1 Scope

1.1 JDM H4 specifies property requirements for O-rings and for the elastomeric materials used to
manufacture O-rings. JDM H4 does not cover dimensional or other quality requirements of finished O-rings;
refer to part drawings and O-ring product standards for requirements of finished O-rings.

1.2 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should” or
“recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be
appropriate for all machines or all applications.

2 Designations
Designations and descriptions for O-ring materials are shown in Table 1.

D
• ASTM/SAE type and class indicate a test temperature and maximum volume increase in IRM 903
oil.
• ISO 1629 material references are standard nomenclature, based on chemical composition, for

R
rubber compounds that meet the general material description of the corresponding JDM H4
designation.
• H4C, H4D, H4F and H4G materials are usually peroxide cured, although other curing methods may

A
be used if the O-rings meet all specification requirements.
• H4P and H4R can be copolymers. Rest of the FKM numbers should not be copolymers. Copolymers
should not be used for fuel application.

F
• O-ring material substitutions:
• H4F may be substituted for H4C. H4G may be substituted for H4D.

T
• H4A and H4B no longer should be specified for any new design. Existing prints specifying JDM H4A
and H4B can be substituted with H4C and H4D respectively.
• H4C shall not be substituted for H4F. H4D shall not be substituted for H4G.
• Any other O-ring material substitutions shall be pre-approved by the appropriate John Deere
materials engineer for elastomers.
• H4Q, H4S, H4T and H4U should be metal oxide free.

6 Materials Identified as Not For New Design

6.1 Designations
Designations and descriptions for O-ring materials not to be used for new designs are shown in Table 9.

Table 9 Designations and Descriptions for O-Ring Materials

ASTM D2000 /
SAE J200 Shore A ISO 1629
JDM H4 Type and Durometer Material
Number Class Material Description Hardness Reference
JDM H4A BG Nitrile elastomer 70 NBR
JDM H4B BG Nitrile elastomer 90 NBR
• ASTM/SAE type and class indicate a test temperature and maximum volume increase in IRM 903
oil.
• ISO 1629 material references are standard nomenclature, based on chemical composition, for
rubber compounds that meet the general material description of the corresponding JDM H4
designation.
• H4A and H4B materials are usually sulfur cured, although other curing methods may be used if the
O-rings meet all specification requirements. H4A and H4B designations should not be specified for
new designs.
• H4A shall not be substituted for H4C. H4B shall not be substituted for H4D.
• Any other O-ring material substitutions shall be pre-approved by the appropriate John Deere
materials engineer for elastomers.

7 Quality Assurance

7.1 Inspection and Rejection

7.1.1 While samples may be taken from incoming shipments and checked for conformance to the
requirements of this standard, the supplier shall accept the responsibility of making shipments which meet
the appropriate specification requirements without dependence upon inspection by John Deere. Shipments
will be rejected if they do not meet specification requirements.

7.1.2 Unless otherwise specified on the part drawing, O-rings shall meet or exceed the quality
acceptance criteria for Grade N according to ISO 3601-3.

7.2 Supplier Inspection Limits

Inspection limits that fall within the general specification limits for JDM H4 O-rings may be established for
individual compounds approved under this standard. Shipments may be rejected if they do not meet these
supplier inspection limits. D
R
7.3 Certification of Quality
7.3.1 Materials and O-rings shall be in accordance with JDS-G223. Data such as visual, dimensional,
and physical properties shall be available to quality engineers of individual John Deere unit on a per lot
basis.

7.3.2 The supplier shall submit any change to an approved material compound 6 months prior to
A
F
implementation. The supplier shall follow the SCR process of JDS-G223.

7.3.3 The supplier shall provide the full material compound certification from their internal lab and a

T
nationally accredited third-party lab as defined by PPAP requirements in JDS-G223 at the time of approval.

7.3.4 The full material compound certification shall include:

• the corresponding information from Table 2 through Table 7 and Table 10 through Table 11
• ‘ash content’ value of the compound
• ‘Specific gravity’ or ‘density’

7.3.5 Partial material compound certification records shall be retained for a minimum of one year from
the date of shipment of the parts. Upon request, the supplier shall provide all applicable inspection records
for a given lot of parts to the purchaser within a reasonable time not to exceed 24 hours as defined in
JDS-G223.

The partial material compound certification shall include:

• compression set and heat aging, as per Table 2, Table 3, Table 4 and Table 10
• ‘ash content’ value of the compound
• ‘Specific gravity’ or ‘density’

7.3.6 Material compound certifications shall be submitted to the following email address:
[email protected].

7.4 Test Methods

Chemical and physical properties shall be determined according to the test methods listed in Table 2
through Table 7, or in conformance to another technical equivalent test method.

7.5 New Suppliers

No shipments shall be made from a new source until samples of the proposed material and O-rings
manufactured from the proposed material have been approved by John Deere. Suppliers should contact
individual John Deere units for details of supplier approval and certification procedures which apply at those
units. The request to add, delete, or revise a supplier O-ring material shall be submitted to the appropriate
Materials Engineering personnel as determined by John Deere.

8 Restricted Use of Materials

8.1 JDM H4 material shall be in accordance with JDM H31.

8.2 JDM H4 material shall not contain hexavalent chromium.

8.3 Regardless of coating, a statement identifying that part is free of hexavalent chromium shall be
provided during PPAP.
