Introduction: Tribhuvan University Central Library was established in 1959, which is
the best and largest modern library in Nepal. In 1969, the British Book
Department Council rated it as one of the best libraries in Asia. The library is also
regarded as the largest one in the entire Asia pacific region.

a) Brief history of central library: The Nepal National Education Commission,

appointed by the Nepal Govt. in 1954, recommended in its report as saying “A
strong central library should be established as a center for study and
research”. As a result, an agreement between the Government of Nepal and
the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was signed on April
30, 1957 to establish a Central Library in Kathmandu. In the same year a
month later in July 1959. Tribhuvan University Act was passed and the
University itself came into existence. This same year, the T.U. Library was
established After three years, in 1962, the Central Library at Lal Durbar was
handed over to Tribhuvan University Library in accordance with a decision of
the Govt. of Nepal, and thus, after the merger of the 3 years old Central library
at Lall Durbar (having a collection of 15,000 volumes of books) with the
Tribhuvan University Library (having a collection of 7813 volumes) it came to
be known as Tribhuvan University Library (TUCL) and the collection reached
24,813 volumes of books. Now talking about present it has more than 5 lakhs
books.

b) Section and departments: there are 18 sections in total. They all are very
unique from each other. Some of them are: Nepal collection, UN depository
section, Chinese book section and Audio book sections etc. some of the
explanations are:
i) Nepal Collection: In this collection only Nepal books are found.
whoever writer writes about Nepal something knowledgeable is
kept in library. Anyone around the country writes about Nepal they
are kept or stored in it.
ii) UN depository section: In this section all the un organizations and
books are kept there. T.U. Central Library has been designated as
the only UN depository library in Nepal for the publicati ons of
United Nati ons and its agencies. Ever since then T.U. Central
library has been regularly receiving UN publicati ons. The
publicati ons include books, journals, reports etc. Besides this,
other Internati onal organizati ons too have been sending their
publicati ons to this library free of cost. This collecti on secti on
is on the fi rst fl oor.

c) Book borrowing system: It is also known as lending system, this is the main service of any
academic library. T.U Central Library off ers membership and lends books to
all the university campus students, teachers and research scholars as well as
to private members including foreigners except children. Rules and
regulati ons regarding membership, lending items, numbers, validity, fee, fi nes,
clearance certi fi cate etc. are indicated in our library brochure. Page 1
Page no 2

d) Security System fi nes and penalti es: As we enter there are 3 cc

cameras. In the entrance there were 3 to 4 security guards which
they took our personal belongings like bags and we cannot take
inside mobile, foods or any stupid materials except book copies pen
and pencils. If we have taken membership in the T.U library we can
lend books for 1 week. If we don’t return them they will charge some
certain amount and some warnings is given if this repeated many
ti mes.

2)Research method:
a) Meaning of data: The main moto of visiti ng library was knowing about
the culture inside the library and how the process of books goes on there.
There was many secti ons in which more than 5 lakhs books were found, if
we want to study it will take our whole life. We are account students and
there was a topic of fi ling system so, our subject teach took us to increase
our knowledge which will help in our SEE.

b)Types of data: The way of keeping their books were traditi onal method
by using guide cards. It was a catalogue cabinet in which they give number
from 0 to 900 to books to locate them easily. If we go in other library their
way of storing is modern but only in T.U library we can see Traditi onal way
of locati ng books.

c)Method of collecti on of data: Their method of collecti ng their data were

old ways .But their way of preserving the books was very good. There was
a binding secti on in which they give long term to old books in order to
prevent for future generati on. They used alphabeti c order.

d)Method used in this report: This method is now very popular these days.
Many higher organizati on write it and present them. The method I’m using
is word pad method in which I write informati on in keyboard and print out
them.

Data analysis:
a) Department wise book: There were altogether 18 departments
of books. In which I personally wanted to read was Chinese and
Singha books. They divided department of books by seeing
their importance and information gained by reading them. The
department of books are kept by seeing their value and
demands in the market.
b) Department wise users: The demand of books was mainly their
subject. Because the students were of college, bachelor and
masters level. They just come and read the subject books which
they need. The demand of books was mainly depending upon
their course. Many department was empty, I found full
department was their course study sub jects only.
c) Book borrowing time: They can borrow book any time of
opening to closing if they have membership. But I found people
taking book from library and studying their in group or
individually.
d) Fine record: As I have listened the records of fines to anyone is
not good. their management is not active and good. Our
principal sir Raj Kumar Pandey also studied their and his
experience told us that the management is poor ,corruption is
high when he studied their he used to give books after many
months later. but they don’t used to fine or penalty him.
e) Table for records: The records were very bad because. many
book are not returned after borrowing them. The management
need to be more strict.

Findings, recommendations and conclusion: The library tour was very

informational and good. I want to thank our subject teacher and of
course the transportation team to take their. But there are some
complain about the library staff and their students. When we reach
their we wanted a guide to give tour of library but no one was ready
to give us tour they all were irresponsible, The responsibility of
taking carte should be there. There are all together 32 staffs They
were all very busy. But one lady I forgot her name but thanks to her
for giving the tour. The roof top was also not repaired they need to
work on it. The corruption people is very harmful for any
organization so, corrupted people in the library should be punished
because of them, the management is not good .But I liked one thing
was their security they were all very strict and following rules. I love
their devotion, responsibility and sincerity towards their job. The
maintaining of silence in the library was good because discipline
comes first and they were showcasing that. The will of studying new
book and gaining extra knowledge was their destination. I love the
tour Thank You.
