the standard internet protocol suite. It is a networks made up of millions of private,

public, academic, business, and government networks ranging in size from local to

worldwide and connected by a variety of electronic, wireless, and optical networking

technologies.

The internet, according by Onwuazo (2020) allow an arbitrary large number of networks

to be interconnected and operated independently. End switched circuits connect these

networks and remain in place until message switching is complete. The internet has
transformed access to knowledge for the business sector, libraries, education, and

individuals, according to Ogunsola (2020) . Email, the World Wide Web, FTP (File Transfer

Protocol), Usenet, and Telnet are just a few of the most popular.

Begum Canaslan Akyar, and Ozkan Sapsaglam ( 2021 ), identified when media tools are

utilized in a developmentally inappropriate way, they can be damaging to children, and

excessive media tool use has a negative influence on children.

According to Aviv Weinstein & Michel Lejoyeux ,( 2021) mentioned that excessive or

poorly regulated preoccupations, desires, or behaviors related to computer use and internet

access that cause impairment or suffering are defined by problematic internet addiction or

excessive Internet use.

Puspita R, H, and Rohedi, D ( 2021), defined that less or no desire to hang out with peers

is one of the most noticeable social behavior deviations at this time. Students are more likely

to be confined or cool to like interacting via social media rather than hanging out with

people near them, and they are more concentrated in the virtual world, and they find that

some students lied to get into internet cafes (cafe) opens an online gaming site. For hours he

take the time to play this game. In addition to the time that should be used to help parents for

students who need help parents even used ostensibly to the cafe to look for material

assignment. In terms of looking for material for the task just a little while, but the opening

hours of gaming sites, maybe parents do not know if their children skip school because of

farewell from home as usual wearing a school uniform and wearing school bag. But it was in

the bag already there is a change of clothes so as not to get caught out later if to cafe

Students of nowhere. Parents are only realized after a call from the school if their children

skipped school often and when questioned admitted, online games search.
RELATED STUDIES

Jagboro K.O, ( 2017) stated that the education community is still the largest user of the

internet, many academic institutions have made their impact felt through the internet.

Zhang ( 2017 ), asserted the more useful computer network is perceived by the students

and the higher the level of internet usage satisfaction they felt.

Ogunsola ( 2018), stated that the internet and its technology continues to have a profound

effect in promoting the sharing of information specially in academic world.

In quantitative investigations, Sampath Kumar and Manjunath (2013) discovered that

teachers and research scholars use the internet to help their research and teaching. The

internet has had a good impact on their academic achievement, particularly in terms of

writing research papers, which helps them do better research and provides a better learning

experience.

LOCAL STUDIES

The study conducted by Dharel A., Mark Joshua C., Joy M., ( 2018) on the Relationship

of Student’s Internet Usage and Academic Performance. This study was conducted to see if

students' Internet usage had an impact on their academic achievement. A total of 386

undergraduate students from Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology

participated in the study. The researchers devised a structured interview and a questionnaire

in order to collect all of the necessary data. According to the data gathered from the

respondents, there was no statistically significant link between academic achievement and

Internet usage. The survey also discovered that there was no link between the respondents'

academic achievement and the location from which they accessed the Internet. Another

conclusion revealed that there was no link between respondents' academic performance and

their reasons for accessing the Internet, which included gaming, social networking, news,
and entertainment. However, there was a substantial link between the respondents' academic

achievement and their Internet usage.

The study conducted by Socorro G., Elizabeth K., Aniceto O., Prudencio G., (2018) on

the Internet Use among Filipino Public High School Students, this study discussed and

explore on how the third-year public high school students in the Philippines utilize the

Internet. It also looks into the links between Internet use and major life events including

college graduation, job, and marriage. The analysis is based on qualitative and quantitative

data from a GILAS (Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students) Program

assessment study. FGDs reveal that Internet use is gendered, with males preferring online

gaming and females preferring social networking. Both, on the other hand, are aware of the

hazards of Internet addiction but are ignorant of ethical concerns such as plagiarism and

piracy. According to preliminary descriptives, around 80% of sample students have used a

computer, but barely two-thirds have utilized the Internet. The students make use of the

Internet for their studies, i.e., to help with their assignments and research. They also use it as

a major source of information. Students are positively connected with the desire to attend

college, deferred entry into the job field, and a preference for marriage after graduation.

