A. Answer the following question to verbalize your understanding of teaching mathematics in the
intermediate grades.
Why is it important to learn mathematics in the intermediate grades? Cites some experiences to
support your answer.
Perhaps the most important reason to study math is because the study of mathematics builds problem-
solving skills. Every citizen needs to be able to reason and solve problems analytically. For instance,
your mother asked you to buy some foods in the supermarket, she gave you Php 300.00 and she told
you that you need to budget it so that it'll be sufficient to all the foods you need to buy. Unfortunately,
you don't know the four mathematical operation which is apparently the addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division. How will you able to fulfill the task if you don't know anything? That's
why mathematics is an important part of learning for children in the early years because it provides
vital life skills. They will help children problem solve, measure and develop their own spatial
awareness, and teach them how to use and understand.
B. The following questions will practice your reflective-thinking skills. As you will learn later, it is important
for teachers to develop these skills as they evaluate their lessons.
Have you ever experienced mathematics anxiety? If not, do you know someone who did? Describe
your experience below. Focus on how you viewed math, math class, and your math teacher during the
times when you had mathematics anxiety.
Yes, I have experienced mathematics anxiety in my intermediate years. It was a very unpleasant experience.
When I was in intermediate years, my former Mathematics teacher was really terror. One time, my math
teacher scolded me, because I didn't go to the front to answer the questions. Then, every time it's time for our
math class I get scared. I was afraid that my teacher would call me again in the middle of the class and ask me
questions about numbers and so on and I wouldn't be able to answer them. I get bumps when I hear math. I
conclude, many people feel extremely nervous when faced with a situation that requires them to do basic
mathematics.
B. The following activity will require you to interact with students in the intermediate levels. This
experience will give you a broader understanding of the learners in this level and will also enhance
your communication skills with them. This activity will be part of the learning portfolio that you will
compile at the end of this module.
1. Survey at least five students in Grades4, 5, or 6. Ask them the following questions: Are you afraid
of math? Why or why not? Record their responses in the table below.
Yes No
Amsor A. Sumael / Because my sister teaches me math that is why I’m not scared.
Jamaica A. Sumael / Because I’m not good in solving especially word problem.
The Philippine Mathematics curriculum under the K-12 program promotes critical thinking and creativity.
Moreover, content standards, performance standards, and learning competencies are explicitly stated to guide
teachers in developing their lessons.
A. Many teachers in the field are confused about the difference between content standards, performance
standards, and learning competencies. It is important that you understand them and their importance
because they serve as the skeleton of the mathematics curriculum. Research about it and answer the
question below.
In your own understanding, explain the difference among content standards, performance standards,
and learning competencies. What is the importance of each?
In my own understanding of content standard is all about the knowledge and skill of the students that
should attain and often called “what” and “why” that every student should be able to know and what
they wanted to know about something. However, the performance standard is something that the
learner is expected to do and be able to do. These demonstrate the achievement, acquisition and
application of the knowledge or skill required by the content standard. And learning competency is, it
is the use of the desired knowledge, skills, behavior, and abilities of the student or the learner on how
they use their behavior and knowledge in learning.
The importance of each standards are; in order for the teacher to know what the learners should want
to know and to assess the performance of the student and their knowledge about something. That is the
importance of those standard that mentioned above and above all, those three standard in learning are
essential because for the students’ knowledge acquisition and for the learner to be able to understand
why is it important to learn and for them to discover their different intelligence.
B. The following question will challenge your research and reasoning skills.
It was discussed that the Philippine math curriculum is primarily concerned with critical thinking and
problem-solving skills. Why do you think this is so?
In the Philippine Mathematics Curriculum is conceived with the twin goals of developing students’
critical thinking and problem solving. I think that this is because teachers are really much into
something that could lift up their students from something else. In the Philippines, students are not
likely much have the ability to solve problem and think critically this is because the students before
doesn’t have enough knowledge about technology. However, the Philippines propose this subject for
the students’ welfare and for them to really develop their abilities to think and solve problem using
their knowledge.
C. In every math lesson, the teacher must keep three things in mind: (1) What is to be learned, (2) Where
the students are coming from, and (3) Where the students are going with what they will learn. The
following activity will help you develop the skill of mapping every competency you teach. This will
be part of the learning portfolio that you will compile at the end of this module.
Choose one learning competencies in Grade 5. In each competency, find the prerequisite competencies
in Grade 4 and the competencies in Grade 6 wherein your chosen Grade 5 competency is a
prerequisite of.
