THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Internet is very useful to all people over the world. It is a basic tool for
finding jobs, trading, entertainment, communication as well as education in
contemporary world. It can find some facts and educational purposes. Nowadays,
individual cutting across generations use the internet. However, it is teen who
used it more than other age groups. But sometimes it can be bad to all people,
because it can be addicted in using internet by gaming and social networking
sites including students. It can affect to the academic performance of the
students when it can addicted. Tendency of internet addiction, those who spend
more time on line have an increased risk for developing internet addiction, which
can derail the focus of the life of students. The internet affected students by
feeding them with mindless data that can suck them in, making them vulnerable
to getting addicted. Face to face social skills are not exercised. At this stage of
students’ life, they are learning about the world around them. While the Internet
is supposed to bring people together, the fact that people only talk online instead
of making an effort to meet each other is sending wrong messages to students
and children.

The internet affects students by depriving them of face-to-face, genuine

communications that can teach. Decreasing creativity because everything can be
found on the internet, students don’t have to make more efforts or look for more
ways to know the answer to homework, or even to their own questions. With the
internet, they don’t need to pay any more attention, or think, or make more
effort, because everything they need to know is just within a click of a button.
Staying up late some students stay up late at night just poring over random
things on the internet. This is very harmful to the growing minds of students.
Also, when they wake up the next day, they have low energy and tend to not pay
attention or even fall asleep in class. Students, especially young children, need to
be active. This is another way for them to develop their minds and bodies.

However, being on the internet most of the time keeps them inactive, just
seated on their chairs or even lying down when they should have been outdoors
playing with friends. Homework and other school projects can be copied right off
the internet, making cheating very easy to do with just a few clicks. Academic
fraud and plagiarism is common in school when students can look for ready-
made answers on the internet. This kind of behavior breeds a culture of cheating
and easy ways out of any problem. Everything can be found on the internet–and
this also is true for inappropriate things. Students who are always on the internet
are exposing themselves to material that can corrupt them. These things can
result to bad mental and behavioral development in these students. In this case,
the internet affects students by feeding them unfiltered information that is
harmful for them. All these said, it’s up to both parents and teachers to ensure
that students have limited access to internet and materials on the web. It is also
up to them to ensure that students are using their time on the web responsibly.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Internet has become a worldwide phenomenon used by the children

and adult for the variety of reasons. It is a convenient way of retrieving
information and connected to others. Unfortunately, some individuals like
students were develop an addiction to the internet, which can be difficult to
overcome. Addiction of the internet can be caused by depression, loneliness,
social disorder and compulsion. According to Sargin, Nurten 2012, each
innovation brings along many risks. One of the risks related with the Internet use
is Internet addiction. The aim of this study is to examine Internet addiction in
adolescence in terms of gender, Internet access at home and grades.
The study of internet addiction raises a very important issue within the
field of consumer studies in two ways. First, it can delve into the concept of
addictive consumption, which has been neither popularly nor easily studied in
consumer studies. We expect that this study may contribute to laying a
theoretical foundation for the modeling of addictive consumer behavior.
Secondly, in a practical context, it may contribute to suggesting more effective
consumer policies and consumer education programs to encourage proper and
responsible consumer behavior in the information society.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aimed to know the effects of internet addiction for their
academic performance to the students of ICT and CIT students of AITSA Cabuyao.

Specifically, this study sought answer to the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age
1.2 gender
1.3 educational status
1.4 length of time the respondents using internet (in terms of months)
1.5 length of time the respondents using internet in a week (in terms of
hours)

2. How internet addiction can affect in academic performance.

3. What can be proposed to improve student’s awareness in terms of internet

addiction and to improve the student’s academic performance?

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study used the systems approach and the presentation of the concept
of this study which contains three variables namely, Input, Process and Output.

