Question 1
(a) A parallel plate capacitor, filled with air, is charged to a voltage of 20 V, after which the
voltage source is disconnected from the capacitor. The capacitor is then filled with a
dielectric material and the voltage across the capacitor is now measured as 5 V. Further,
it is observed that the relative permittivity of the material is independent of the
temperature. If the electronic polarizability αe, of the material is 1.475 × 10-40 cm2V-1 and
the dipole density N, is 12×1027 per m3
i. Calculate the shares of electronic, ionic and orientational polarization to the total
susceptibility. [5 marks]
ii. Explain why the voltage across the capacitor gets dropped once the dielectric material
is inserted into it. [3 marks]
(b) Both HO and C=O bonds are polar bonds. Explain why the H2O molecule has a nonzero
dipole moment, while the CO2 molecule has zero dipole moment. [3 marks]
(c) Classify the different types of insulating materials with reference to their limiting safe
temperatures for use, giving examples of materials. [4 marks]

Question 2

(a) Obtain an expression for the critical corona inception voltage in a 2 conductor line with
spacing 2m and conductor radius 15mm at an ambient temperature of 30oC. Derive any
equations used. [5 marks]
(b) Describe very briefly with the aid of suitable diagrams the mechanism of the lightning
stroke generation. [4 marks]
Describe briefly with the aid of suitable diagrams, equations and/or examples, where
appropriate, the following:
(c) The avalanche process in the breakdown of gaseous dielectrics. [2 marks]
(d) The breakdown of liquids below intrinsic strength due to 3 types of impurities. [3 marks]
(e) The breakdown of solids below intrinsic strength due to thermal causes in the presence of
the applied voltage. [3 marks]
(f) The time lag characteristic of spark breakdown for an impulse waveform. [2 marks]

Question 3

(a) Derive an expression for the insulation resistance of a single core cable. [2 marks]
Determine the insulation resistance of 2 km length of cable, if the resistivity of the cable
insulation is 41012 m, the core diameter is 15 mm and the sheath inner diameter is
50 mm. [2 marks]
(b) Derive an expression for the capacitance of a single core cable per unit length. [2 marks]
(c) Explain with the aid of suitable diagram cross-bonding of cables. [2 marks]
(d) Determine the capacitance to the neutral of a three-core belted type cable, if the
capacitance is measured (i) as 10 F between the 3 cores bunched together and earth and
(ii) as 6 F between conductor and the other two connected to earth. . [2 marks]
(e) Derive an expression for the thermal resistance of the ground when a cable of sheath
radius R is buried at a depth of h below the ground and the ground has a thermal
conductivity k. [3 marks]
A single phase cable buried in the ground at a depth of 1.5 m below the surface. If the
diameter over insulation is 90 mm and the thermal resistivity of ground is 0.55oC-m/W
determine the thermal resistance of the ground. [2 marks]
(f) A single phase cable for a 3-phase, 132 kV system, is to be designed using 2 insulating
materials A and B with peak critical breakdown stresses of 150 kV/cm and 120 kV/cm
and corresponding relative permittivities of 4.4 and 2.8 respectively. If the conductor
radius is 15 mm, determine the order and thickness of the insulation for optimum
dimensions of the cable. Take a safety factor as 2 in the design. [6 marks]

Question 4

(a) By deriving from first principles show that surges on lines can be represented by forward
and reverse travelling waves. [4 marks]
(b) Derive an expression for the reflection coefficient in terms of the surge impedance of the
incident line Z1 and the transmitted line Z2. [2 marks]
(c) A 300 km transmission line AB has a series inductance of 405 mH and a shunt
capacitance of 2.49 μF. Determine the energy stored in the line due to a surge of
magnitude 100 kV, the surge impedance Z1 and the travel time 1 of the line. Derive any
equations used. [5 marks]
(d) The line AB above (attenuation factor = 0.85) is connected through an overhead line BC
(Z0 = 300 , length = 150 km, attenuation factor = 0.9) to feed a load of surge impedance
1700  at C. A rectangular wave of peak height 100 kV originates in the overhead line
AB at A and travels towards B. Sketch the Bewley Lattice Diagram, with values for the
first 1.8 ms. [6 marks]