Both male and female pupils are affected by this relationship. However, students report

addiction as the main disadvantage of Internet use. This then causes problems with their

studies and relationship with their parents. There are also those who report health problems

(eye strain) as a negative consequence of prolonged Internet use. Both male and female

pupils are affected by this relationship. Internet use has been proven to be positively

connected with risky behaviors such as smoking among girls (but not boys) and alcohol

intake among both boys and girls.

A study conducted by Renee O., and Gina H( 2019), entitled The Good, The Bad and The

Ugly: Internet use, Outcomes and the Role of Regulation in the Philippines, it expands the
Uses and Gratification Theory by examining Internet use and its outcomes among Filipino

Internet users. It also puts the Social Cognitive Theory to the test by looking at the impact of

both internal and external regulation on Internet usage. Interviews were done to learn more

about how people use the Internet and how they perceive healthy vs problematic Internet

use. Surveys were given to 387 people from all around the Philippines in the second phase.

Basic Internet usage, amusement, expression and engagement, e-commerce, school-related,

and technological deviance were discovered to be the seven factors that people use the

Internet for. Increased productivity and personal development are two positive results of

Internet use. The results reveal a seven-component taxonomy of Internet use in the

Philippines: expression and interaction, basic Internet use, recreation, news and information,

school-related activities, e-commerce, and technology deviance. In addition, whereas past

studies tended to focus on problematic outcomes of Internet, the study highlights both

positive and negative outcomes. Results show that Internet use has benefits including greater

productivity and personal enhancement. However, when carried to the extreme, Internet use

can also lead to social harm and addictive tendencies.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Wang H, (2020) study on problematic internet use in high school students in Guandong

province, China. These researches contain intrinsic flaws, while determining the prevalence

of disease challenging. The association between influential factors and PIU. Numerous

research have been carried out among college students because kids are thought to become

more prone to internet addiction is more prevalent in this group than in others. During this

time, though, high school students go through a lot of changes during youth. Changes in the

physiology and psychology as well as the possibility of developing greater if they participate

in risky behavior, they have more serious issues than peoples of other ages.
The study of Dr. More Manisha M. ( 2020 ) conducted a research about the study of

internet use and health related implication of internet users. The study found that people are

becoming increasingly engrossed in the virtual world, staying away from their friends and

family. Even children will rather play online games than go out and mingle with other

children. This could make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Children’s social

development carpal tunnel syndrome in one of the health consequences of excessive

internet use, dry eyes, backaches, and soreness, numbness, and burning in the hands that can

extend up the wrist, elbows, and shoulders , severe headaches, eating disorder such as

skipping meals and failing to maintain personal hygiene, and sleep difficulties and so on.

Internet addictions is a different types of diseases as the internet become more popular, more

people are becoming addicted to it.

Siraj Harlina Halizah ( 2021 ) study on internet usage and academic performance; a

study in a malaysian public universities. Discussed that the internet is helpful to the students

in broadening their academic knowlegde by providing simple access to the information

world as well as communication with their peers. Community of academics its a great way

to find out what you’re looking for. Their homework and research the internet also serves as

a source of information for social connection and enjoyment, media is used. One can engage

with people through using social networking sites, emails, chatroom, blogs, and other

similar.

Boss Gnanaraj S, et al. ( 2021) scrutinize the problems of internet addictions and effects

on the lifestyle of university students. The internet is beneficial, it benefits pupils in some

ways, but it also has the potential to harm them. If pupils abuse or overuse it, it can ruin a

student's life. The Internet addiction is a major study focus. In the direction of the issues

brought on by the Internet The good elements of Internet usage include assisting students in

improving their communication skills, enhancing their relationships with others, and
assisting them in increasing their CGPA, among other things. It can help students damage

their lives if they are unaware of the disadvantages of the internet, such as staying on it for

long periods of time, becoming stressed, feeling unhappy, moody, porn websites, gambling,

and academic dishonesty.

The study conducted by Ogundijo, O ( 2021 ), defined that use of social networking

among secondary school student, most of student used social networking than their

academic information , however some of student search for academic information to achieve

their academic success.

