Compaction of Soil
❖ Compaction increases the strength characteristics of soils, which increase the bearing
capacity of foundations constructed over them.
❖ Compaction also decreases the amount of undesirable settlement of structures and
increases the stability of slopes of embankments.
❖ Compaction, in general, is the densification of soil by removal of air, which requires
mechanical energy. Simplistically, compaction may be defined as the process in which
soil particles are forced closer together with the resultant reduction in air voids

Moisture Density Relation / Compaction
Test
❖The purpose of the laboratory compaction test is to determine the right
amount of mixing water in compacting a soil fill, in order to obtain the
maximum density under the applied energy.
❖The highest point on the curve indicates the Maximum Dry Density ( MDD )
and the corresponding moisture content is called Optimum Moisture Content (
OMC ).
Moisture Density Relation / Compaction
Test
❖ Four Distinct Stages in Compaction:
1. Wetting
2. Lubrication Stage
3. Swelling
4. Saturation
Moisture Density Relation / Compaction
Test
❖AASHTO T99 - Moisture – Density Relation of Soils
Using 2.5-kg (5.5-lb) Rammer and a 305-mm (12in.)

❖AASHTO T180 - Moisture – Density Relation of Soils
Using 4.5-kg (10-lb) Rammer and a 457-mm (18in.)
Drop

❖Method A - 101.6 mm (4-in.) mold (0.000943 m3); soil passing

No. 4 sieve; 3kg sample; 5 layers; 25 blows
❖Method B – 152.4 mm (6-in.) mold (0.002125 m3); soil passing
No. 4 sieve; 7kg sample; 5 layers; 56 blows
❖Method C - 101.6 mm (4-in.) mold (0.000943 m3); soil passing
0.75-in sieve; 5kg sample; 5 layers; 25 blows
❖Method D - 152.4 mm (6-in.) mold (0.002125 m3); soil passing
0.75-in sieve; 11kg sample; 5 layers; 56 blows
DPWH BLUEBOOK SPECIFICATIONS
❖ Item 104 – Embankment
❖ 104.3.3 – “The Contractor shall compact the material placed in all embankment
layers and the material scarified to the designated depth below subgrade in cut
sections, until a uniform density of not less than 95 mass percent of the maximum
dry density determined by AASHTO T99 Method C, is attained, …”
❖ Item 200 – Aggregate Subbase Course
❖200.3.3 – “Compaction of each layer shall continue until a field density of atleast 100
percent of the maximum dry density determines in accordance with AASHTO T180
Method D has been achieved…”
