INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES The numbers in the right hand margin represent an approximate guide to the marks available for that question (or part of a question). Total marks available are 100. Answer FOUR questions, at least ONE from each section
Useful constants and formula Speed of light in air / vacuum: c = 3 x 108 m / s 1 / 4o= 9 x 109 m / F Permittivity of free space: 0 = 8.85 x 10-12 F / m (approx (10-9 / 36) F / m Permeability of free space: 0 = 4 x 10-7 H / m Acceleration due to gravity: g = 9.8 m / s2 Speed of light in vacuum:

Q1. a) Write the expression for the electric field (E) of a sinusoidal electromagnetic wave travelling in the positive direction along the x-axis, given that for t = 0 and x = 0, E = E0. Explain the meaning of each term in your expression. b) The wavelength (in air) of the electromagnetic wave in part a) is 150 nm. Find its period and frequency. c) Find the value of E in part b) at a distance x = 1 nm from the start and after time t = 4 x 10

Q2.
a)
Derive the relationship between the wavelength of an electromagnetic wave in air/vacuum and in a medium with index of refraction n.
b)
Find the wavelength of green light (air = 503 nm) in oil (noil = 1.48). Does the colour of light change inside the oil?
c)
Two light pulses start at the same time and cover the same distance D but follow different paths: the first pulse travels exclusively in air while the second one travels in air except for a 8 m part of its path that is in oil (ignore the effect of the oil container). Find the difference in arrival time between the two pulses (Obviously D > 8 m, see Figure 1 below)

Q3. a) A current carrying wire is situated in a magnetic field. Calculate the current through the wire if the force on it is 1.5 N, the magnetic field is 2 Tesla, the length of the wire is 0.5 m and the angle between the field and current is 30o. b) What is the force on the wire of part a) if the magnetic field is parallel to the current? c) Figure 2 below shows a vertical frame which is inside a uniform magnetic field. The frame rests on the plane of the page and the field is perpendicular to it as shown in Figure 2. Wire AB has zero electrical resistance, is in good electrical contact with the frame and can move without friction on the side rails. Assume that the side rails are appropriately long for the needs of the problem. The distance between the two rails is 0.35 m, the magnetic field is B = 2 Tesla and the mass of the wire is 0.1 kg. Wire AB is at rest before the voltage source is connected. i) ii) iii) Find the force on wire AB due to the magnetic field. Find the total force on the wire. Find the speed of the wire 10 s after the current starts flowing. 5 3 6 5 6