The study of Ugwulebo J, E, and Okoro S,N, ( 2021 ) ( Impact of Internet Usage on the

Academic Performance of Undergraduates Students: A case study of the University of

Abuja, Nigeria. They find that the internet is being used by respondents mainly to obtain

course related information and it is least being used by respondents for games and music. It

say accept that the internet has a major role in helping undergraduate researcher’s access

large number of materials from different parts of the world.

The study of Ahmed Rizwan, Raheem and Vveinhardt J., ( 2022 ) the empirical analysis

of internet of usage and academic performance of student they defined the importance of

the independent variable in the relationship between the Internet and student performance

The influence of taken predictors on the respondent is enormous. It also shows that there is a

link between Internet use and academic performance among students. One unit of Internet

usage expanded as a result of the Internet, they also say that use of the Internet primarily for

educational and research purposes and get benefited and also playing a positive role and

participation in society. Respondents also expressed great confidence and satisfaction in

using Internet for educational purposes.

The study of Armstrong L, and Philips J, et al (2022) conducted a research about the

potential determinants of heavier internet usage. This study attempt to investigate that
despite the numerous applications of computer technology, it is not without its flaws.

Because of the widespread adoption of the Internet, people will be spending more time

online. In the future, people will spend longer lengths of time interacting with menus using

gadgets like the mouse. Because cumulative trauma disorder (RSI) is linked to exposure and

isn't just restricted to military personnel, There is a clear need to identify the factors that

influence heavier keyboard use. Use of the internet. The Internet's high level of accessibility

and huge diversity of resources, in particular, overuse of services is a possibility, with some

people's use of the Internet becoming excessive. While this has been described as

compulsive" or even addictive, Despite the fact that the phenomenon is poorly characterized,

it has the potential to be a source of concern given the growing number of users of the

internet.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes information on population, instrument design, method of

data collection and statistical analysis.

A. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY AND RESEARCH DESIGN

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of internet usage on the

academic life of grade VI pupils in sta justina east elementary school. The present study

followed by the quantitative approach, descriptive study is to collect data for the purpose

of describing and evaluating present situations, established practices, and attitudes,

among other things. A survey kind of research was undertaken to ensure the planned aims

and objectives were met. (Martyn Shuttleworth 2008) explained that the “Descriptive

research design is a reliable strategy for exploring certain topics and as a prelude to more

quantitative research. While there are legitimate worries about statistical validity, this

form of study is an invaluable scientific tool as long as the researcher understands the

limitations.”

B. RESPONDENT OF THE STUDY

The subject of the study of Grade 6 students of the Sta. East Elementary School.

The researchers used simple random sampling method to gather the respondents. They

were picked due to their utilization of internet-based technology.

Table 1. shows the respondent on grade 6.

Life of Grade VI pupils in Sta. Justina East Elementary School”, A questionnaire

containing a lot of questions was the main tool in gathering the needed data. This

respondents utilizes on using the internet. This questionnaire was based on the Academic

Performance and their internet usage among the Grade 6 students of the Sta. Justina East

Elementary School.

E. VALIDATION OF RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

In this study we are asked by our instructor to make questionnaire to distribute,

and asked to answer the questionnaire and make comment, suggestion and those

comment, suggestion were used to finalized the questionnaire.

F. DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

The researcher made questionnaire was validated, the researcher multiplied it to

number of copies sufficient to accommodate to all respondent, that the questionnaire used

to gather information. The questionnaire distributed to 32 Grade 6 students and parent

that are submitting their module to the teacher. After the questionnaire was distributed to

the student and to parent, the researcher explain how to answer the question and the

parents, students answered all the questions after the explanation.

G. STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF THE STUDY

The facilitate the interpretation of data, the researcher will be using statistical

tools, weighted mean, percentage techniques and also the following scale were used in

interpret and calculate the data gathered..

This table shows that a lot of student finish there modules on time and they
submit it on early morning of the Monday and Tuesday they strongly agree of the
statement and the others is agree that tutor or the siblings is helping them to finish their
module on time and submit but sometime the parent is the one who answer the module of
the student based on the data gathered.

