Vegetarians or meat eaters?

Vegetarians or meat eaters? This is one of the most controversial and intense
debates in relation to food. One reason is the wide range of issues it covers:
health, nutrition, environmental concerns, animal welfare and ethics.
People have different points of view: some represent one side and others take
another position, in the middle, some people think that human beings are
omnivores and it is in our nature to eat both meat and vegetables.

From the point of view of those who do not eat animal meat, the human
anatomy had an evolution to follow a vegetarian diet. Human beings lack some
essential characteristics that carnivores have. The mouth and teeth are flat and
short, which is more appropriate for fibrous food. The intestines are long and
this facilitates the digestion of vegetables. The liver can’t easily process vitamin
A that humans get from eating meat.
But, for carnivores, eating meat has been an essential part of human evolution
for more than 2 million years. Meat was one of the reasons why human beings
were able to develop their brains and intelligence.

On one hand, vegetarians say it is unethical to eat meat when other options are
available, as there are several scientific studies that show that animals can
experience emotions, have feelings and can develop social relationships.
On the other hand, for carnivores, eating meat is a natural part of the life cycle.
Human beings were created by evolution to eat meat and other foods derived
from animals. Furthermore, plants also have emotions as they communicate,
respond and create communities.

For veggies, their election is a health issue due to a vegetarian diet provides
complete nutrition and health benefits. It gives protein needs, provides all
essential amino acids, and improves health. Studies have shown that a
vegetarian diet reduces the risk of various diseases and can also provide all the
necessary vitamins, nutrients and minerals.
Meat eaters find meat to be incredibly nutritious: it contains proteins and
provides us with creatine, which forms an energy store in our muscles and
brain. Vitamins A, B and D are good for vision and for the muscles and bones of
the teeth, and also help maintain central nervous system and skin health.

According to the first group, the election of a vegetarian diet can have a huge
positive impact on the planet: it protects the soil, preserves water, saves energy
and purifies the air. Also, we can reduce the amount of land and oil resources
we consume, and lower our carbon footprint on the environment.
But, for those who do consume meat, the integrity of the environment requires
animals and meat consumption. There is no vegetable that does not depend on
the manure of animals or fish for its fertility. Proper animal management is the
best way to stop climate change and desertification.

Vegetarians say that “we are what we eat”. For them, being a vegetarian is not
just about a diet choice but about a vision of life.
For meat eaters, vegetarianism is a marketing strategy. Labels like "farm-
raised" or "natural" are more about a trend than about improving our food in any
way. In many parts of the world, vegetarianism is not a viable option since in
some cases it can be very expensive to eat without eating animal meat.
