Mainstream rock in the '80s consisted of very dressed-up guys singing about drugs, getting

women, loving rock'n'roll. All with a very careful and prolific sound with those guitar solos in
abundance, always with virtuosity. However, the underground scene became more noticeable
every day. Metal was experimenting with darker sounds with genres like Trash Metal, there
was also the punk circuit that appealed to a more visceral sound, avoiding all kinds of musical
virtuosity. There was also the New Wave or Noise, a movement that gave rise to bands like
Sonic Youth.

The sum of all these styles gave way to a new musical genre, which was called Grunge. A style
that knew how to take something from all these movements that were going around, doing
something quite dark but at the same time quite pop.

The important thing about this whole cultural movement is that it inspired a young American
to form his band, and that's how Nirvana released their first album: Bleach.

In short, it is a very important album to understand the sound of Nirvana. It's a mix of 60s rock
with all those underground sounds that were going around. Although this album was not a
great commercial success but it gave way to record a new album. The band hangs out with
producer Butch Vig. Cobain wasnt very happy with this recording in a professional studio,
because Bleach sounded like it was recorded in a garage, but in the end, the pressure made
him accept. And so the : Nevermind was born. The album that changed the 90s. This album has
a song that we have all heard before: Smell Like Teen Spirit.

One of the most iconic and most listened songs of humanity. A song that knew how to cut
through all that mass-produced rock and at the time invaded all of Mtv, newspapers, and
unseating Michael Jackson to number 5 on the charts. One of the key moments in the history
of rock, where the most underground sounds dethroned the almighty King of Pop and his disco
Dangerous.

In September 1993, Nirvana released their latest album ¨In Utero¨ my favorite album in the
world. Finding their own sound, separating themselves from all other bands.

Kurt Cobain dies on April 5, 1994, and so does grunge.

For a whole generation, Cobain was an icon of not submitting to what others want from you.
Until the end of his days, Cobain remained loyal to his ideals, and the only thing that matters is
that his message keeps getting through and will continue to get through, in the end isn't that
what rock is all about?