The pearson correlation coefficient ranges from negative -1 to positive 1. When

the coefficient is equal to zero ( 0 ), There is no correlation between the variable. When
the coefficient is equal to positive 1, there is a perfect correlation between the variables
but when the correlation coefficient is equal to negative -1 there is perfect negative
correlation between the two variable.
Table 11 displays the significance relationship between the two variable of

Duration, grades the interpretation of the two is very low positive correlation the r-value

is 0.255, it means there is no correlation between the two variables. The data and grades

is very low positive correlation it has an 0.294 r value it shows that there is no

correlations between. Application and grades shows that the r-value is 0.286, it has no

correlation between the two the interpretation is very low positive correlation. And the

expenses and grade is very low positive correlation it means that there is no correlation

between the two variable the r-value is 0.127. this table shows that the significance

relationship between the effects of internet usage to academic life is very low positive it

means there is no significance relationship between this two variables.

negative correlation the r-value is -0.042 it means it has no correlation between the

variable, the data and module is low positive correlation and the r-value is 0.467 it shows

that its closer to zero, it means there is no correlation between, and Relationship between

applications and modules present low positive correlation so, no correlation cause the r-

value is 0.494, and the last is the expenses and modules it has an r-value of 0.507, the

interpretation is moderate positive correlation, you can see that its closer to the positive 1

or more, it means there is related correlated or it has an significance relationship between

the two variable.

internet and academic life of the grade 6 students. The meaning of SA1 is the duration of
the internet, SB2 is data, application is SC1, expenses is SD1 and the other is SA2 ,
Grades, the last is the No. Of modules is SB2.
The closer the correlation coefficient to positive 1 or negative -1 and the more, it
means its related correlated but when its closer to zero ( 0 ), it means no correlation
between the variable. The top of the row is the variable listed from to SA1 to SB2 and its
the same in the first column then the number on the table is represent the pearson
correlation coefficient values .
You can see that the r-value of SA1 and SB1 is 0.118 it shows that the

interpretation is very low positive correlation, it means its closer to zero so the

significance relationship between the two variable is there’s no correlation. The r-value

of sb1 to itself is positive 1, because its shows that the variables is against each other

and that’s why its gets the perfectly positive correlation, when the variables is against

each other it get’s the perfectly positive 1. the significance relationship between SA1 or

duration to application is very low positive correlation, meaning there is no correlation

between the two variable. And the highest pearson correlation coefficient is between the

Data and Expenses, r-value is 0.532 its closer to positive 1 it means there is positive

correlation or there is significance relationship between the two variable.

Chapter V
Summary of findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations

SUMMARY

The overriding purpose of this study is to determine the effects of internet usage

on academic life of grade 6 pupils in Sta. Justina East Elementary School. The research

was conducted to answer the following questions: What is the level of their internet

usage?; What is the status of the academic lives of the respondents?; What is the effect of

the internet usage on academic life of the respondents?; and What solutions that can be

proposed to minimize the negative effects of internet usage on the academic lives of the

respondent?. By cross-referencing the study to its related studies and literature, we were

able to find strong foundation or support for each information present. The related

studies and literature that has been presented was not more than 5 years ago for it to still

be valid and up to date. As stated in chapter III, the method of determining or acquiring

the required information, a survey questionnaire is distributed to the randomly selected

respondents by using simple random sampling method which resulted to a total of 32

respondents, 17 of it being the girls and the remaining 15 are the sample for the

population of the boys. In this chapter reports the conclusions and recommendations that

resulted from this study.

51
CONCLUSION

The study concludes that there are ups and downs in the new normal learning

which is the online learning. One of the findings is that, it is advantageous and beneficial

because you can access wide array of information. Also it is easy to find supporting

details or articles for their e-modules. It is taxing for the students to study online because

it is found out that learning online is much more expensive rather than learning face to

face especially with the fare rate that is too high because of scarcity of fuel. Also it is

also determined that there are various variables that can hinder or may be an obstacle for

online learning such as the accessibility of internet to learners, the availability of medium

used in their online learning that is available in their homes like laptop, cellphone and

such.

RECOMMENDATION

After a thorough analysis of data, the following recommendations are hereby made:

1. This research study suggests that there should be alternative learning system that
requires lesser duration or exposure to the usage of internet as well as there should be
lesser expense in submitting modules personally.
2. The study also suggest that to ensure the safety of the respondents/students there
should be parental guidance when using the internet to avoid accessing inappropriate
materials.
3. Lastly the study suggest that to better your academic performance during the new
normal learning system, try to consult other hardbound references that are related or
that has similar content to the topic you are tackling about.