INPUT: The input of this study consist of the profile of the ICT and CIT students
of AITSA Cabuyao in terms of age, gender, educational status, and length of time
of using internet, and how internet addiction can affect in academic performance

PROCESS: The process is the analysis and interpretation of data gathered, survey,
system approach and observation for the students.

OUTPUT: The output is to propose a recommendation to improve handling in

internet and improve academic performance of the students for future success.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A study of Internet addiction through the lens of the interpersonal theory.

Previous studies have presented conflicting claims regarding reasons that people
become addicted to the Internet. (CY Liu, 2007). Parents and peer influence
playing role in different areas in the lives of youth (Bowerman & Kinch, 1959; J.W.
Young & Ferguson, 1979), and peer are more influential in decisions on social
issues such as choice of friends and group membership (J.W. Young & Ferguous,
1979) (as cited in Patrick, 2010). According to Aseltine (1995), the peer group
has traditionally been the center of attention in the sociological literature on
adolescent deviance, there is research clearly documented the links between
peer influence and substance use, as well as delinquent behavior and antisocial
values (Thomas, 2011). There are some empirical support about the notion that
males are more subject to internet addiction, example like, according to
Morahan-Martin and Schumacker (2000), males were more likely than females to
be pathological users (which is 12% vs. 3%), whereas females were more likely
than males to have no symptoms (28% vs. 26%) or have limited symptoms (69%
vs. 61%) of behavioral pathology (as cited in Chou, Condron, & Belland, 2005).

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

This research study hypothesized that the Internet Addiction doesn’t

affect Academic Performance of the students.

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY

This study was premised on the following assumptions. The respondents

themselves are the source of their personal information. The student’s academic
performance and having an internet addiction and its effects are tested.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

To students – This study is primarily important to all students, for it will

give them information about the effects of internet addiction.

To parents – This study will help the parents to have enough knowledge
about the effects of internet addiction.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the studies relevant to presentation investigation.

In the study according to Wood, Gupta, Devevensky & Griffiths (2004) that
Internet can be addictive. The research has tended to concentrate on negative
aspects such as excessive play and addiction. Instead of spending hours on
studying and doing their homework. They will spend their time on playing
games.

According to USA Today (2016) , 71% of those with internet addiction are
between the ages of 18 to 24. The study also found that 39% of Americans spend
more time socializing online than they do in-person. Internet, social media and
gaming addictions have become increasingly more popular among college
students and their academics are suffering.

According to the source, Net Addiction (2016), No single behavior pattern

defines internet addiction. These behaviors, when they have taken control of
addicts’ lives and become unmanageable, include: compulsive use of the internet,
a preoccupation with being online, lying or hiding the extent or nature of online
behavior and an inability to control online behavior. Individuals whose internet
use pattern interferes with their life in any way shape or form (e.g. does it impact
work, family life, relationships, school, etc.) may have a problem. In addition,
individuals who find that they are using the internet as a means to regularly alter
their mood may be developing a problem. It is important to note that it is not the
actual time spent online that determines if someone has a problem, but rather if
it impacts his or her life.

The use of the internet has increased considerably over the last few years.
The growth of internet users has been exponential. With this growth have come a
number of questions about the impact of internet use. Kandell (1998) defined
internet addiction as a psychological dependence on the internet, regardless of
the activity once logged on. Among these is whether some individuals develop
disturbed patterns of online behavior including internet addiction (Griffiths,
2000). People who lose control over their actions in life, and in general, spend
more than 38 hours a week online, are considered to have an internet addiction
(Greenfield, 1999). Excessive internet use may create a heightened level of
psychological arousal, resulting in little sleep, failure to eat for long periods, and
limited physical activity, possibly leading to the user experiencing physical and
mental health problems such as depression, OCD, low family relationships and
anxiety. Problematic internet use may be associated with subjective distress,
functional impairment and Axis I psychiatric disorders (Shapira et al., 2000).
Self-reported internet dependency and impaired academic performance were
both associated with greater use of all internet applications such as email and
use net newsgroups (Kubey et al., 2001).
